What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

I inherited some money and wanted financial advice on how best to manage it and also wanted pension advice.

How has Ian Shipway helped you?

After the initial assessment of my finances, risk level and life style, a package of investments was clearly explained to me. Also the transparency of the charges gave me confidence. Subsequently, over many years, Ian has carried out 6 monthly reviews, advising me of changes required in order to keep my portfolio balanced, despite unnerving fluctuations in the stock market at times. He has quickly and personally responded to any queries I have had. I continue to have confidence that my investments are being monitored on my behalf, to ensure a regular income, and financial security for my old age.

What could they have done better?

Ian gives me the service I want, so I have no complaints at all.

On all the criteria noted above as constituting an 'excellent' rating, we have found the service to be everything we hoped for. We very much appreciate his manifest integrity - and also his willingness to re-explain even the most basic principles if we forget them!

What could they have done better?

Although we appreciate why this is so difficult to do, it would be helpful for us to know of some simple bottom line measure of whether our investments are doing well or badly in comparison with comparable market alternatives.

How has Ian Shipway helped you?

Ian takes the time to completely undestand what I need from a financial advisor. He is calm and I trust him absolutely. I have known him as an FA for 20 years and he has only ever had mine and my family's changing best interests at heart. Ian is the only person in the world my wife trusts!

What could they have done better?

It is very difficult to answer this. I have tried to think of something. But from an FD perspective there is genuinely nothing I would want Ian to change. He has even taken up golf latterly! If he could just take up a slight interest in football then he'd be perfect.

Ian Shipway spent time to fully appreciate our family circumstances, our attitude to risk and our ambitions and concerns for the future. At each review he reconfirms his understanding of our position and discusses whether there have been any material changes in our circumstances and objectives .Our investments are configured to meet these agreed objectives with a risk/reward profile that we have agreed. Operating as we are in an uncertain world it is a great comfort to have his experienced involvement in managing our portfolio. In summary I know that I am treated as an individual by an advisor who understands my position and ambitions.

What could they have done better?

We all like to be able to benchmark performance in terms of returns over time. This is notoriously difficult in an investment scenario when no two clients are likely to have the same risk, investment criteria etc. Benchmarks have long been used in the world of pensions providers etc - never very reliable or helpful in the medium term -but performance comparisons would be of interest if they could be made accurate and relevant.

Dealing with any advisor in any field demands the building of trust. Without trust there is no value in accepting any guidance or advise. Ian has consistently earned that position whether it be through deep knowledge and understanding or the ability to simplify the complexities of financial products and services. He is very easy to communicate with and one feels confidence in decisions jointly made.

What could they have done better?

If there was an improvement to be made I would probably find another advisor. As it is there is none that spring to mind but having the "trust" relationship means that if there were it could be discussed and I believe very quickly resolved.

i have been a client of Ian for over 10 years. He has always taken time to understand my changing requirements and tailored his advice most appropriately. Ian is always available if i telephone with a query, reports on time and makes me feel that he takes the time to make recommendations that are right for me, not just to be part of a production line. He seems to be completely up to date with the changing legislation and markets and is aware of potential changes - and planning accordingly. His letters and reports are well written and informative. He went to considerable trouble to investigate and research a new product i wanted and although complex, carried it through painlessly for me. i have no hesitation in recommending him to others.

What could they have done better?

i would like it to be easier in the annual report to compare movements with the previous year (allowing for withdrawals and new receipts), not just with the year of purchase.

I have known Ian Shipway for many years.He took over my financial affairs after my previous adviser had given me very bad advice which meant I was paying far too tax and not taking advantage of the various options open to me.Ian completely reorganized my affairs and put everything on a much sounder footing.He also steered me through a difficult divorce advising me how far I could go in agreeing a financial settlement.I am completely confident in Ian as my financial adviser,as I am with his well trained staff,he is always been available when I have needed him and has responded very promptly to any query of mine,even when he has been out of the country.I would have no hesitation in recommending him to any prospective client,he has looked after me extremely well

I really can't think of anything. My nature is to take a little more risk and to follow up new ideas but my age must dictate that I don't. I am carefully guided away from these ventures!
