What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

After receiving a legacy in 2005, I used an Independent Financial Adviser for the first time. His fees were hidden in the charges attached to the Investment Bond I took out, and he dishonestly advised me to ditch my final salary pension scheme contributions in favour of a private pension! I managed to cancel the pension application but lost all trust in financial advisers and didn't contact him again. I kept the bond (unmanaged) for 11 years as it was doing quite well, but then in January 2016 I saw an article in the MoneySavingExpert.com weekly newsletter highlighting VouchedFor's offer of a free financial plan. With savings interest rates so low, I decided it was worth having another go at a managed investment.

How has David Milne helped you?

My experience with David was the polar opposite of my previous encounter with the dodgy "old school" adviser. David is very approachable and friendly but also knowledgeable and pragmatic; right from the start I trusted his advice and never at any point felt pressurised into making a decision, as I had done with my first adviser.

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

I was worried from the start about the result of the referendum but my investment bond did well in its first year and has been holding ground this year. It's a low risk investment and has been doing as well as expected, in the current financial climate. David has been very willing and helpful in rejigging the bond's make-up to keep up with economic changes.

I can't think of anything...

He outlined the different risks involved and discussed our attitude to those risks. He then produced a portfolio of different investments and at no time did we feel pressured.

The returns produced from that investment exceeded our expectations both in percentage terms and the timescales involved to achieve this. We were realistic in understanding that investments can go up as well as down but it shows with the right advice and their understanding of the different products available helped us to make an informed decision.

I am a lost cause when it comes to finances and after inheriting a small lump sum i decided to take some professional advice.

How has David Milne helped you?

David talked me through different options. He took into account my current circumstances, my own life choices, my beliefs and plans for the future. This means I felt listened to and not driwning in a sea of overwhelming financial possibilites.

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

I feel I can trust the choice of ethical investments I have made, and I am seeing a slow but steady increase on this (which reflects the lower risks I took).

What could they have done better?

perhaps there could be more simplified documents to read/links to websites that explain different financial possibilities so I could research my options more. Whilst I feel safe with my decisions I still feel lost financially and am quite reliant on the advice given. It would be nice to become more financially independant, but perhaps this is on me to do rather than be spoon fed by my advisor!

Excellent advice from David on pensions. What can be quite complex subjects were explained well. David gathered all the information necessary in order to build a profile of my existing investments and from this information was able to put an action plan together that should result in an improvement in my situation at retirement. Advice from independent financial advisers should be viewed in the same way as using as any other professional such as a solicitor. This is not a cheap & cheerful skim across your documents by "the lad in the building society" moreover an in-depth analysis of your finances resulting in a plan to put more money in your pocket. This level of advice does have a price tag. Moving forward, David will be helping me with other financial requirements. Cannot say fairer than that!

David was very thorough in establishing my situation and looking at the possible choices. In my case, due my particular circumstances, the usual investment options were not open to me. I appreciated David's openness. I felt he was concerned to really understand my needs, and he didn't pretend to have all the answers available instantly. Finally, there wasn't an easy solution he could recommend, but put himself considerably out to research further and suggest a different sort of advisor. I felt confident in David as an honest advisor.

My father passed away, leaving me an inheritance. It prompted me to undertake a full assessment of my financial affairs, something I have never undertaken. I have never thought much about my future, and it was a wake-up call.

How has David Milne helped you?

Firstly, David is an honest, friendly and approachable individual. I found myself immediately at ease with his approach. He undertook a full assessment of my assets, income and expenditure. We used this to plan my future saving targets including a personalised stocks and shares ISA and pension arrangements. He also set up a life and critical illness policy against my mortgage which is essential for my circumstances. He was also very flexible, seeing me at times that suited me, i.e. outside of office hours.

I am now saving considerably more than I was before, making better use of the capital I have and am confident that I have made suitable arrangements for my eventual retirement.

David explains very thoroughly the steps he has taken to provide a recommendation - this includes fact-finding, using research consultants to research products on the market. He is an excellent communicator and is keen to ensure I understand the nature of the products and implications of moving my funds to them. He responds to questions quickly, and provides responses in terms understandable to a layman (a very useful skill in complex topics such as pensions) and has a comprehensive understanding of the features offered by certain products.

Very helpful and thoughtful throughout. We were particularly impressed by his contacting us periodically to let us know what was happening at his end and to find out how things were progressing on our's. On the very few occasions when we had to call him, he would respond immediately.

He could not alway explain to us why some building societies have the peculiar rules they do. But then I don't think anyone else could either - not even the societies themselvesÂ…Â….
