What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

We needed a financial advisor because we had some changes to make to our investments and retirement finances and crucially my husband was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s dementia in 2017 and wasn’t going to be able to play his usual role in planning our finances! In these circumstances the most important thing was that we had someone who was understanding and patient with our situation as well as seeing what would be best for us.

I had income and pensions from a number of sources and wanted to understand the best way to take them including in what order of priority.

Initially by looking at my whole financial situation and then recommending investing in pensions for the tax relief and looking closely where my monies were invested in those pensions.

Yes. The advice and recommendations have given me the confidence to know that my finances are going in the right direction for my retirement.

What could they have done better?

I think there is not enough transparency on the costs and charges of pensions. I would like to know what are the costs and charges for all my pensions including those which I have had through employment and therefore were not recommended by my Financial Advisor. Financial Advisors have the skills to challenge the big pension providers to advise their costs.

I have always been the arch sceptic about financial advisers, so it has take me decades to come around to the decision that my wife and I needed a financial adviser to help with retirement planning, investments and wills. There were two main reason I originally chose Anthony and his team. The first was an investment approach tailored very specifically to my risk appetite (foregoing some upside for reduced downside etc) and idiosyncrasies such as not wanting gilt exposure when the long term rates dropped so much. The second reason was a focus around tying the investment strategy into my tax position, both now and as we planned it would change in the future. Yes, all advisors claimed to offer this approach, but I was more convinced this would be delivered with Anthony and seven years later, I am pleased to report that it has. Perhaps an example will help illustrate. Amongst a number of other investments, we used a structured product to give me my upside exposure with limited downside exposure. This is due to mature in the following tax year and will generate a substantial CGT liability. We considered that a sensible way to mitigate some of the CGT due would be to recycle the investment into Seed EIS. I no longer have income tax capacity, but my wife has, so to maximise benefit, part of the investment was redeemed early so we could utilise two yearsÂ’ worth of income tax relief on the Seed EIS, which also halved the CGT bill. The whole process has been managed very smoothly by the team and they have indulged my meddling with the calculations, the timing and the choice of Seed EIS.
