What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

I had several pensions and wanted them transferred to one provider. I had also reached age 55 and was considering accessing my pension to pay off our mortgage. My husband was also nearing 60 and considering early retirement. We were concerned about our financial future and needed good advice.

How has Sean McDermott helped you?

We did a lot of research before contacting Sean. He has been fantastic. Sean is very approachable, explains everything clearly and always responds very quickly. He helped us to plan our future and to think about what we wanted to enjoy. Sean then helped us to plan our finances to be able to achieve our goals.

Absolutely. Since our first meeting just over five years ago, I have been able to semi retire and now work part time only. My husband retired almost three years ago. Our mortgage was paid off three years ago. Our pensions are performing really well. We're very much enjoying life and have no worries about our future income.

After completing his online documentation, I had a 90min face to face meeting. There was a tentative plan put together which took a drawdown from my DB scheme first instead converting DC scheme pots into tax free cash and a 7yr fixed term joint life annuity with GMA of £109k, the annuity would pay £27k pa. The IFA fees and the proposed IFA plan were not clear enough to me as regards meeting my objectives, in short, the benefits of using an IFA were not clear. I did provide further written details on my own plans via email, so far I have yet to receive an acknowledgement or feedback. My overriding reflection on this experience is that IFA’s have a target to collect as many clients as possible to accumulate assets under management to ensure the collect year on year fees.

Hi Rob, Thank you for taking the both the time to come in and see me for a meeting and also for writing this review. I'm sorry that you don't feel that our 90 minute 'exploration meeting', to discuss your life goals, financial plans and current assets wasn't beneficial to you even though you have not incurred any professional fees so far. You are correct in that at this stage the cashflow plan was only 'tentative' as i simply would not be able to be conclusive on any formal plans or recommendations until you agreed to proceed with paying us for a regulated financial plan. For this we charge a flat fee and is irrespective of the level of your investable assets, this was explained in both our meeting and also in my follow up email for total transparency. In regards to your comment about IFA's having targets to accumulate clients, i'm sorry you feel this way but as the business owner of LightSide, I do not set any targets for myself and most of our new clients do come from personal recommendations. When we met, I suggested several areas where i did not agree with your own self advised plans and why, but you have put a lot of work and research in yourself to do this and therefore do not see the value in my professional and highly regulated advice. That's ok as not every one we meet with becomes a client and is under any obligation to do so. Finally, your enquiry was around inheritance tax planning but our conversation and meeting was focused more around retirement planning. My role is a chartered financial planner is to advise holistically and try to provide value across all areas of financial planning which for the majority of clients we do. Myself and the team wish you the best of luck continuing with your own plans. Sean

I met with Sean yesterday to discuss my options regarding my Merchant Navy Services pension after him being recommended by two different people (who do not know each other). Despite me feeling quite anxious as this pension option malarkey is all new to me and has been described to me as a minefield, Sean and his team made me feel relaxed immediately with their friendliness and professionalism. During the hour long session he explained the pros & cons of all the options in a way that I could easily understand using all his experience and knowledge, without any kind of sales pitch or pressure which was most welcome. I had a financial planning meeting with Sean through vouched for. Sean contacted me by phone and took some basic details then offered me a free meeting on-line or in person. I chose the face to face meeting which lasted for one hour. I received a general email about getting impartial advice on my pension. My response resulted in being contacted by Sean.

Sean has helped me work out my attitude to risk and advised me where to invest based on that result. He has also calculated how much I will need to live comfortably in my retirement. Sean has kept me updated on the performance of my investments and provided an online portal so that I have access to this information myself.

Yes. I was expecting the performance of my investments to be a rather poor after the covid situation and the repercussions of brexit, however I have recently learned that they have not done as badly as I thought.

With all due respect. I thought it was expensive, at 1k per year, and 1.5k for a plan. So, I am looking at the market. I thought 2.5k in the first year, it was as just not my plans.

Sean went beyond the normal remit in exploring whether he would be able and qualified to advise me on my complex situation (transferring a UK pension now that I am a US resident). He worked tirelessly even during a vacation so that I was able to satisfy my pension trustee's arbitary deadline. I would certainly recommend him as a diligent and determined adviser who is able to see past the black and white of normal cookie-cutter practice and work with more unusual circumstances.

I was looking for advice on moving my pension from my employer to another pension provider.

Sean reviewed my cash value transfer sum and my current pension, we then arranged to talk and discuss. Sean asked me my reasons for wanting to transfer my pension, listened to all my concerns and then advised me of the potential risks, the FCA's expectations of someone wanting to transfer out a final salary pension. This advise was key to my decision, I have considered all the options and I am going to leave my pension where it is but intend to annually obtain a cash transfer value to ensure my pension is increasing as expected.

I am really happy and feel reassured my Sean's advise that my pension is secure and this is all as a result of the expert advise received by Sean.

What could they have done better?

The only thing I would have liked was a face to face discussion as my discussion was by phone, but this would have taken Sean away from his job but I would have been happy to pay for this
