Retirement is an exciting time, but it’s also quite scary too, with some big changes looming and a lot of questions spinning around in your head. At the start of our retirement journey, our biggest worry by far was having enough income to live the kind of life we’d been working and saving for all those years. We’re not among the few to have a final salary pension, which means it’s down to us - and that’s really scary. I knew a little about investment and the stock market and even did some pre-retirement studying on the subject, but quickly realised that I was well out of my depth and that we needed someone to help us through the maze. We’d had mixed experiences with financial advisors in the past, so finding someone we could trust was a real concern. We reached Paul after some online research and, after an initial phone call, decided to pay him a visit at Mackenzie Financial Planning’s office in Bury. We felt at ease from the start, and not just because Paul and his staff were friendly and welcoming - aren’t all finance people? It was because he identified with our situation from the start. We had shared our financial profile and the details of our pension pots beforehand, together with an overview of our goals and expectations for retirement. Our main brief, though, was that we wanted to sleep at night, with the feeling that we had taken all reasonable steps to make our money work as well for us as we could. From the outset, Paul showed us projections of our potential income based on our pension savings and anticipated spending patterns and retirement plans, which include holidays and home improvements. That felt very real and personal to us and it gave us the orientation we needed to make some big decisions. The first one was could we afford to retire? After that, it was what kind of income could we reasonably expect in our later years? Getting a feel for that gave us the confidence to explore further and go to the next stage. Our approach to choosing a retirement planner was to take it one step at a time to allow us to get to know our advisor better before committing. That’s why it was essential for us to find someone who offered a fee-based service for a retirement plan, which we could pause and reflect on before going any further. Too many require an up-front, fingers-crossed commitment, which we weren’t comfortable with. Paul’s detailed retirement plan made it very real for us and enabled us to confidently make the decision to retire. It also gave us a good idea of the kind of lifestyle we could look forward to. That gave us a solid foundation to work on and to take the next step, knowing that here was someone who was tuned in to our individual needs and could tailor our investments accordingly. Several discussions followed to allow us to ask lots of questions, especially about how post-retirement investments work and how tax-free cash is used to best advantage. That resulted in us appointing Paul and his expert staff as our retirement planners. Mackenzie handled our transfers and after a settling in period and some further fine-tuning, we are now on our way. We are thoroughly enjoying our retirement and can plan for what comes next knowing that Paul and Anthony are there to keep us on track year on year, and are there if we need them. At the beginning of the journey, it seemed like a mountain to climb to find someone we could trust to put our retirement savings to best use. It’s a relief to have found that relationship, but a pleasant surprise to have found much more. The financial knowledge and modern planning tools used at Mackenzie really instill confidence and a feeling of security. That helps us to sleep very well at night.

I had the great pleasure to meet Paul Jones at a networking event back in 2019. He did a presentation around pensions and something really clicked with me and he presented it in such a simple and understanding way. From this point forward I realised the help Paul and the team at Mackenzie could help me with was going to be very important as I work towards my retirement. The thing that really struck me was the way they took time to gather all the information and not rushing me into any decision. This has been our first involvement in independent financial management and we have been delighted bu the support and guidance provided by Mackenzie Financial Planning. I was approaching retirement and was looking to secure my exiting investments immediately before retirement and then invest in low to medium risk funds following retirement to provide a regular sustained income.

How has Paul Jones helped you?

Paul performed a financial analysis of income vs expenditure through retirement. Paul then advised on zero-to low-risk funds for investment before retirement, and then advised on a mix of annuity an low-to-medium risk draw-down funds to provide a mix of guaranteed income and variable draw-down income through retirement. Paul also advised on the suitable investment funds for tax free portion of my existing investment funds. All the advice given was tailored to meet the risk profiles of myself and my wife - previously ascertained by Paul though the completion of a Risk profile Questionnaire. Also, talking things through with Paul enabled us to develop a balanced portfolio of investments.

Paul sorted out my pensions.savings & annuity in a clear and professional manner. He listens carefully to my financial plans and makes relevant suggestions culminating in sound advise. Although I have not needed to speak to Paul outside our annual meeting,I feel sure that he would respond promptly should my circumstances change. His offices are comfortable and private. I have recommended his services to my children & friends

How has Paul Jones helped you?

I first met Paul and appointed him as my financial adviser in 2005. Paul rearranged my pensions into an orderly, easy to understand pension plan. Prior to meeting Paul I had a whole array of pensions that I did not understand with no idea what they would provide for me. He explained everything very clearly, the benefits/ drawbacks of each option and advised me on the appropriate solution that suited my position; recommending a far less risky strategy for my pensions and portfolios than I had been following previously few years. - A strategy that has performed admirably. He as kept me on track with his proactive service. I can heartily recommend Paul and the team at Mackenzie Financial Planning. Well worth the fee.
