I retired with a lump sum final Salary Pension in 2018 and wanted to make that I put it to optimal financial use

Pretty much Yes. The past few years have seen an unusual series of adverse world wide events, Covid, war in Ukraine, Oil price upheaval and near recession. Considering these factors, my portfolio which has held up fairly well.

How has Chris Weetman helped you?

His confidence and advice have been readily available to me whenever I expressed any concerns about the finacial impact caused by the above 'world wide events'. Chris has vast experience of stock Market behaviour and he couples this knowledge with an understanding my own personal attitude to financial risk. This way Chris ensures that I optimise my returns with a level of risk that is acceptable to me. My confidence in Chris has increased over the years to the extent that I have slightly raised my risk profile to optimise my retrurns...... This seems to be working.

What could they have done better?

Not much. That said, I myself need to be more pro-active on the small stuff ? By small stuff, I mean the best way for me to provide financial support to my grown up children .... mortgage help, Wedding planning etc. Should I do this via a tax free gift process etc ? I need to involve Chris a bit more on this side I think.

Initially to obtain advice on pension planning, but then to consolidate small pension funds into one fund which could derive benefits for a comfortable retirement. Since then Chris has advised regularly on how to maximise the value of my investments.

I was coming up to retirement age and I had a final salary scheme with my employer I had been with for nearly 30 years. What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

I was approaching retirement with a number of old pension schemes dotted around, and my employers occupational pension scheme, which at the time was likely to be used to fund an annuity. I had no clear strategy on retirement and how I could afford to give up work. I needed to get advice on how to consolidate the varying funds and what was possible with the new pension freedoms.

How has Chris Weetman helped you?

Chris provided the advice I was seeking, and even further insights than I had expected regarding options on pension funds, SIPPs, and retirement planning. We have since extended that to cover my wife’s pension funds and created a position which has allowed her to retire earlier than anticipated. Chris covered all the mechanics of pension fund transfers and creation of our SIPP Income Drawdown schemes.

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

Absolutely, and more besides. Before meeting Chris I was pretty pessimistic about what retirement would look like for me. Now however, my position is much healthier than I ever imagined, with a clear plan as to how the future will pan out. On the basis of the outcomes, I have referred a number of friends to Chris, two of whom I know have now engaged him as their IFA and are happy with the service they get as well.

What could they have done better?

This is probably the hardest question to answer when the service received is of such excellent quality. Regular reviews mean we stay up to speed with changes which might be needed, and the use of the secure messaging service in Otus Focus means that Chris and his team are always available to answer questions or liaise with the pension platform providers on our behalf. Continued service at this level is what I would expect in future.

I had to decide whether a cash lump sum or a 'final salary' pension was most beneficial to me.

How has Chris Weetman helped you?

He openly discussed the benefits of both. He was mindful and open about the fact that transferring to cash was beneficial to himself. Nevertheless I felt I received genuine and impartial advice that favored the 'cash' option. I had more or less concluded this myself. Chris helped to crystallize my reasoning. He has also stretched his advisory remit beyond my immediate investment portfolio to things like Inheritance that may be due to me, as well as mortgage assistance I considered for my grown children. Where Chris couldn't advise directly, he put me in touch with someone that could advise. Basically, he is my 'one stop shop' for things financial

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

Honestly, yes and no. Yes because Chris' openness and honesty continue to be a guiding factor. The 'no' is hesitant, and only because the Markets have been a little static, which coupled with my declared 'low risk' approach has meant that my investment hasn't rocketed. I would be delighted with a more buoyant market but I can't blame Chris for that. That said, my investments have kept abreast of a static, non invested approach.

What could they have done better?

Not much. Early last year I'd asked for greater clarity on investments vs pension drawdown as well as outgoing fees, including fees to Nucleus (Nucleus consolidate my various investments into a manageable online account). Whilst this wasn't available from my finance advisors portal (Otus), Chris provided me with access to the Nucleus Portal which DID provide the granularity I wanted. It's good that this exists and should be offered to all new clients, who can then decide whether they want this level of granularity or not
