I was coming up to retirement, I had a number of pensions from different companies which I wanted to consolidate into a single place. I also wanted to ensure I had sufficient funds to support my retirement plans which would also help with determining the date of my retirement.

Greg was very patient and easy to talk to. He walked us through the financial planning software prompting us to consider different aspects of retirement. It really helped in planning my retirement. Consolidating the pensions was completely stress free. The investments over the years we’ve been with Greg have way outperformed anything we could have achieved with a bank.

He has consolidated our investments using a third party investment management company. He carried out an appropriate attitude to risk assessment and recommended investments that fitted that profile. Returns have been as good , or better than expected. He referred us to another professional for appropriate inheritance tax planning.

Greg Simkin is the opposite of " a pushy salesman" to the point where he could perhaps be a little more proactive at times.

What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

I had a reasonable cash pot in savings which was not growing as it was sat in a simple building society savings account. My wife and I decided that we needed advice on how best to invest for the growth.

How has Greg Simkin helped you?

During our sessions Greg modelled my savings and personal pension pots and the growth and risk I was taking with this pot. During his modelling, which he provided as part of the free sessions, Greg worked through my pension plans and explained the lifetime allowance issue I was destined to hit and demonstrated how much I could live on if I retired at 60 and now. This modelling changed my outlook on work/life balance and I have firmed up my retirement plans and feel comfortable that I can retire without the addiction of a wage.

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

Yes I have decided to retire 2 years earlier than I though would even be possible before speaking to Greg. It was really worthwhile action and I wish I had done this many years ago and not left it due to apathy.

What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

We looked for a financial adviser about 5 years ago to understand how early we could retire and to look at how we might manage our pensions.

How has Greg Simkin helped you?

Greg listened and explained our options very clearly, he also used an online planning tool which gave us a clear understanding of what we needed to meet our desired retirement aims. Greg then researched my husband's rather complicated ex workplace private pension and came to the conclusion that, at that time, the arrangement we had on fees meant that we should not move it at that point. He also suggested that although there were no guarantees - we should consider putting a case to the FCA for pension miss- selling from 20 years before. We did this ourselves and after 2 years received a substantial addition to the pension fund which enabled us to retire earlier than we had imagined, we would never have thought that this was a possibility after so long, and owe that to Greg's encouragement. We eventually transferred the private pension to Greg's management once it started to be paid. We have since added other investments to our portfolio following a redundancy and inheritance .

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

Absolutely, in fact we couldn't have imagined we would be in the position we are now, after that initial meeting. The market drop, that followed last year's lock down was a little scary as we had both just retired, but Greg was very proactive ringing us regularly and talking through our concerns. Once again his advice was sound and as we made additional investments as the market recovered and we are very pleased with the returns. The ongoing fees are not cheap but to date these have been justified by the returns and we are confident this will continue. I think the most important comment that I can make is that while fully understanding Greg has a business to run, I trust that he will give us the best advice for our circumstances as he did at the beginning of our relationship with him, even if that meant that the advice was 'stay put for now'.

In preparation of retirement, I needed to consolidate several mony purchase pension schemes I had accumulated over the years from different employees and wanted to free up some tax free cash for a home improvement project.

Ihad bought my house using Endowment Policies which would not pay the mortgage when they matured. Greg helped me remortgage. When I retired hed advised me on investing my lump sum.

How has Greg Simkin helped you?

Told me my options and explained them in understandable language. He was always willing to explain and never patronising when something that seemed simple to him was initially incomprehensible to me.

We were coming towards retirement and really concerned on how the best way to manage our savings etc.

Greg reviewd in depth all of our financial from savings through to pensions etc and proposed investing and pension changes.

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

Overall when we entered the world of financial advice we were very sceptical especially having tried before with a couple of other "Experts" and not been given accurate data. Since having Greg on board we have settled down he is professional without being condescending and has worked to provide exactly what was promised at our first meeting.

What could they have done better?

When attending reviews perhaps a move varied option on coffee. In all seriousness there is nothing I can suggest to help improve the service Greg and the team offer.

What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

I had received a divorce settlement and with little knowledge of financial matters, needed advice and guidance on pensions and investments.

How has Greg Simkin helped you?

Greg explained in very clear terms what my options were at that particular time and gave me detailed, concise and easy to understand information that suited my situation. As it happens, the law re access to private pensions changed at this time and Greg was instrumental in helping set up a plan that enabled me to pretty much immediately access a pension that would have taken nearly ten years to become available and then only with certain conditions attached to it. Being able to access this pension has quite literally been a life saver and without Greg's expert advice and assistance I would not be as financially independent as I am now.

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

Without Greg's expert financial advice and guidance, I would still be living in the UK, in a job I was very dissatisfied with, and with no current financial security and more or less just waiting to retire to start living. With Greg's help and recommendations, I now own my own home in Cyprus, have a regular healthy income from my pension and am happy and relaxed as a result.

What could they have done better?

I don't think Greg could have improved any more on his service to me. He and his team are so friendly, helpful and most of all knowledgeable where and when it's needed.

I was looking for a new financial advisor as my existing advisor did not have expertise in pension advice. Greg's firm offered an end to end view of my finances, understanding of my particular needs and no pressure to take on unnecessary advice in areas I was already comfortable.

Greg spent a good balance of time understanding our needs, recommending options and explaining them in sufficient detail that we understood enough of the complex financial transactions and associated risks for us to feel comfortable with the decisions we made.

Too early to say hence the 4 stars instead of 5. We are happy with the choices and forecast success.

What could they have done better?

All financial advisors have a huge job on their hands to explain the complex world of investments. We were happy that we had great advice and explanations from Greg but some items had to be explained to us a few times in different ways to make them stick. To Greg's credit he had these different methods of explanation available to him. Perhaps being able to judge the right explanation earlier would have made the service even better. Big ask though.

Greg listened to what I was expecting from the session, then after looking at all figures explained his preferred option and the reasoning for it. Not a big gap between options. He spent some time in explaining his charges, what was covered by the charges and how the service is continually monitored. I left feeling much more informed about pensions in general and mine in particular.

Having very recently approached Greg for advice and obtained his services I can only say that I have been impressed with his candour and genuine desire to ensure that: a) I was fully aware of what I could expect from his services and b) what would best meet my individual needs. Firstly I would like to exp lane why I have awarded 3 stars and not more on Value. We do know exactly what we are being charged but as we are relatively new to Greg we need to see how things unfold before we can honestly say whether the charges are outweighed by the benefits, however on current performance it would appear so. I think Greg's strap line says it all," Refreshingly Honest Financial Advice " , we had had experience of other advisor's and were very nervous and therefore had not signed up for their services. After our first meeting with Greg it became clear we were dealing with someone who is very approachable and goes the extra mile to make sure you fully understand what can be a complex subject for the average person. In the time we have been with Greg our confidence has grown to the point where as Trustees of a lifetime portfolio we have decided to transfer this into his care. i
