I seperate from my husband and we sold our family home. I needed some help and advice where to keep the proceeds until I knew what I was doing next.

Derek as worked with us for many years, and over this time as advised us openly and honestly about our finances.

What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

I sought advice from Derek in connection with my late husband’s pension when he was terminally I’ll.

How has Derek Dryden helped you?

Derek advised two options in taking the pension. One was to take an enhanced pension due to my husband’s illness and the other option was to take a smaller pension which would transfer to me for life. I am still benefitting from that small pension 25 years later. Derek has further helped me with investing my savings and also the tax free lump sum from my own pension when I retired.

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

Without a doubt. I feel comfortable that I can live carefully but comfortably with my savings and investments.

What could they have done better?

Nothing.

As a couple in a second marriage, we needed some financial advice on savings and investments.

How has Derek Dryden helped you?

Derek explained, in simple English, how different investments work and the risks involved. We wanted to save for the future to enable both of us to retire comfortably before state pension age. After taking Derek's excellent advice, we committed to saving/investing in schemes recommended by him always looking to the long term and not panicking in the short term.

We have both been pleased with the investment growth, which has allowed both of us to take early retirement.

What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

Whilst still working we decided to save some of our salaries on a monthly basis to provide additional income for our retirement years. We attended a seminar regarding financial advice and signed up with the company. Eventually the company was taken over by Gale and Phillipson and Derek became our Financial Advisor.

How has Derek Dryden helped you?

Derek looked at what we had accumulated and through his sound advice and mentoring he introduced us to ways in which we could achieve far better returns on our investments and limit our tax burden. He also helped turn a previous pension pot into an annuity.

Yes we have seen the outcomes we were hoping for and more. Derek has annually visited our risk factor, explained in detail how stocks and shares can fluctuate up and down and has never pushed us into taking on more risk than we feel comfortable with.

Derek has helped me understand the concept of financial risk and how it applies to me. I was surprised to find out I was less risk adverse than I realised following the questionnaires I completed. I feel reassured by Derek's knowledge and expertise in this area and am very happy to take his advice. He is always happy to answer any questions I have throughout the year.

What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

I took Early Retirement in 1999 on Voluntary Redundancy terms in the context of being responsible for 4 elderly relatives. I received a Lump sum payment. In addition some earlier bank investments started to mature. I wanted to look for an independent financial adviser.

How has Derek Dryden helped you?

Derek Dryden helped my wife and I to set up a Whole of Life Policy in 2001 to cover an Inheritance Tax liability. We prepared Wills in 2001. Derek carefully and thoroughly considered our circumstances to determine our attitude to risk. Derek advised us on Investments which included scope to drawdown some income if desired. Derek helped us to cease drawdown when Capital values were declining. Derek has reviewed our circumstances and our attitude to risk as part of an Annual review. Derek has been monitoring the performance of our Portfolios and adjusting their mix and composition to counter the extreme market volatility particularly in the past three years. He clearly explained to us that this would happen.

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

Yes. Derek's help and advice has given us the confidence to cope with the occasions of significant market volatility. The past three years have been an example of extreme market volatility. His help and advice during this time was particularly helpful to us.

What could they have done better?

I do not know if there are matters which Derek could have done better. My overall impression is that he has been consistently helpful in his dealings with our financial affairs. We are personally grateful for his continuing help and support. it is a pleasure to work with him.

Derek helped me amalgamate all of my pensions into the new plan. He explained how a pension could be flexible - rather than just putting 'x' amount into a pot and hoping it was going to work, I could adjust payments and vary my attitude to risk. Derek looks at my overall financial circumstances including levels of savings, mortgage & loans in conjunction with my pension and understands my short term and long term goals. He explains things well and is very patient however stupid my questions may be. Derek arranges annual reviews but always replies promptly to emails in between reviews.

Initial consultation with Derek was to discuss pension for my my husband.

Derek gave the options for taking a pension. My husband was very ill at the time and the two options were to take an enhanced pension which would terminate on my husband’s death or take a smaller pension which would pass to me on my husbands death. Sadly my husband only lived for a year after that but 18 years later I am still benefitting from that smaller pension.

What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

Way, way back many decades ago with thoughts turning to marriage and the possibility of buying our own house, we decided we needed to start saving to achieve these goals..... but how, where, what, how much, how long etc, etc...... no idea, we needed some advice. So, we went out to find who could help us. An independent financial adviser was required and through Easby, Gale and Phillipson we were introduced to Derek.

How has Derek Dryden helped you?

In any way he suggested to help us achieve our financial goals. Having laid out our financial requirements and aspirations we let Derek take the lead (that's what we pay him for!), occasionally quizzing Derek as necessary to understand why, what, how, where and when. We took his advice without exception and, with the obvious and inevitable ups and downs, have carried on this way for around 30 years now. No looking back, no regrets, best phone call we ever made.

What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

I needed advice regarding investing money commuted from my pension fund on retirement seven years ago. I had invested in stocks and shares before but did not have the expertise or the time to dedicate to monitoring fund performance.

How has Derek Dryden helped you?

Derek was recommended to me by a friend. He was able to explain how the investment of funds worked and the risks involved in a very clear way. Over the years I have increased in confidence and even during this last very difficult year when the value of the investment dropped significantly Derek kept in regular contact and reassured me throughout explaining the financial jargon and communications from the company. As a result I felt comfortable that whilst loses would result in the long term things would improve. The regular review of the risk assessment allows me to have some control of the extent of risk at any one time. It is fair to say that my attitude to risk has only improved because of Dereks advice and help and I have always felt very comfortable with the decisions made.

I have been very pleased with the investment performance. I feel that Derek has helped me understand a lot more about fund performance and market behaviour. Fourfold - first to provide ISA investment advice; second to better manage my existing investments; third to consolidate my pension funds; fourth to optimise my portfolio as I planned ahead to early retirement.

He provided holistic investment strategies and advice that matched my needs and attitude towards risk; consolidated my various equity investments into flexible, tax efficient structures; drew together my disparate defined contribution pension funds into one easily managed fund. Derek was also clear when I should leave my preexisting investments or pension funds where they were and explain why that would be in my best interests. All this has helped me achieve the goal of retiring early with several tax efficient sources of income to draw upon.

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

The portfolio which Derek manages for me has seen appreciable growth over the years. This and his all round financial advice have enabled me to retire early. I have recommended Derek to another member of my family who though at a different stage of life is equally pleased with the simple, straightforward, pragmatic approach he has brought to their investments.

What could they have done better?

Financial services is quite rightly a heavily regulated industry and as such any Financial Advisor is obligated to provide regular valuations and reports and updates. This can be overwhelming, and important points can be lost in the sheer volume of documentation. Derek is excellent at sorting the wheat from the chaff for you but be prepared for information overload.

What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

Many decades ago, as a couple, we decided we needed to start up some sort of regular savings vehicle for future use and were also thinking of buying a house so wanting to start exploring mortgage options.

How has Derek Dryden helped you?

In many, many ways! Over the last 20+ years we have used Derek through Easby, Gale & Phillipson for ALL our financial requirements from regular long term savings, personal pensions, work pensions, insurances (income & life), mortgages and more recently even the odd query ref. SFE (student finance). We even received complimentary Wedding Insurance when we first used E, G & P's services - but shhhh best not shout that out too loudly!

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

Yes and continue to - fingers crossed, however we must never forget investments can go both down as well as up! We listen to Derek's advice and actually, without exception have taken it ..... and yes short term there have been the occasional downs but hold fast and they've recovered over time.

What could they have done better?

We have an annual review and given we work full time (as a partnership) it can sometimes be difficult to arrange a mutually convenient time and place, however we always resolve it one way or another - I think if we were totally pushed Derek would agree to come out to us, so it's not really an issue. Paperwork!!! So much of it... but again it's not Derek's fault and online options now make this a lot better, sometimes it can't be avoided. So... nothing really.

WhenI retired in 2000, my employer offered no help on how to invest your pension “pot”. Luckily, I did have contacts that could point me in the right direction, and that eventually lead me to Derek.
