I initially tried to arrange the drawdown of my pensions by myself. This proved to be be not only virtually impossible but also, probably not a sensible idea.

What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

I initially looked for a financial adviser along with my husband as he had a terminal illness and we needed advice about investing his pension and life insurance to give me financial security.

How has Alec Cameron helped you?

Alec has continued to advise me over the last four years since my husband passed away. As I have now moved to a different part of the country this advice has been by telephone and over zoom meetings. We have had at least yearly review meetings but I have been able to contact him whenever I’ve had financial queries throughout this time. Alec has always responded to my requests for advice promptly, in a professional but friendly manner and I continue to have absolute trust in his considered responses. I have found him to be proactive in responding to changes in the markets and prompt to inform me if he’s felt my investments needed to be tweaked, always giving me options and explaining the sometimes hard-to-fathom details as often as needed to help my understanding.

I wanted to get some advice regarding whether or not taking early retirement was viable based on current pensions and assets.

Alec went through the paperwork for all my assets and took considerable time to meet with me both in person and online to establish my individual needs before he started to look at options.

What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

The world of pension income and dealing with pension companies is a complete minefield to us. So it was a real necessity to obtain the advice and assistance of a professional financial adviser.

How has Alec Cameron helped you?

He has contacted and dealt with both our various pension companies, something we were getting nowhere with on our own. He has set up our pension drawdowns and advised us on which funds to leave in place and which should be moved. He has advised us on the most tax efficient way to deal with our other rental incomes moving forward.

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

We plan to start drawing down on our pensions in the new year (2023). So I can only say that, what we have seen that has been put in place for us is actually better than I thought would be possible.

What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

During my first full-time job as a computer programmer at The Bank of England it quickly became clear that planning your work and finances was the key to a successful career. Whilst my initial focus was on savings and loans, as I progressed through the ranks and eventually left to start my own business as an IT Contractor, other factors came into play such as mortgages, pensions and tax efficient savings schemes.

How has Alec Cameron helped you?

Given the demanding nature of Information Technology, I often have very limited time to focus on financial planning and so needed the support and guidance of a professional in this area - in much the same way that customers come to me for advice with their IT infrastructures. I first spoke to Alec when he was working for Ian Starkey and Associates and I was starting to branch out as an IT specialist with very limited knowledge of all the tax efficient pension and savings options. This was very much the early days of financial consultants and before the term IFA even existed. I needed someone I could trust to guide me through the myriad of options available - both good and bad! I immediately struck up a rapport with Alec and as a Scotsman I thought this is person that will look after my money and help it grow. Over the years we have established a friendship that you don't normally see outside of your close circle. I feel that we have grown together in our own respective fields of knowledge.

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

I am now in the twilight of my IT career and had I been able to view the future through a crystall ball, my ideal financial position approaching retirement wouldn't be very far away from where I am now. Alec has helped me to grow a healthy pension pot with plenty of draw down options as and when I need to call on them - his mantra being to minimise charges wherever possible and to be aware of your attitude to risk.

I was interested in findoing out more about Equity Release. VouchedFor should never have referred me to hiom because he has no experience of this type of lending. My husband was diagnosed with a terminal illness and sought advice on the best way to manage his pension funds and future death-in-service payments to provide me with financial security after his death.

How has Alec Cameron helped you?

Alec met with us both initially to guide us through our options and give expert advice on the most suitable options for our specific circumstances. At a hugely difficult time for both my husband and myself, his friendly and sensitive approach was hugely reassuring. Following my husbands death, he has been an invaluable support around any financial issues I have had. He has tailored his advice to allow for my relative lack of knowledge in what can seem very complex areas of finance and always made himself available at the end of a phone or by e-mail when I have needed advice. Our meetings are not daunting - as I anticipated they could be- but more like meeting with a friend who is also an expert!

How has Alec Cameron helped you?

Alec has been providing sound pension advice to me for a number of years now, which has been very welcome. He is a trusted advisor that I can rely on to guide me towards the best investment choice as my circumstances have changed. I think it must be something inherent in the Scottish mentality that they hate to see money wasted and he brings that approach to his work, which is a huge benefit to myself and I'm sure his many other clients.

In my line of work, time is hard to come by and its not always easy to meet up as scheduled so it would be nice to have a quarterly investment report emailed to me or perhaps even better an online portal where current and recent reports are made available.
