Thought long and hard about a financial advisor as it was a bit of money. But put into context i am going to retire once. Mark has done this probably thousands of times with other people so it was a no brainer.

I contacted True Bearing in Autumn 2020 to obtain financial advice in preparation for mine & my husbands’ retirement the following summer

Following our initial meeting Mark prepared a cashflow report which demonstrated our various options, clearly illustrating the impacted of inflation on our savings and the importance of investing appropriately. Once we had agreed the need to invest Mark provided questionnaires to access our attitudes to risk and loss which informed the products that he recommended. Throughout he was keen to ensure that we were comfortable with the funds he recommended and that we were clear on all charges, etc.

What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

My wife and I wanted a financial advisor to review our pension and other savings in order to get a view on whether we were on track to retire early and to be able to afford the lifestyle which we want in retirement. We also wanted advice on whether our current spread of investments were appropriate in relation to our attitude to risk.

How has Mark Russel helped you?

Mark spent time during the initial 1 hour consultation asking a wide range of questions and gathering data about my wife's and my current financial situation in order to ensure that he had a good understanding of this, and also of our goals and aspirations. He had a professional, yet relaxed approach and covered a lot of financial areas, including life/critical illness insurance, and outstanding debts, savings which we had put aside for our children's university education, and our attitude to risk. He was able to answer all questions which we had in detail and at an appropriate and understandable level. Following the initial consultation (which was free) we then engaged with Mark to generate a retirement forecast for us. This involved a further face-to-face data gathering meeting, plus a number of emails to clarify facts and also to clarify our expectations in relation to the output. The output was then presented to us in a further meeting approximately 1 month later. The costs for this work were clear and were discussed up-front and we felt engaged and informed at all times during the process.

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

Yes. Mark had a clear understanding of our requirements and expectations and his final retirement income report, which is very professional and detailed, met all of these. The assumptions used in the report are clear throughout and, if anything, the output was actually slightly better than we had hoped in that it demonstrated that we may actually require a slightly smaller pension pot than we had originally anticipated in order to live comfortably in retirement.

What could they have done better?

Nothing. I have previously met with other advisors who either haven't been able to answer certain questions or who have made certain assumptions about our situation without checking the facts first. Mark took the time to answer questions which we had at an appropriate, understandable level, and also to ensure that he had all the facts and information which he needed before starting his assessment. He also probed our understanding of investments, pensions rules and regulations in order to ensure that he was conversing with us at an appropriate level.

We are approaching retirement age and wanted to have a full review of our existing pension provisions and savings to provide a plan for funding living expenses and adventures once retired.

How has Mark Russel helped you?

Mark has done an amazing job in reviewing our financial resources and producing a plan to maximise the returns on those resources whilst having acceptable levels of access. We have had regular face to face reviews to ensure that this plan is still the most effective for us. Alternatives and proposals were fully explained and agreed before any actions were taken.

Yes - we now have the cash funds invested and new private pension policies which should give a better return than the previous policies. A life insurance policy has been switched to a cheaper policy which also gives a higher level of cover as part of the plan.

What could they have done better?

We are completely satisfied with Mark's advice, actions and professionalism. He has been very patient in explaining matters which have, at times, been a little difficult for us to understand. In conclusion we are not sure what he could done better!

He did not put me under any pressure - In fact as my finances were in order and further options limited, he left without me needing to incur a fee or have a further in depth appointment. Mark advised me to request a 5% income to be paid monthly, from my main investment - This will help to increase my monthly income.

Mark's advice was clear and to the point. I am happy that I will now receive an income from my savings. Mark also agreed with my decision, to claim a small deferred pension, that I hold, before my retirement date as the reduction incurred will be quite small (For that pension only).

Maybe gone into more detail, regarding my Stakeholder Pension options however, I understand that we were only at the initial 'Free Appointment' stage.

Mark is very personable with an in-depth knowledge of the subject matter. On our initial meeting he listened intently to my requirements only interjecting where necessary. I came away from the meeting confident that I would be receiving a first class service. On our follow up meetings Mark thoroughly explained his recommendations to me answering any queries that I had in terms that I could relate to.

What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

Following the sale of farm land for housing development I inevitably came into considerable sums of money and needed professional advise on how best to invest a percentage of the money raised. Mark Russel was recommended to me by our accountant David Kirkhope.

Following a detailed discussion on forward planning towards a comfortable retirement in five, six or seven years time ( health depending ) we looked initially at my current pension arrangements. These figures project a figure of between £22- £24k. By putting monies into 5 year + investment "vehicles" through maximising ISA contributions, Investment Portfolio's in Bonds - it is envisaged that the above pension should attain a figure of around £30k / annum.

Monies invested with Mark Russel had risen 11.2 % from 24/02/16 - 18/08/16 which was very pleasing in a very short 6 month period of time and in very difficult trading times. In the past few weeks I have added further monies into my ISA Account to maximise the tax benefits of this investment vehicle.

Mark has a deep knowledge and understanding of his subject together with a energetic passion for what he does. With a view to retiring within the next 5-10 years, we felt that we would like some good, professional independent financial advice. The company advisers we had did not carry out instrucians. One adviser was struk off as a resut. I had removed my own money by then. The company agreed to change our pensions to private pensions to safeguard our invstments.
