Many years ago it became apparent that being self-employed I didn’t have a private pension , so I started looking for a pension adviser. Fotis is now much more than that to me. He not only assists with my financial planning along with managing my personal pension and ISA but he has been a great source of advice to myself and my family following the sudden passing of my father.

I contacted Fotis to discuss my finances when I had an inheritance to consider and, at the same time, I had to make some decisions about my various pension schemes.

How has Fotis Joannou helped you?

I found Fotis to be very personable and it was easy to have a quite detailed conversation with him about my plans, my concerns and aspirations, and felt it was the beginning of a very positive relationship to manage my investments and pensions.

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

It has taken most of this year (2022) to arrange the investments and complete pension transfers (which always take time), so it is early days - and turbulent times - to comment on outcomes. However, I feel greatly reassured that I have now invested the funds much better than I did on my own, that they are more secure for the longer term and that sharing my concerns has taken a weight off my mind. Early days, but a much better position already.

What could they have done better?

I went into this customer - adviser relationship with eyes wide open, having spoken to several other advisers in previous years, and I was very impressed with the service Fotis provided. He listens, he asks perceptive questions where he needs more detail, and he takes a whole of market view on the options and opportunities available. Not sure he could have done much better!

From the very first conversation with Fotis we knew we were in good hands. We were quite apprehensive as we had already spoken to one financial advisor and felt very uneasy as they had been very pushy, tried to sell us lots of insurance products and their fees seemed incredibly high. In contrast, Fotis took the time to get to know us, was genuinely interested in our lives, our business and how best to maintain our current standard of living after retirement. Fotis put together a tailored financial plan for us showing us exactly what we need to do to achieve our retirement goals. There was never any "hard sell" or push to any specific product and after explaining everything in great detail, we were given plenty of time to consider our options. His advice has been clear, friendly and professional at every stage and his software gave us a great visual understanding of where we should be financially throughout our retirement - which was incredibly helpful. Dealing with his Personal Assistant Stella has also been an absolute dream as she is so efficient, friendly and helpful making the communication and all the required paperwork so easy to handle. Following the death of my parents and receiving a small inheritance in a world of low interest rates and many potential ways to invest the money we approached Fotis to help us make sense of our options.

How has Fotis Joannou helped you?

Fotis initially helped us to better articulate our life goals and ambitions - in essence what is important to us. This sounds obvious but talking through with an expert really helped us to be clear in our own minds what we wanted to aim for and the implications of that in monetary terms. After our initial interactions we made the decision for Fotis to invest and manage the majority of the funds. This was low pressure on Fotis's part and we felt confident that Fotis had really taken time to understand our circumstances and therefore could use this alongside more formal tools to inform an investment strategy. With a young family in the midst of Covid our circumstances seem to keep changing so its reassuring to know we can talk things through with Fotis whenever we need.

Simply having our financial plan written down has been a great confidence booster. Yes things change, but we're able to tie it back to the plan or adjust the plan rather than just feel buffeted by events. What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

I wanted to check that my pension provision was sufficient to give me the possibility of early retirement whilst maintaining a similar lifestyle to the one I currently have.

Fotis looked at our current assets and where our investments could be adjusted to more accurately reflect our risk tolerance. Approaching retirement age with a number of different pension schemes I needed Fotis' help to ensure I achieve a suitable income.

Fotis' knowledge, expertise and attention to detail not only forecast a good return from not a huge pot but that attention to detail ensured that specific terms were not lost or greatly reduced from one of those pensions that had specific terms.

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

As I am still working the pensions have been consolidated where necessary and waiting for retirement decision day. However, the initial forecasts were encouraging but clearly Covid will have a short term effect on those forecasts. But Fotis' continue review and updates will no doubt ensure that we achieve the best of a bad global situation.

What could they have done better?

Not sure there was anything Fotis could have done better. From day one both my wife and I felt comfortable in his presence making us both welcome and not making the process a daunting one. Fotis' attention to detail ensured that no stone was unturned in ensuring that everything was laid out on the table from where the process started in devising the way forward to determine what wpild be included in his review and forecasts.

I was not comfortable with the advice provided by the previous adviser as this conflicted with online information that i sourced. Also the fees being charged for setting up new policies were quite high in relation to other providers charges. I wanted to get the information provided checked by another adviser.

Fotis provided clear advice on the rules and fully outlined the charges applicable. Fotis has a non-sales approach to business which is really refreshing, he just wanted to help find the right solution for me. On the basis of the information and many discussions (on my part) i decided to transfer my pension and set up new ISA funds based upon his excellent market knowledge and recommendations.

My husband was originally looking to transfer a pension fund from a company that he no longer worked for and he was aware that the fund was not performing very well. (It had been a defined contributions scheme as opposed to a defined benefits one.)

What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

I'm self-employed and about 10 to 15 years away from retirement - hence I wanted a "health check" on my existing financial provisions and help with making a plan for the future. While I work in the Finance Industry myself, it made sense to have someone independent with specialist skills in this area.

How has Fotis Joannou helped you?

We held a series of meetings to assess our current financial position, and agree on a plan to meet our future goals. Having made the plan, Fotis and his team helped with all the administration required to set up Pension, Life Cover, Trusts and so on. We'll meet regularly in the future to review where we are against our plans and adjust as necessary according to factors like life events and market changes.

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

We've got exactly what we were hoping to achieve. We've significantly improved our financial and tax planning and got the reassurance that we wanted that we should have a financially secure retirement.

What could they have done better?

The only area that hasn't been perfect is the length of time taken to set up the Life policies - but this was more about the requirements of the provider than any fault on Fotis' part. I would also say that Fotis probably isn't the cheapest IFA, but the service that he has provided has definitely more than paid for itself already.

The circumstances were that our pension savings were appearing to be constrained by the tax laws. We are reaching the age where we are wanting to make sure we get the most from our investments particularly with retirement in mind.

Our relationship with Sentient Wealth is relatively new but what we have experienced so far is an in-depth personal touch with a clearly articulated illustration and focus on our future financial health. This has been arrived at only with the application of their significant financial industry experience and the foundation of robust, proven processes. Importantly they don't cut corners so as not to risk the quality of the outcome. We have been taken through a step-by-step journey in order to fully understand our needs and aspirations and then arrive at recommendations and the implementation of a realistic plan. We now of course need to stick to the plan.... and we look forward to regular, on-going monitoring, feedback and engagement on how it is all going.

Yes we have a clear plan for the way forward and in the longer term we expect Fotis to monitor and keep us on track with the plan.

It is difficult to say what he could have done better from both a professional and interpersonal view points. I had an investment which I wanted to move from the high street bank and I wanted also a more personal service from someone who would explain things to me in a way I could fully understand. I wanted to be able to trust and know my investment was being looked after with my interest the first concern and their own “costs” coming second.

I met and selected Fotis after shortlisting four IFAs following online research and an initial meeting. I was in need of professional guidance as I had recently started a new business and had very little time to explore financial opportunities or to assess and plan for my future pension. I had no experience but wanted someone I could feel comfortable with; someone who could talk to me at my level and explain everything fully. I wanted to find someone I could instinctively trust, but who also would not require a high percentage of my hard-earned safety net! I have never regretted my decision to choose Fotis. He puts my interests first and talks me through essential financial factors, allowing me to make those important decisions about my future with his guidance. Fotis always makes me aware of any tax implications and other important factors. We have built a very steady and trusting relationship and I feel Fotis is watching my investments closely on my behalf, explaining any “waves” in the financial sector. This removes any feelings of panic that perhaps I should be doing something differently! Taking voluntary redundancy and having worked in the City for over 40 years i had lots of different pension amounts that need collecting and being placed in one pot.

Fotis collected all my pension sums and calculated that we had a big enough pot to retire on and which would supply me with a monthly income and leave substantial funds safely invested for the future and impending old age.
