Dan has been influential in helping us get to grips with our retirement prospects and given us some really valuable advice in the short time that we've known him. I was put in touch with him by another adviser as he is qualified to give advice on final salary pensions. I had received a statement from my old employer with what seemed like a huge transfer value given the paltry annual pension that I was expecting and was looking to transfer the plan to a private pension plan. Dan advised against this (another adviser I know had suggested I should transfer!). He explained how the pension will grow in retirement and it would be virtually impossible to replicate elsewhere as I am fairly conservative. In the end I took a tax free lump sum from and a guaranteed annual income for life and have supplemented this through ISAs and my wifes pension with Dan. It's early days but we are very happy so far.

Yes. It’s early days at the moment, but I am happy I didn’t transfer my final salary in the end.

What could they have done better?

It took quite a long time to review the final salary pension and I was worried we were getting too close to the cut off date, but my understanding is that HSBC were dragging their heals and not providing the right information.

In 2011 I set up my own business as a freelancer, having left a large management consultancy business. I'd also moved out of London and bought a house in the suburbs and become a father, and needed to think about my finances.

Dan and I met while I was in a period of transition between permanent and self-employed, a life moment, and the timing could not have been more fortuitous. He met with my wife and me, and took a lot of time to understand us personally and professionally; who we are, our family situation, our careers, our current financial status, future aspirations etc. At the same time, he helped educate us (mostly me) on the basics of financial planning and ensured we were adequately protected, and investing appropriately for both the long-term and the short-term, in the most efficient manner. We set a date at which we wanted to stop disposing of our income with abandon, and plan for family, house, pensions, possible life scenarios, and so on.

I am really glad that I relented and took that phone call, many years ago, suggesting I review my personal finances. If you know what you want to do, then, sure, you can use robo-advisors and invest in trackers. However, that technology is answering questions from the last century. However, many of us are moving away from a 3-stage life (learn, work, retire) and embarking on portfolio careers, side-hustles, pivots, and so on. These are developments that robots can’t help us with, because they present new challenges. Dan always works hard to keep informed about developments in market, policy, and legislation, so that we can understand and prepare the investment and contingency strategies necessary for making the best of life’s adventures, challenges and opportunities

Yes. As I said, the ongoing planning to deal with our modern, changing portfolio lives has been invaluable.

All Financial Adviser companies need to stop sending reams of paper documents through the post. This is driven by regulators, to a large extent. And by certain customer segments. But it is time to switch to PDFs, at least (these exist due to the act of printing). That is not specific to Dan.

Hah! I suppose he could have made the investments work even better, but I suspect that is outside even Dan's control! Overall, I cannot think of many things that Dan could have done better.

What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

Too be honest I had just turned a blind eye to my finances and hadn't ever considered using an adviser. It wasn't until a friend mentioned something at work that got me thinking about it.

How has Dan Dando helped you?

I was referred to Dan by a friend of mine after she told me about him sorting out her various pension pots. When I met him the first time we just chatted through all my concerns and worries and what I wanted from my money in the long term (i.e. when can I stop working!!!). He put together all the information on my current set up and made some recommendations to simplify everything and get my money working harder for me. I also had way too much in NS&I and a lot of that was used to invest. I got tax relief on a large chunk of this money, which was a nice surprise when I'd forgotten that it was due. I have asked my parents to sit down with him recently too, which was long overdue. They are now putting in place some plans to help with inheritance tax I think. All in all Dan is incredibly easy to deal with and I have no hesitation in recommending him to people.

Definitely. Because of my earnings I am severely restricted in terms of what I can pay into pensions and he helped me maximize my contributions before it was too late. The main this though is that I now actually review my finances (with him) and feel much better placed. I know I need to be doing more to achieve my goals but I feel confident I'll get there.

What could they have done better?

I'm not too sure he could've done much more. My only gripe is that the whole initial process kicked up a huge amount of paperwork and post which seemed excessive. This isn't his fault to be fair and it has gotten much better now everything is in one place.
