What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

We sold a second home and needed advice on investments in relationship to Inheritance Tax and Care Home costs planning

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

Yes although we still have work to do to bring it to a conclusion

How has Richard Elliott helped you?

He developed future scenarios incorporating our anticipated expenditure which identified projected Inheritance tax liabilities and how these might be minimise or planned for. An extra unexpected benefit was his focus on a lifestyle based on 'Enough' rather than increased income which has had a profound effect on our thinking about the future and which we have already started to implement.

What could they have done better?

Richard sent quite a bit of information which we were unable to deal with immediately and then struggled a bit to find it within the secure portal as much was date limited. The information which was e mailed was readily available. Maybe it would have been easier to see it all in the portal available until either we deleted it as no longer required or after say 6 months.

I have had an initial face to face meeting with Richard. Excellent first impression. He was methodical, and went through a list of questions to learn about my background, current financial situation and what are my objectives with regards to my investments. His answers and explanations to my queries were very clear. The meeting was very helpful and I have a clearer idea now what information I need to collect and what variables I should consider in retirement planning.

Well the info has been correct. It is just difficult to foresee what the future financial markets etc might be in such a turmoil worldwide that seems to affect the growth of our investments

I had a number of different pension policies and a business associate of mine who was an existing client of Charles Stanley recommended I contact Charles Stanley for advice about consolidation into a SIPP.

Richard is actually my third Charles Stanley advisor and has sought to improve my return on the SIPP that was already in place when he first took over my case.

I don't monitor this regularly and appreciate that circumstances have been abnormal in recent years.

What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

We had a good secure retirement income already in place, but significant sums sitting in very low interest current accounts and other securities. Overall our position was "satisfactory", but we wanted to optimise some aspects without having to get involved in a lot of ongoing need to keep "fiddling around" with investment details. We were recommended to use Richard's firm by a close relative who had a very satisfactory relationship with another aspect of the same firm.

How has Richard Elliott helped you?

Spent a lot pf time in discussion and analysis of our future needs and lifestyle versus current and projected financial position, culminating in recommendations for wherte best to put funds for investment and savings.

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

Too early to say really - these are long term investments and were deposited within the last 6-8 months. However at this point we certainly do not have any reason to be dis-satisfied.

What could they have done better?

Nothing really - we liked Richard's approach of looking at our overall lifestyle picture, rather than a purely financial returns operation.

We wanted advise on long term savings and pension planning - and that was over 20 years ago. Richard helped us set up our pensions and savings, and has been looking after them ever since.

As the years have gone by Richard has made sure our investments were always on course to achieve what we wanted for our retirement. He has been able to change and adjust our plans as our employments and circumstances have changed. In addition he has always explained what our options are and helped us make decisions when necessary

Yes - I have retired, and my husband is 'winding down'. World-wide disasters and UK economic wobbles not withstanding our funds look good for a long and happy retirement.

What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

We had used Charles Stanley as Investment Advisers for over 20 years. Separately, for 15 years we had held a substantial and hopefully safer Investment Bond just in case of a “rainy day”. Our previous IFA had lost interest in this portfolio. Although the Bond was performing reasonably well it had not been evaluated for over 5 years.

How has Richard Elliott helped you?

From the initial free consultation it was apparent that Richard was well qualified to advise. The thoroughness of his subsequent investigation and advice has been very reassuring.

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

A better performing, more income tax efficient Bond has now been arranged. The family should now benefit from additional IHT saving aswell. We look forward to a continuing relationship with Richard and this separate division of Charles Stanley.

What could they have done better?

Richard did very well bearing in mind these strange times and the lack of the possibility of face to face meetings. It is easy to be misunderstood when only zoom etc is available.

I've never had a financial adviser even though I have property and investments which I have made on my own. I also wanted to look at inheritance tax and whether I was doing the best for my family.

How has Richard Elliott helped you?

He explained very clearly the possible scenarios and advised the best course of action with regard to inheritance tax. He also confirmed that the investments I had made were generally okay but could be tweaked and suggested ways to do this.

I have a clear idea of what I need to do and have already started to implement what he suggested.

One possible idea I have been introduced to since the advice given is Equity Release as an option - I don't recall discussing this although I may be mistaken on that.

What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

Early retirement made a financial plan essential as we had a long time to manage ensure we could sustain our standard of living. We also had number of pensions and savings, and some cleaning up and consolidation was needed to make planing and management easier.

How has Richard Elliott helped you?

After consultation to understand our current situation along with needs and hopes for the future, he development a detailed cash flow model. The allowed us to understand how we needed to manage the resources we had , and also to perform some "what if" modeling to see the impact of some options. He also advised on some passive investment option, which suited our view of risk.

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

Yes, we have been much more comfortable having a regular review of our situation as the future unfolded.

What could they have done better?

In recent years the financial markets have been more volatile, and impacts like Woodford are worrying for cautious investors. I would have like to see some tailored communication on how these things affect my type of circumstances. The company Richard worked for didn't provide much of this, I believe his new company is better placed to provide this.

Richard took plenty of time to understand all our financial goals, not just our retirement and our attitude to risk because there was always going to be a certain amount of investment and as we all know, investments can go down as well as up. For instance we also wanted to minimise any burden on our children regarding inheritance tax. He applied all our aims into a financial model along with our current and expected expenditure, and our sources of income (pensions and savings etc). We were then able to see if we had any shortfalls for what we wanted to achieve.

We are very pleased with the process and what Richard has put in place. We have regular meetings to update the plan if necessary and check we have sufficient funds.

I gave Richard all my financial information and he ran a forecast and confirmed that I was in a good position for retirement. He then arranged for all the transfers of my existing private pension plans (through previous employments) to be consolidated into a single pension platform, which makes it easier to understand and manage. He has advised on my options for taking lump sums versus drawing income in order to protect my current and future tax position.
