I was keen to plan ahead for retirement in the next ten and have been in a few pension schemes. I want to be clear of my mortgage by then but currently have a longer term remaining. I also wanted to top up mortgage critical illness protection.

I have worked with a financial adviser for several years but following my move to a different part of Scotland I wanted an adviser who was nearer to where I now live.

I was badly let down by my current mortgage lender (Platform Mortgages) at the 11th hour when trying to purchase a new property so I got in contact with Jean and she was incredibly helpful from the word go.

Jean was an absolute life saver to me and my wife! After I explained my situation To Jean that platform had put us in, she managed to secure a mortgage for me from start to offer letter within 2 weeks. I knew it would be a hard task with the tight timescale I had and I was in real danger of losing the property we were buying and also was very close to losing the sale of my property which would’ve been awful. Thanks to Jean and her team, it has now all worked out which is a big relief

What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

Approaching retirement I took the first steps to look at my options with Jean. Later ,after a forced redundancy we took further advice regarding pension and mortgage .

How has Jean Dawson helped you?

After she studied my portfolio she made a call to our mortgage holder and negotiated a two year ,fixed rate mortgage giving us some stability at a reduced premium. Jean introduced us to the possibility of transferring our pension and this has opened up a whole range of options and we thing will transform our retirement for the better.

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

Yes regarding the mortgage,the pension is still work in progress .

What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

We had been forced to take early retirement due to ill health and were living on our savings as we are not yet able to collect our state pensions. We both had multiple small pension pots, savings and some occupational pensions, so needed to speak to someone who could advise us on how to pull all of this together. While I had worked out we could afford to retire early by selling our house and downsizing to a smaller property, I knew I needed proper advice regarding our pensions.

How has Jean Dawson helped you?

Jean helped by explaining the options available to us regarding our pension pots and occupational pensions. We are still in the process of sorting this out, but have made significant progress so far. I have a single pension pot, which Jean has moved to another scheme that should work better for me. I also have two occupational schemes that I am considering transferring, and I have been discussing this with Jean and plan to look into this further in 2019. My husband has several pension pots, which Jean has pulled together into a single scheme. I think one of the main areas that Jean has helped with is understanding how we can best invest our money so that neither of us is left in a difficult position when one of us dies.

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

This is still a work in progress, but we have made significant progress so far and we are both very happy with the advice we have received. Most of my husband's finances have now been sorted out, so the next step is to investigate how I deal with my occupational pensions.

Jean reviewed my various funds and, following review of my attitude to risk, she advised on appropriate funds to provide security in retirement. Jean has also advised on drawdown from the funds.

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

Yes, the returns were as expected for year one, taking into account that setup fees were to be paid in the first year. Jean has also recommended switching some funds based on her review of fund performance over the year to maximise returns.

What could they have done better?

Nothing really. Jean uses a finance portal for clients to see the status of funds. My only minor recommendation is for the portal to be updated in real time so that it can be used to it’s full potential.

First of all Jean looked at Mortgages and it was found that we were outside the scope of renewing a "normal" type mortgage because of our age, etc. Jean then looked at Equity release for us in a very comprehensive and extensive way and found us one which exactly fitted our circumstances. Jean also went through Inheritance Planning with us, to make sure we understood exactly how it would affect us.

My mother needed help with her savings and investments and, as power of attorney, and because my mother is no longer able to understand finances I needed help.
