When moving back from Dubai after 10 years as an expat I was looking for a trustworthy advisor to help me manage the wealth I had accumulated.

How has Tom Buss helped you?

Tom helped me navigate my reintroduction into the world of personal finance in the UK. He patientily guided me through how to optimally use the allowances available to me and ensured my investments matched my life plans. As a returning expat in a relatively well paid job, my income tax bill stung into the first year. But through working with Tom and managing my affairs effectively I managed to get a rebate of £50,000 in year one. Money which would otherwise have gone to HMRC. Since then I have started my own business and Tom works with my accountant to make sure I get rounded, holistic advice that fits with what I want to achieve in life.

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

Yes. Obviously the investment market had had its ups and downs over the past few years but my investments have performed well relative to the market. In fact I set up a small self-managed portfolio to compete against the portfolio I have with Tom and his has consistently outperformed mine.

What could they have done better?

I'm not sure. One of the benefits of having Tom as an advisor is he acts as a calming voice when markets are down. He helps me to remember my goals, avoid making rash decisions and stick to the plan of long term growth.

we were not happy with our previous company's performance. No information from them. No callbacks both after we had phoned and e-mailed them. No visits or discussion.

I can't exactly remember but I think it was a combination of needing help with investments on behalf of my late mother and consolidating some small pension pots of my own. Since then he has assisted with the investment of my late mother's estate, amongst other things.

We were at a change in our life, mortgage was finished and we wanted to plan for the future and had a sum of money to invest.

Tom gathered all our assets and pension plans, he forecast our future income needs and pension income at different times in the future. Based on this and our investment risk profile and requirements he proposed an investment strategy and platform to invest in.

Prior to COVID-19 we were happy with the platforms performances, even during the pandemic the platforms out performed the FTSE. Given a normal year we would have more than achieved our targets.

What could they have done better?

To improve Tom could have provided more options to consider. We needed the advice and would have been confused with too many options, however we didn’t look at many options, Tom provided a strategy and we agreed, it has performed to our targets, we could have maybe discussed more platforms. We did not discuss the environmental perspective in our investments, is our portfolio focussing on companies with solid environmental foundations.

Tom undertook a very thorough assessment of my financial situation and carefully analysed each of the pension schemes to propose consolidation options for me. We rolled this in to financial planning and constructed a strategy that outlines investment options, tax advice and planning for a set retirement income on my preferred retirement date.

Tom maintains regular contact with me to keep my investments in order and maximise my returns.

What could they have done better?

There is a certain amount of smoke and mirrors with investment advice, so it would be useful to have the thought process of managing your investment clearly demonstrated: ie "I did this for you and here's why..." I do not doubt it but this would help me understand why Tom is so much better at managing my money than other advisors.

Its early days in our relationship together but I can already use words such as friendly, approachable, helpful, responsive as words to describe Tom and the service he provides. I felt he understood my position clearly and offered good solutions, he also offered a choice of solutions and explanations of each which gave me the confidence that his advice was truly independent.

What could they have done better?

To date I have no suggestions on how to improve there have been no reasons to disagree or situations that didn't meet my expectations.

I had Tom's name on recommendation, and I have been delighted with the help and advice he has given me. He was very thorough in presenting clearly all the various options open to me, and very patient in explaining the implications of all the different savings options I was interested in. I feel that, thanks to Tom, I have made the right choice to suit my needs. I would recommend Tom without hesitation.

Tom's ability to evaluate my particular circumstances quickly proved that he was focused on listening rather than simply assuming that my situation was like any other. He certainly gives a great deal of thought to providing the appropriate advice and is quick to admit that he doesn't know all the answers immediately. That doesn't prevent him from researching in detail the subject and giving his considered opinion as soon as he can. My financial affairs are now in much better shape and it's reassuring to know that I can contact Tom at any time should circumstances change.
