In 2010 I accepted a redundancy package and therefore needed an advisor to sort out my pension pots , one of which was with the Equitable so particularly complicated.

How has Ketan Shah helped you?

Ketan was very hands on - moving funds whenever necessary to generate the best income to suit my needs. He also advised recently that now would be a good time to transfer from drawdown to an annuity and handled this very professionally. I am very happy that this was the right time for me to take that decision.

Absolutely. I have been taking a drawdown for the past 13 years and have been very happy with how well the fund maintained it's value whilst supplying me with a monthly income.

The main area that I was looking for advice, Ketan was not able to grant because he specialises in a slightly different area, but he was able to refer me to someone who I have since taken on board as my accountant and she is truly excellent!! Having reached the age of 55 and not having made much provision for retirement I knew I needed to do something.

he listened and asked a lot of questions which for me was very good because it showed he wanted to fully understand my wishes before giving any advice. Everything was communicated to me very well and I was also given a lot of information that I was able to digest at my leisure. When advice was given Ket went to some length to explain the reasons why, from this I was fully able to understand everything.

It is true, we do come out expensive on certain pieces of work. We don't charge a flat percentage but look at 'time' cost and 'risk premium'. The business uses a 'fee planner' to determine the cost of the work required and as we are a multi-adviser firm we actively use this in front of clients to illustrate how we arrive at the fees proposed and evidence that we aim to provide consistent charges across the business.

This was a very professional and focused meeting that enabled me to clarify some of the crucial detail of my intended withdrawal from academia. Ketan used appropriate Q/As to enable both of us to come to a shared understanding of the pros and cons of investing/ providing regular income from my Teachers' Pension via his company Argentis. Ketan understood that this is a pivotal moment for me and that I now need time to digest the facts and consider my options. If I should decide not to proceed with this firm it would only be on the basis that their fees were unaffordable, given the size of my pension pot.

Many thanks for the review. It is true that due to the way we time cost any work, in some cases the piece of work involved and the sum of money involved, the fee can be relatively high. We follow a very tight process for Final Salary transfers irrespective of fund size and unfortunately this creates a high fee where the transfer value is small. Conversely it is common for high fund values to yield a fee less than 1%. We also use an external specialist company for part of the work due to the very nature and sensitivity of such advice which adds to the cost. Ultimately the objective is to ensure any lifetime decisions are in the clients best interest as such work is irreversible once transacted. It is a little embarrassing to say to clients that the fee would be (in this case) circa 8% of the cash sum involved. Really sorry I couldn't accommodate any more. Kind regards. Ket

Changes to one of my pension funds caused me to review all of them.

Ketan was excellent in corralling all the information from the different schemes I had and helping get them into some semblance of order. He then helped me to understand the options available to me based on what I wanted to happen with my funds (and in particular how I required better overall protection for my family and estate).

as a consequence of Ketan's advice I have now consolidated a number of previous pension schemes into one fund which resulted in understanding various limits being reached and the need fro a change in approach going forwards which I would not have been aware of had I not contacted Ketan.

There were some time delays in resolving some of these issues which to be fair to Ket he did advise me of and apologise in advance - he seems rather in demand for his services!

During a brief phone call to him I stated that I stated that I had savings which I wished to invest, butt which I wanted access to, as I anticipated incurring considerable expenses over the next six and a half years. He said he was unable to give me any concrete advise at the time and recommended that I consult my bank. No meeting for further discussion with him was arranged and no charges were mentioned.

The issue was the timeframe for the investment. The need for access didn't warrant an investment related product as access was required over a relatively short period. We consider a timeframe of approximately 5 years plus as worth discussing investments. In this case there was strong reason suggest funds would be required over a short period in which case I consider it unethical to invest the funds and charge a fee. Even low risk investments need time to aid growth and if there was a sudden market downturn, the loss in value could have severely hampered the clients resources.

Obviously IFA's can only advise to a point. They are rightly not able to tell you what the best decision is even if an option is affordable. Just because something is affordable does not mean that it is the correct decision to make. Ketan was very clear in that his role is to provide information and support and not to make decisions. This was a refreshing experience from other IFAs who seem to be informally pushing you to make certain decisions.
