What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

I wanted to transfer out of my existing pension.

How has Grant Miles helped you?

Grant has given me valued financial advice on all aspects of investments, savings and pensions. He organised my pension transfers and is my ongoing financial adviser. He provides pension reviews monitoring and changing investment funds if beneficial as well as the most tax efficient ways to withdraw money. The James & Co portal also provides online views of my funds as well as other features.

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

Yes. Despite volatility in the stock markets our funds have performed well and we have continued to enjoy a comfortable lifestyle.

What could they have done better?

Nothing. Grant and his team always respond to any communication very promptly and action any requests straight away.

What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

Having worked for five decades and with a fairly unsophisticated approach to pensions and investments during that time, I found myself within a few years of my State Pension with a disparate and unrelated cluster of cash, occupational and private pensions and various shares and ISAs. Recognising that with high inflation, low interest rates on savings and significantly low returns on Annuities, I was increasingly likely to be relying on a shrinking State Pension as my main source of income in the long term and needed some professional advice. Wary of picking an IFA without personal recommendation I approached a trusted mortgage advisor who had given various family members excellent advice over a number of years and she kindly took time to research a good match for my needs and put me in touch with Grant (thank you Alex from Lendese).

How has Grant Miles helped you?

I assumed that Grant would look at my finances, persuade me to invest when and where he recommended and I would keep my fingers crossed and trust he was right. Instead of which Grant spent a long time in the initial stages working with me to assess my individual approach to financial risk, ensuring I understood how we were going to build a short, medium and long term strategy, with the flexibility to reflect my changing needs over time, before we even progressed to discussing the financial products which would help me achieve this aim. Interestingly the element of trust I anticipated was much more about Grant working with me to build my knowledge and confidence to trust myself, with his guidance, to make the financial decisions that best suited me. Having been economically inactive from choice for a few years my IT skills were a little dated but while he used cutting edge technology to help him build my portfolio he was happy to begin our financial partnership using the telephone. We are now fully IT operational! He didn’t flinch, when discussing some shares I inherited, that the only reason I had for keeping them was for ‘sentimental reasons’. He also accommodated a slight wobble in the early days when I changed my mind at the last minute and decided to keep a larger amount of cash in a very, very, low interest account as a financial crutch. Happily a few months later, with advice from Grant, I was confident about investing the cash into my personal pension to take advantage of tax incentives, with a very successful outcome. I still have the shares…

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

I now have a regular income from my investments, which will be reviewed when I reach State Pension age and while I understand that investments can go up as well as down, I have a balanced portfolio that has made full use of my tax allowances and which allows me to maintain my current lifestyle but with the flexibility to adapt to my changing needs over time.

What could they have done better?

I suspect the only thing Grant could have done better was not made me work so hard to ensure I had the knowledge and confidence to take responsibility for my personal finances. It must also be recognised that it hasn’t been just Grant who has provided an excellent service but also thanks need to go to Susan Harris his PA. Not only does she answer my emails quickly, she is always happy to clarify any minor issues, or talk me through some of the administrative requests from Grant and, in what set the tone for my working relationship with both Grant and Susan, she called to introduce herself at the very beginning, a small but significant insight into the one to one personal care I have received throughout from my financial ‘team’.

We were looking to buy a property out in North Cyprus and we found Grant via the North Cyprus Expats Facebook group.

I had a large sum of money left to me in a inheritance (that was also in the hands of Grant Miles when it was my nan and grandads money) So I felt it should stay in safe hands and help me know what to do with it and where to put it.
