I had 5 separate pension 'pots', and needed advice upon retiring. John was an adviser on the Pension Wise listing, and was local, and had good reviews. Once I and my wife met him we knew he was someone we could relate to and work with.
How has John Markham helped you?
John has been very diligent and professional in pursuing my interests, thwarted by no end of issues with some of the financial institutions involved. He has certainly earned his fee, and he has assisted me through a minefield I could not have dealt with unaided. Always kept me informed and up to speed when appropriate.
Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?
I am more than happy with the outcome, the result is better than I ever envisaged, more lucrative than John's earliest forecast, and what explorations I had done on line.
What could they have done better?
Nothing. The issues were all with the providers involved, some of whom need seriously taken to task by their governing body. The delays in transferring some funds, and processing was woeful. I feel sorry for the advisers who have to put up with this labour cost, and that it may lead to some of them having to increase their charges, which then becomes an additional cost to the customer/consumer.

From the first phone call made by myself to John Markham's office. I have found John & his staff to be polite, helpful and very knowledgeable In the first and subsequent meets with John I found that he patiently listen to my ideas on investments explaining some were good and some not so. He being an independent adviser seems not to push any product, explaining each on risk and merit. Having assessed my pensions, and the best way to use them John very honestly explained one of my pensions such be used as annuity it being an older type with a guaranteed 9.75% return hard to beat in today draw down market. Now after some time of managing my pensions, share Isa's and gia’s well, he still answers the phone quickly, and sorts problems in the same way

I decided to release some equity from my pension to repair & improve our house. I did a local search & John’s name came up. I then did an fsa search & everything seemed acceptable so I contacted John & we arranged a meeting.

John helped put any fears at bay, made me realise that it’s always best to look at the long game, especially when it’s something like a pension.
Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?
These are early days so far. I’d honestly like to have seen major increases in my pension pot, but in reality, this is not how these things work. A steady increase is preferable to huge gains & massive losses. This may appeal to some where they are willing to risk all for the big bucks, but this is the majority of my pension income when I retire. Some people bet on the 50-1 horse just in case it wins, but it’s 50-1 for a damn good reason.
What could they have done better?
I have nothing to compare John to, apart from mortgage advisors, but he seems pretty damn good. I enjoy reading his regular email messages & remain confident that I have made a good choice. We meet up just once a year to discuss my pension, but he’s such an approachable guy, I’m sure he’d welcome a chat over the phone or another meeting if I felt we needed it.

Financial advisors have had some bad publicity in the past, so as someone who has worked in the finacial sector it was with trepidation that I approached an IFA. I could not have more wrong. John was friendly and honest , to his detriment he recommended the right thing for me to do (which was nothing) in order not to make a massive loss (despite my appetite for risk). He then did a lot of research in order to help me with a small pension I had with another company, at no point was I made to feel inconsequential due to the smaller amount and his advise and professionalism was of the highest standard. The fee structure was discussed before hand and there were no hidden surprises.
What could they have done better?
I never had to chase John or had any issues. His communication was clear and in a method I appreciated. I think the only thing I would say is , and this is more to his benefit that the customers is perhaps to confirm if he has received his fee, as the information from my pension company does not make this very clear.
