What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

I needed to find the best way to organise my finances when I left my teaching job. I had saved with two finance companies but neither of them gave clear information about how my investments would work and seemed to offer very standard plans with very limited outcomes.

How has Owen Cook helped you?

Owen has invested my capital with a well established company. Their online portal means I can see exactly how all of the funds are performing. The last two years have been a challenge to everyone. At this time it is reassuring to have an experienced agent to advise me on withdrawals and tax efficiency.

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

I am very happy with my decision to change a rigid plan for an investment that is being managed to achieve the best possible results. The transparency is very important to me.

What could they have done better?

I have had no problems with the efficient and organised process during the setting up of my investment or with the process of achieving tax efficiency by maximising the use of ISA's. I have a limited understanding of the financial world so this is rather difficult to respond to.

What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

I needed to find a solution for my long term financial security after leaving full time employment. My pensions were adequate, but it was essential that I protect my savings from inflation. I did assume some growth and I wanted to have access to the funds when necessary. I did not want to manage an investment myself and needed a simple solution with some flexibility.

How has Owen Cook helped you?

When I took my state and professional pension, I also had savings which I wanted to invest to provide some extra income. I had a limited knowledge of investing and I tried two companies offering plans aimed at specific professional groups. However, I realised that both of these packaged plans were generic and inflexible; they offered limited explanations and options. When I found Ablestoke through my bank’s recommendation of Vouched for Advisers, I was impressed by the very transparent explanation of its business; I was able to investigate the site fully. My previous experiences had left me with a very poor impression of the potential for my investment. I was pleased to find that Owen was happy to answer my emailed enquiries in detail. He has recommended a plan with benefits which have exceeded my expectation. I am relieved to have found a company which I feel I can trust to manage my funds. I have a scheduled annual review and I am always able to contact Owen about specific issues when they arise. I also I receive regular correspondence about the company strategies and the fund I am invested in. I will definitely recommend this company to friends and colleagues who find themselves in a similar situation. On or before retirement, people will need to invest a lump sum, or a legacy from a parent. I think this would be an ideal company to safeguard and grow their capital, or to provide additional money for special events.

The results I have seen from my investment have exceeded my expectations. I am able to contact Owen about any issues that arise and he is prompt in offering me guidance and options. Ablestoke has made the process of investing simple and clear and my capital is now managed by a well established and reliable investment company. I have on line access to my funds and I receive regular reports from both the investment company and Ablestoke.

What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

The reason I contacted Ablestoke was curiosity. I had a sum of money to invest and I was unsure how to or where.

How has Owen Cook helped you?

I took advantage of the free consultation with Owen and haven't looked back since. I had concerns abut obtaining advice. For me it was an issue of both trust and competence. After 2008 I was wary of letting go of my money, however Owen helped put the 2008 crisis in perspective and calm those fears. Owen did a full financial health check which identified multiple areas for improvement and lots of money wastage. It took me a year to finally sign up which really annoys me now as that was a lost a year of returns.

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

The outcome was my pensions doubled, thousands in tax saved and really good returns on my other investments. I particularly liked the authenticity and down to earth advice. I feel more in control of my finances and although there might be more crashes to come across my investing lifetime, I feel prearmed to be able to ride them out. I would recommend Ablestoke to anyone. Don't be put off because you think it's not for you. I would ask now how anyone could afford not to.

When my mother died, I wasn’t sure what to do with the portion of her estate I inherited. Apart from a redundancy payment, I had never had much in the way of savings and my pension statements used to depress the hell out of me. I decided I needed professional help.

Yes. The reason I contacted Ablestoke was I was in my late 20s and worried about not having any pension provision at the time, or savings, my financial life was one month to the next. My concerns were that I wouldn't be able to afford to put any money aside for financial products each month. I chose to work with Ablestoke as I was referred from a colleague/friend after discussing this with him. Owen helped me realise my position was a good one in terms of time on my side to start small and grow slowly. Owen and I got on well from the start and the discussions were always friendly, informal and enjoyable with plenty of clarity for the layman to understand. Owen advised on the best vehicles to invest my several pension funds, built up over 45 years, as I approached pensionable age, and arranged for new plans to be set up. So far I cannot praise his advice strongly enough - the funds are performing spectacularly well, and particularly so in the recent months over lockdown. He also assisted both my partner and myself in a complex property acquisition. Whilst the mortgage funders he put us in touch with were eventually unwilling to advance funds, we were able to find another funder, Owen's overall bridging strategy worked out and we now have a lovely home.

The outcome has more than exceeded expectations.

What could they have done better?

It is hard to see how Owen could have improved his advice. That we were turned down by two funders was not Owen's / his colleague's responsibility, and seemed to be down to the unfathomable algorithms they use.

Following an initial call to discuss my situation, Owen proposed that we meet at his office to discuss further. Several days prior to the arranged meeting, I reached out by email to add some further information which I highlighted might change his company's internal assessment of my case. He replied that we should meet as arranged. I travelled to Owen's offices for the meeting but it was immediately apparent that he had no intention of providing any services to me. From the outset, he was abundantly clear he saw my situation / proposed plan of action as something his company would not associate itself with. I therefore proposed we end the meeting, and left after 10 minutes. I respect any adviser's right to refuse business as they deem appropriate but I do not appreciate having my time wasted. A simple reply to my email (in which I outlined the exact points which proved to be contentious) to explain he could not move forward with my business would have sufficed. This would have saved me the journey and a wasted afternoon.

My main concerns about obtaining financial advice were finding an unbiased and trustworthy advisor. I searched online to find an established company with positive reviews and arranged to meet Owen Cook. He was very approachable and took time to explain various investment options in laymen’s terms. Having evaluated my attitude to risk he set up a broad-based portfolio. Nearly 3 years on I'm very satisfied. The reason for getting in contact with Owen was that I needed advice with my pensions and investments, specifically consolidation and simplification. I also desired the idea of an independent financial advisor who has access to the whole market.

What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

We inherited some money and wanted advice on how to make that money best work for us for the future. We had particular concerns for the fact that I have a progressive health condition that may prevent me from working for as long as I'd like, and when we met Owen for the first time we were just starting a family and wanted to secure funds for our children's future. He also guided us through the process of buying life insurance and recommended us a mortgage advisor.

How has Owen Cook helped you?

Owen took a lot of time discussing our concerns and desires, and how much risk we were comfortable taking with our money. He is always incredibly responsive when we need to get hold of him.

Yes. So far, our investments through Owen have helped us augment a reduced salary through maternity leave.

What could they have done better?

To be honest, we have never had any other experiences with financial advisors to compare this one to, but we chose Owen over others because of how prompt he was with his communication and because he took a lot of time to make sure everything he suggested was understandable to us. I needed advice to invest monies that I inherited and on the investment of monies received for taking voluntary redundancy. In addition I wanted advice on using the monies invested to provide me sufficient income to survive financially for 3 1/2 years when my state pension can then be claimed. Additional advice was also sort on minimising my liability for future inheritance tax.

I have only just handed the funds over for him to manage, so it's too early for me to say that I've got the financial outcome I was hoping for, but from my dealings with Owen so far I have the impression that he is very bright, very competent and efficient and knows his field extremely well. So far I have had a very useful and inspiring meeting with Owen. He is extremely knowledgeable and able to clearly and patiently explain complex investment and financial concepts . He also gave me a lot to think about in regards to mortgages, whether to overpay or not, and general saving and investment. I am beginning to see a light at the end of the tunnel as I have left it quite late to start a pension. Owen is very reassuring and took a great deal of time to hear my plans, attitudes to investing and earning, so I feel he is making very informed decisions about my financial life. Getting older and growing up! Responsibilities of family life meant it was time to take the future seriously.

Owen and any of the team he has placed me with have been consistently excellent. He is the 1st IFA I have ever dealt with who speaks to me on a level I can comprehend as opposed to old school approach of baffling me with jargon.
