How has Brian Kerr helped you since your last review?

Brian ensures regular catch ups happen and is not an IFA who fades into the background (as I have heard from colleagues some do). I think the big moment this year which merits a special mention is towards the start of the COVID crisis in February and March. Watching what was happening in other country's (I was perhaps more aware than some due to being part of a multinational family) I was concerned we were in a scenario where markets were going to just keep dropping and dropping. Having explained this concern to Brian's team, a call was quickly arranged and I left suitably reassured as to the best course of action [in my case the best course of action being to leave well alone]. 9 months on - I am more than happy with that advice and current picture is way better than I could have predicted back in March. Possibly more changes to come in the coming year and I'm still very pleased to have picked Brian and team back in 2018 (via Vouchedfor!)

As the interest rate offered by Banks and Building Society’s is very low and I had no experience with investment I knew I needed advice in order to see any growth in my savings.

He was able to explain how investments worked. Who would be doing the investment. What the cost of the service would be. He took a lot of time and trouble to ensure I understood about investments and to reassure me of the experience and expertise of the Fund Manager He enabled me to see my attitude to risk and what that meant concerning how I would be prepared to have my savings invested. He put me at ease so I felt able to ask any question.

What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

The passing of my wife last year led to a need to reappraise my financial priorities in the altered situation, especially my attitude to risk which I sensed was changing.

How has Brian Kerr helped you?

Brian teased out information which clearly demonstrated that my attitude to risk was markedly different to that pertaining when my wife was alive. Against that background he examined in depth my existing investment portfolio and recommended changes in those areas where it was practical and eminently sensible to do so, given the change in priorities in my personal situation. Further, once approved by me, those changes in investment were taken forward administratively on my behalf relieving me entirely of that burden and thus giving me greater peace of mind.

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

In the short term, I have seen the outcome I sought – a restructuring of my finances aiming to meet my aspirations into the future. In the longer term, it will remain to be seen if those goals are achieved especially against a background of the volatility of the UK, Scottish and World economies caused by unprofessional politicians.

What could they have done better?

Nothing could have been done better. To date, I have had four meetings with Brian. In contrast to the politicians referred to above, I have been impressed by his style and professional approach. After each of those meetings, I came away feeling completely satisfied that his guidance and recommendations led me to make decisions that were in my best interests. I know that I can approach him at any time should I have any questions or issues requiring his input and this I find most reassuring.

We were looking for a review of our current financial status and for advice on planning for the future, particularly with regard to providing security and opportunity for family.

Brain took a more through and in-depth approach than we had even been anticipating. He helped in the laying of firmer foundations in terms of protection and insurance, which was vital and reassuring with regard to family. What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

I had a number of occupational pension schemes with substantial CETV figures which I had been considering transferring out in order to give me, and my family, increased flexibility - including early retirement options, and improved options for my, comparatively young, family should I pass away at an earlier than hoped age.

How has Brian Kerr helped you?

Brian clearly understood that I'd been considering options at some length and took the time to listen to the conclusions I'd reached before validating (and indeed, in various ways,challenging) my thinking. Having agreed to move forwards, Brian and his team proved very efficient both in progressing the work and (important to me) keeping me informed regularly. The transfer work is all but done, although some investment adjustments are still to happen. It is early days but I'm comfortable with how we are progressing. Another aspect which I've appreciated is clarity on what Brian needs from me in order for him to do his job - e.g. information needed to help plan for the future. Key thing - I work in financial services but, even so, talking about large sums of my own money is something that naturally leads to the second thoughts/nervousness and all that natural stuff. This is a big strength - Brian was very willing to explain how things work in a way I could understand, and I've no doubt that would apply for clients with all levels of financial experience.

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

The transfer work is all but done (efficiently) and we've met recently to discuss the active management of the associated investments. It is early days in a longer term investment but I am happy with the strategy we are taking and am confident that should I wish to change anything, Brian and his team will be ready to discuss.

after our son became unemployed we took on some of his commitments and we ourselves found that it was becoming a strain on our finances. Equity Release seemed to be an option.

The provision of a synopsis of the meeting, would provide some time to allow reflection of the conversation following the meeting. Also I feel that if there were more visible tools utilised (i.e. power point presentation), which could then be shared with me it would provide a product that I could take away and use to allow a more informed process for making decisions. (even emailed following the meeting). Perhaps consideration around a portal where clients can access their information?

We had multiple pensions/savings but not taken an interest in the future beyond that. We felt it was time to get our house in order. We used VF to find Brian.
