I had accrued a significant amount of money in investment over the years, and it needed an independent review to look at my overall saving and investment strategy, to provide me with a view to enable me to invest into the future for retirement.

He also reviewed my current pensions, and recommended that they should all be bought together in a self invested personal pension to allow it to be passed on to the children, which has proved to be sound advice.

Initially, my wife and I had sought advice on investing, building up my wife's pension, and life insurance. We looked at several advisers (via bank, building society, and independent) and met Roger via local networking.

What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

Approaching 55 with a mature pension I wanted to use to release some capital and start to draw the balance enabling me to work less than full time for a better work / life balance and more gradual retirement. With another pension and state pension in reserve I felt this pension could be sacrificed to this end. Since then I’ve been made redundant and the company pension became free to reinvest. Roger again understood and has invested it in a different scheme which way exceeds its earlier growth when with my ex employers scheme.

How has Roger Kuhlmann helped you?

Having already approached another advisor who essentially said “keep working and invest this pension in a scheme I’m a member of”. He hadn’t listened of course and the scheme didn’t stand up at all well to some googling (is that a verb now?) or appear to match in practice the claims being made by the advisor. I stumbled across Roger more or less by accident as his wife had a mutual interest in cycling and said the same things to him. He listened, talked through the options and implications and came up with a plan which seemed to meet my expectations and I chose to go ahead.

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

No, I’ve seen it significantly exceeded. I’d been clear that the pension was sacrificial to me if it achieved the outcome of being able to maintain my lifestyle while working less. In practice the capital has been maintained and I’ve had the lump sum, two years of the income I wanted and still have the flexibility to increase my take and see the capital reduce if I want to work even less before full retirement. Of course the static capital is reducing in real terms because of inflation but it’s still way above expectations. I know and can track all this through a very user friendly app.

What could they have done better?

I’ve genuinely tried to answer this but unless a free Tesla for a repeat customer is a reasonable expectation (Roger?) the serious answer is nothing!

I had savings in different savings products including NSI bonds and an ISA which I was was keeping and slowing building on for my future care. Then unexpectedly I had an inheritance that increased my potential savings considerably.

Roger was excellent in helping me focus on what I wanted and needed for now and the future, given my age and circumstances, and helped me understand my own approach to risk. He explained options with illustrations and the importance of spreading risk. Although Roger was clear on what he thought the best approach would be in terms of the allocation of funds overall he gave me a certain amount of freedom in deciding how to manage part of the portfolio.

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

Overall, I have had a realistic outcome, and a good one considering the exceptional market conditions we are experiencing. I was particularly pleased with the joint decision to move shares investments into Sustainable funds. I believe this is the right move given changes in current wider social, economic and environmental factors.

What could they have done better?

This is my first experience of using the services of a financial adviser so I have nothing to compare it with but I have not been disappointed and can think of nothing that could have been done better, especially now that Roger has an office in Settle.

How has Roger Kuhlmann helped you?

When I first met Roger I was impressed by his attentiveness and that he did not try to sell himself to me. He listened to what I had to say and then asked what it was that I wanted to achieve. He challenged my thoughts offering a number of scenarios, some of which I had not previously considered. He empathised with me and eventually we agreed a plan for my pensions and investments. We lost contact, merely due to commercial reasons but I'm happy to say that we have recently been reunited. The bed rock of his original proposal still stands but once we we reconnected it was obvious that some adjustments had to be enacted. His ability to interpret the clients requirements and to enable these to be converted, demonstrates the depth of his personel knowledge. He is first class; he considers his customers needs above those of his own and conducts regular reviews of his clients portfolio to ensure their interest are upheld which resonates with me.

The first thing that impressed me about Roger was that he recommended that I took my full pension entitlement and not the standard 25% tax free lump sum. This was the right decision for me but meant that he received no fee at all. He genuinely wants to do the best he can for his client. I have always found that Roger provides very sound financial advice in a professional, honest and diligent manner. Roger is a great guy and I would not hesitate in recommending him as a financial adviser.

As I approached retirement I knew arranging my pension wasn't going to be simple, I had a company pension, a frozen pension from a previous employer, FSAVC and was investing in peer to peer lending. The predicted pensions didn't seem very good and the annuity offered by the insurance company handling the FSAVC was pathetic. I did some research on the web and realised I could get better deals by shopping around and realised I should use a financial advisor to sort things out. Roger's advice was invaluable, he didn't even blink when I presented him with a briefcase full of paperwork about the various pensions and insurance policies I had. He spent a lot of time going through the various schemes I was involved in, explaining my options. Roger obtained a better pension for me than I could have done on my own, and his fees were more than covered by the extra pension he gained for me. I would certainly recommend Roger to anyone approaching retirement or seeking financial advice.
