We took control of one old defined benefit pension and transferred it to a SIIP, and on retirement we also moved my additional voluntary contributions to the same fund. Gordon also advised on the impact of the life time allowances and the tax free allowance.

After many successful years, my long-term pensions advisor retired and sold his business. The aquirer let me down badly by effectively leaving my fund in neglect during 2020-2021 using the pandemic as an excuse. Naturally, I had to change advisors and Gordon was recommended to me by my former long-term advisor. I was concerned that my fund was not being optimized and communications and advice, which had been a natural part of my former relationship, were non-existent and had to be re-established. My aim was to revert to the kind of professional relationship I had enjoyed for many years - and see my fund grow once more (markets permitting).

From the outset I gave Gordon a task to find out what I actually had in the way of savings re-Pension pots. I had all sorts of statements from various investments that I had made during my employment of 44 years. To further add to my little knowledge I was under threat of being made redundant but not knowing when. After collating all the info, he presented me with a break down of what I actually had. Within a week I had to telephone him to tell him that I would be out of work by Christmas 2014. This gave Gordon little time to come up with a course of action. Gordon presented me with a complete forecast of what I could cash in and when, in the event of being unable to find employment. The presentation was a full breakdown of what the Strategy was going to be from when I received my last pay cheque. I have never had any faith in financial planners in the past, they only ever seemed to want to recommend schemes that would pay them the most commission. Maybe their advice was unbiased but I was always sceptical that the advice they gave me was in my best interests not their own. Gordon acted in a very friendly but professional manner, he made me realise that my previous attitude to my pension fund (which was basically ignoring it and assuming that there would be enough in the pot to retire on) was never going to work and that time and effort was needed to turn things around. We looked at my attitudes to risk, when i would like to retire and ideally what i would need in my retirement and once he understood all of these issues he acted accordingly. The transfer of funds from my previous pension provider went very smoothly and I can now say that I understand more about how my money is being invested.
