What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

I manage my own investments and related financial decisions and have done so in the twelve years since retirement, achieving results I am happy with and making a range of investments. I wanted a review by a fresh mind, particularly of my investment strategy and the investments which I had made.

How has Tom Wilcox-Jones helped you?

He accepted the brief - that I was looking for a one-off review and not for ongoing management of my portfolio (which was what other financial adviser firms I had contacted wanted to do) and concentrated on that. The written reports were comprehensive. He gave advice which showed he was listening to what I was saying (I was afraid of getting standardised responses) and which was tailored to my circumstances and to my view of how I wished to approach investment. Both the introductory discussion and the final review discussion were well-conducted and helpful. We also touched on Inheritance Planning and Long Term Care and agreed there were no issues with either that needed action.

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

Yes. Tom gave me advice tailored to my circumstances and in the process showed me where my approach was taking on more risk than I intended to within the overall portfolio, while accepting my basic strategy which included some investment in EIS schemes. By doing so I was stimulated to examine my own assumptions and to write down my strategy for the benefit of myself and also to educate my son.

What could they have done better?

I can't think of anything he could have done better since I got what I had hoped for - both through his specific items of advice and through him stimulating me to think through and write down my objectives and strategy. The only gap in the documentation was that I would have liked a defintion of 'alpha',' beta', 'Sharpe ratio' and 'r2' included in the investment report.

I turned to a financial adviser in connection with my divorce seeking special expertise on financial planning for women. Tom Wilcox-Jones took over from my previous adviser and has been an excellent adviser for me since 2011.

Tom has the ability to explain complicated financial and tax issues to a person with little knowledge in this field (me). He always gives my needs priority and was crucial in advicing me on my pension dealings which determine my current and future life as a pensioner.

What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

I was looking for a posibilty of early retirement due to ill health (Cancer and Arthritis). But if recovery was good there was a chance to carry on working. So I was looking to transfer my pension to a flexible drawdown pension scheme. Tom was my choice after 3 others.

How has Tom Wilcox-Jones helped you?

Tom was very to the point with nothing hidden. After face to face meeting at a recognised office (not at your house) wich was the case with orher IFAs. He was very assuring and listened to what I think I needed and soon pointed out things I had not thought of. He gave me the trust in him that others had not.

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

Yes. What Tom and myself wanted happened. I look now for him to be my FA in the future.

What could they have done better?

Nothing. Tom whent the extra mile when needed.

What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

As a self employed professional reaching State retirement age I had, over a fifty year working career, accumulated a mixed pot of investments. Retirement and Marital status required that our investment income performed ahead of inflation whilst affording long term income for my younger wife. Given the multi choice complexity of the pension market we knew that we needed independent but unbiased advice.

How has Tom Wilcox-Jones helped you?

Tom Wilcox-Jones understood our requirements and provided various options to illustrated differing investment styles and levels of risk ranging from very safe through to more ambitious income performance. Tom clarified our options in clear uncomplicated language allowing time between consultation for us to consider our options and compile any questions. Follow up meetings or phone conversations as necessary led us to a conclusion. Tom provided excellent guidance and most importantly gave us confidence that we had made investment choices that best suit our circumstance.

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

The explanation of choices and the route chosen by us was clearly understood and turned out better than we had expected before our first meeting with Tom. Following the advice received in 2014 and Tom's continuing guidance has seen our funds perform better than expected. We are able to transfer funds ourselves and draw an income to suit our own annual budget. Tom is always available if we need advice.

What could they have done better?

We are very happy with the outcomes achieved thanks to Tom's perception and advice, indeed Tom's strategy factored in most possibilities. Sometimes we became nervous enough to call for assurance, so perhaps "stop press bulletins" from the "bridge" in times of turmoil.... Not that we need glossy magazines or publicity, keep providing the guidance, thank you.

The thing I have found best about dealing with Tom is his ability to make quite complex issues easy to understand. He speaks in language I understand (I have no background in finance) and is happy to go over things as necessary to make sure I know that his advice is appropriate for me and my family.

I can think of nothing that would have improved my dealings with Tom. Approaching retirement age I felt it necessary to consult an independent expert in personal financial matters to give me a clear and concise investment strategy for the future after my retirement date so as to maximise my annual income yet preserve the capital base as much as possible.

How has Tom Wilcox-Jones helped you?

At several one to one meetings, Tom quickly grasped the scope of my financial portfolio as it was 5 years ago and made sound recommendations as to how the portfolio should be structured post my retirement date. His advice was always carefully explained and the risks clearly outlined.

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

Yes indeed. Tom has made some sound recommendations which have been acted upon. What is particularly comforting is that the performance of my portfolio is being constantly monitored and any rough patches identified and corrected.

What could they have done better?

Quite honestly I don't think there is anything that could have been done better. Each year we have an annual review meeting which is not only extremely useful to get first hand the performance of my investments, but also builds an excellent adviser / client relationship which in my view is essential.
