The outcome we have experienced over the past twelve years or so that we have been clients of Paul Lothian have exceeded our expectations. We have both been able to retire earlier than we had originally planned and are substantially better off than we could have imagined.

Nothing could have been done better. Paul offers a first class service with excellent support from his team, all at a very competitive cost which is more than offset by the performance of our portfolios.

What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

Having recently returned to Dundee and taken a new job I felt now (late 30's) was a good time to take more control over my young family’s future and secure our financial position with selective pensions and investments. I also wanted to clearly define a path towards retirement to give us the opportunity to make lifestyle choices on the way and fully understand the impact of them.

How has Paul Lothian helped you?

Paul helped us carry out a lot of fact finding upon our current financial position, including income and expenditure gathering, and used this data to complete cash flow models of various future scenarios, which was extremely enlightening. He also briefed us upon passive investment and using diversified index funds with low management charges to minimise costs and reduce risk, this really struck a chord with us.

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

The immediate benefits are that we feel much more knowledgeable and confident about investments and savings which will help us take more control of our finances. We've also moved our Stocks & Shares ISA from an active to passive fund and made some adjustment to a couple of pensions. It's early days to determine the results of these changes however we are much clearer on what our future may look like and would recommend others do similar.

What could they have done better?

I couldn't have asked for any more assistance than was given, professional, friendly, knowledgeable and reasonably priced, recommended highly!

We were and still are a long way off retirement age and wanted to put steps in place in order to be able to do so at an age of our choosing. Having that expertise has been especially important in recent years as we have our own business.

How has Paul Lothian helped you?

Paul gathered a lot of information from us which in itself was a useful exercise. He then helped us work out what we needed to build as a pension pot and looked at ways to achieve that. He has also helped us with important significant tasks like a pension transfer.

We are still getting there as we are still way off retirement age! We feel so much more in control and when we talk to our peers we realise that most people don’t have this kind of guidance, but should.

Paul is fantastic. A lovely, easy to talk to man, extremely knowledgeable and with the highest qualifications in his field. Sometimes he maybe thinks I know more than I do (probably should) so always important to ask if you are getting lost!

Paul is a very intelligent, knowledgeable guy who is very easy to speak to. I wanted to roll 3 pensions into 1 SIPP. Paul advised me because if the curcumstances with extraordinary payments due I had to wait 3 years. He managed the whole process, discovering I was being overcharged on one fund ( the rebate covered Paul’s fee alone). 10 years on I am in a much better place.

I was made redundant a number of years ago & required advice on what to do with the money. More recently I had some insurance policies that matured & I needed advice on the best thing to do with it.

With the redundancy lump sum Paul advised me to pay off my mortgage, which I did do & very happy to have done so. With my insurance policies a Paul invested the money for me in a way he knew it would meet my needs.

I have my own business and was looking for advice regarding protection. This has turned out and proved to be valuable advice. I also looked for advice regarding pensions and this has also been extremely helpful.

He advised me to take key man insurance out for the business. He also advised to put as much as I could afford through way of a wage sacrifice. Paul’s manner and explanation of how these measures work makes it easy to understand the process which is a great asset to have!.

Unfortunately yes in the fact that my business partner died and we would had a difficult period if this keymsn policy was not in place. The pension fund is going to be more in line with what I will require given the advice.

I have been with the Lothian,s from 1977 . There was know need to change , I have been happy with the advice from them . My first encounter was with Andy when he set up a mortgage for me. For the past number of years Paul has been advising me on my Pension .

Yes. The investments made have yielded excellent growth without exposing me to too much risk. In addition, some adjustments were made at a recent meeting to maximise growth/returns transferring a proportion of funds to better performing investment areas.

I think Paul would agree that he cannot 'spread himself out' too thinly now that he has a second office in Aberdeen. Perhaps its time to consider how best to delegate specific tasks and roles in his structure without distancing himself too far from the 'coalface'.
