What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

I had used the services of another financial adviser and was very disappointed with the service and level of advice. I was, therefore, quite sceptical about IFAs and was cautious when engaging with a new one. Matthew Smith and his team at Buckingham Gate have proved to be an excellent choice and I am extremely satisfied with service I receive now. Moreover, Matthew and his team are extremely conscientious and completely trustworthy. I have recommended them to friends and relatives.

My wife and I needed to review completely our financial position approaching my retirement from full time work. This initially included inheritance tax planning, establishing trusts (and therefore new wills) and advice on pensions. My wife had several old pensions from previous employment as well as her own SIPP as a self-employed consultant. Later, we decided that we would also transfer the management of our investments to Matthew's team as well (before that I managed them myself).

Yes. We have just completed our latest annual review and, thanks to Matthew's advice, we are now in a good financial position to enjoy our retirement. We have made arrangements regarding inheritance to our "blended family" and ensured that we manage our finances in a tax efficient way.

What could they have done better?

Very little needed to be improved. Investment performance initially was steady rather than stunning and probably lacked some deep technical expertise. This was rectified by forming an arrangement with a professional investment house that now carries out the day to day management of clients' funds and performance is entirely adequate.

How has Matthew Smith helped you?

By providing very clear and informative presentations of the general principles involved in estate planning and by undertaking a detailed analysis of our current and projected financial situation and suggesting ways to better manage our finances. He then recommended the most appropriate structure of wills and trusts to meet our overall aims. He assisted with explaining some of the details of the relevant detailed documents that were prepared to put in place our wishes.

We still haven't seen and signed the final documents, but we have no reason to think that they will not completely meet out requirements.

What could they have done better?

Very little. We particularly liked the presentations on aspects of estate planning and the preparation of the financial projections and plan for us. The plan had to be revised a few times because there were a few issues, but this was during the Covid lockdown period when face to face meetings were not possible so communication was more difficult. When we were presented with the final draft documents for review, some aspects were quite complex and difficult to understand. It would have been helpful if we could have been given a simple explanation document to aid understanding. In practice, we had a relatively long discussion with Matthew when all matters were cleared up.

I had incomes from different sources and needed help and advice as how to manage and protect these incomes. I do not have a extensive portfolio but it needed to be looked after and Matthew has done me proud in this sense.

Acting on his advice I have set up a new will and trust fund to look after my future investments. I had a number of private pensions and after researching them came to the conclusion that many seemed to be underperforming. This outcome encouraged me to look for someone who would be able to give really good advice and help consolidate the different pensions.
