Hi Gary Thank you for your feedback, which was tough to read under the unusual circumstances. I'm sorry I was unable to speak with you personally. I was unwell and off work on the date of your enquiry, So I passed it on to my son Paul who has 20 years of experience and is fully capable and qualified. MLP has elected not to deal with final salary pension transfers as stated on our service page. Like Paul explained to you many financial advisers have done the same. To transact a DB transfer would be going against our regulatory permissions. Having listened to the recorded telephone call with Paul, he did explain this to you and did give you good constructive general advice. This would have helped you take the next steps in finding what you are looking for. Best wishes, Paolo

We went through a risk questionnaire to establish my attitude to risk and investments. He phoned on a few days giving me time to digest and ask questions until I completely understood the options. I wanted security and an income from the money.

Yes absolutely. The lump sum has already grown substantially in a few short months. This is a better result than I’d hoped for actually. I haven’t started dreaming an income yet as we agreed to leave it a year to build up the capital but I have a lot of confidence that Paolo will keep me informed and do the best he can for me and the future.
What could they have done better?
I can’t think of anything. Paolo has kept in touch at intervals since I first invested A smaller amount with him some years ago. I had to withdraw that money fairly quickly, but still made a profit so Paolo was the first person I contacted when I had further funds.

After my husband died, I found myself in a predicament. I urgently needed to raise a substantial amount of money in order to be able to remain living in my marital home which had been partially willed to another family member. The option was due to expire in a few months' time when I either had to move house which was a very daunting prospect at my advanced age, or I would risk losing my house and my inheritance under the terms of his Will. I needed help to know how best to achieve this. It was a very worrying time for me.
How has Paolo Standerwick helped you?
Paolo Standerwick looked at the possibility of raising the necessary funds by means of an Equity Release mortgage. I had previously looked into this option but it had seemed a complicated process, very expensive and with many restrictions. However, when I sought Paolo's help, I went along with my son for an initial meeting with him and he spent time explaining how this could work for me. We eventually found a suitable mortgage at a very reasonable rate of interest. He appointed a member of his staff to guide me through the whole process. This was extremely helpful. She kept in touch with me every step of the way, liaising with my solicitor and the mortgage company solicitors as necessary. This took off the anxiety and stress I felt of achieving the funds I needed within the time frame allowed. Paolo also telephoned me personally to reassure me me that all would be well. I really appreciated his approach and the time he gave to support me throughout the process.
Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?
I very recently achieved completion on my house within just a few weeks of the time allowed, which was a great relief. It has been a long and tortuous legal process. My solicitor assured me that I had achieved a very good deal financially. I could not thank Paulo and his staff enough for all their help and guidance through a very difficult time. Their very reasonable fee was tremendously good value for money. I would have no hesitation in recommending Paulo Standerwick to others.

What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?
I needed to transfer my pension as it only allowed my taking an annuity to a more flexible vehicle that would allow drawdown. This was under unusual circumstances as it is likely that either my funds will only be invested for a limited time, or my heirs will benefit.
How has Paolo Standerwick helped you?
I needed specific advice on my pension plan and how to set it up to a full flexi-access drawdown. Having had an initial discussion, I was happy at that stage to consider MLP's services. When I finally decided to proceed, I spoke to Paolo the director of MLP who explained the full procedures that lay ahead. There was absolutely no pressure at any time, all my questions were answered in full and to my satisfaction. Also, Paolo has a good sense of humour, which helps when dealing with fairly difficult subjects. I believe that my pension investments are in very good hands, Paolo is registered with the FCA and, from what I was able to glean, has a lot of experience in advising about finance in general. His associate Paul helped with preparing what could be done for me in the first place. Both were very patient in explaining details to me that I, as a lay person, did not understand. Paulo will be looking after my finances in the longer term and I very much look forward to be working with him. I would definitely refer a friend to him. I highly recommend MLP advisers who also have a good back up team.

In relation to the transfer I am delighted. I do not yet know how my fund will perform, as the transfer happened very recently. As a vehicle it seems perfect for my needs and markets are volatile.

Found Paolo via the pensions advisory service, he was thoughtful and to the point, his advice was clear and concise, I was always made fully aware of my position, to put it simply he got the job done, he says what he means and means what he says which I find very refreshing in today’s world, and as a result had no hesitation in recommended him to a friend.

I made an enquiry for pension advice to the government MAS service who sent me a list of approximately 60 IFAs to make contact with for my requirements. I narrowed this down to 5 of which MLP Wealth were one of those contacted. Paolo responded promptly by email and with a follow up telephone conversation. During this conversation Paolo gave me plenty of information for me to be able to take it a stage further. His explanation was comprehensive and I was able to understand easily on such a complex subject. Paolo gave me unbiased information for me to take the enquiry to the next stage. At all times during the transaction I was kept informed and Paolo also gave me additional advice in relation to a mortgage requirement which would help me achieve the best results for me and my wife. I am very happy that I chose MLP to give me the guidance and advice I needed. I would highly recommend Paolo and his team for any financial advice and financial planning.

I was recommended to Paolo and his team by my husband who originally was in banking. I had a deferred defined benefit pension scheme which I hadn't really taken much notice of from years ago with my previous employer. Having recently had a health scare, I decided that I would rather have my money now than the promise of a guaranteed pension. I want to enjoy my money whilst I am fit and relatively young. Paolo did a good job with the assistance of his back up support team. I wanted access to all of my tax free cash sum with the flexibility of deciding what to do later with the balance of my pension scheme. Paolo made it very clear to me my options and I was never under any pressure to go ahead. So far I have been pleased with my results just as my husband is with his results too. The process was clear and easy although the trustees did take rather a long time. MLP Wealth have a good set up with a very personal service.

I was having real difficulty accessing my pension fund.
How has Paolo Standerwick helped you?
I was introduced and highly recommended to Paolo through a very long standing friend who had his pension dealt with by himself personally. For many years I had tried to access and shift my pension fund to an accessible scheme, the trustees were extremely difficult to deal with as quite often the phones were not answered and paperwork wasn't returned either. When I had the opportunity to meet Paolo with my husband he gave me the confidence that he would handle this for me and place my funds into an accessible scheme to meet my requirements. The process did take quite some months but eventually we got there. MLP's offices were very persistent in making sure all admin was chased and the ceding scheme administrators were chased regularly. Eventually the scheme was transferred and I was able to access my tax free cash sum. It is now fully invested and from what I have seen so far I am very happy with the results. Both my husband and I will consider investing more money in the future as and when required.

How has Paolo Standerwick helped you?
My original adviser was Leon Matossian who retired to Cyprus a few years ago now. I have been involved with Paolo and MLP Wealth for 15 years or more. Paolo has looked after my pensions and investments. I am retired and for the last few years my income stream from all my investments are so tax efficient that I pay very little and some years no tax at all. I was recently referred to Paolo at MLP Wealth through my mortgage adviser. I was after advice and guidance on transferring my Defined Benefit pension scheme. I left the BBC in 1983 and joined the Post Production Industry in London when my career and wage increases started to happen. Paolo had an office just down the road from me. We met up one evening as the say "the rest is history".

My wife and I have probably been been one of Paolo's longest serving clients. He helped me over the years with family protection, mortgages and in the latter years my pension scheme. I joined and I have worked with Paolo and the rest of the MLP team myself for those 15 years as a mortgage, equity release and long term care specialist. I'm nearly sixty now and have been a client of Paolo's since I was 25! Initially, I contacted him because I wanted some kind of long term plan in place, whereby a little was put away each month that would grow over the years.

The relationship has continued over the last 35 years! In the early days, as well as advising me generally, he helped me buy my first property and since, has steered me towards making some sound investments. I then decided I wanted to understand my options with a preserved pension that I had from previous employment. I needed some cash to pay off some short term debts. He produced a detailed report, as well as fully explaining the difference between my old Canon DB pension scheme with the alternative such as a Drawdown. I met Paolo when he came to do a pension presentation at a firm I used to work for. I have personally used MLP Wealth for the last 15 years or so and I have been extremely happy with the results of my pension returns. A few year back Paolo also organised a life and critical illness policy for me. Having paid off my mortgage earlier than expected I asked him if I needed to keep this policy on. He explained to me that it was my decision and that in the event of a critical illness if the policy was not longer in place then of course the benefits of the scheme would no longer exist. I decided to keep the policy on. Unfortunately I did end up falling ill and claiming on the policy at a later date. I am glad Paolo explained my options clearly and ion the end I know I made the right decisions. Paolo and his team are easy to get through to and always available to talk to as well. I have know Paolo for a long time and had cause to contact Paolo regarding my husband's life assurance.
How has Paolo Standerwick helped you?
I have know Paolo for around 30 years. Our children went to the same school. He originally dealt with my husband Rick who took out an additional life assurance policy (subsequently lapsed) and a top up for his pension. The advice Rick was given was second to none and he was very happy with what Paolo had recommended. Having moved far away from Paolo we lost touch for a bit. Rick didn't want to bother Paolo so one day a few years ago Rick called the pension provider directly as he wanted access to his pension fund. The provider had only offered him a tax free cash option and sold him an annuity. Unfortunately Rick died a couple of years ago and I asked Paolo to check to see what Rick had purchased from them. He found out that having gone directly with them they had only offered him the annuity option with a very small widows benefit e.g. approx. £40 per month with a 5 year guarantee. Paolo said that if he had opted for a Drawdown (which provider had not offered him), I would have had a cash sum in the region of £30,000 plus. This would have been more useful. The moral in the testimonial is that going directly to providers doesn't save you money, in fact is actually cost you money with a very limited choices available. I am now left short and I certainly would rather had the lump sum than a measly £40 per month for another 2.5 years. This has made me realise the value of real good advice is not worth ignoring if you use the right adviser. My advice is not to deal directly with companies but to always consider a trustworthy IFA. Paolo and MLP Wealth has also been invaluable with help since I lost my husband Rick.

This is more of a criticism of the regualtions that happer IFA's giving their best advice. I am ex-CIty and hence financially experienced. I found some of the FSA required questions and warnings that Paolo had to go through naive. Indeed even now Paolo seems to be required to give advice that is formulaic when he and I know that the risks I wish to take are appropriate for my circumstances. Generally the FSA seems to think everybody has small pension pots and that they are all of their long term savings. Whereas for HNW's their pension is just a tax efficient limb of a much wider investment programme.

He has consolidated some pension plans from previous employers into a better scheme for future guaranteed income through my retirement. Paolo has also managed a Multi ISA which through strategic movement of funds has shown constant growth throughout the uncertain financial climate of the last 5 years.
Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?
Obviously some products are more subject to the volatile nature of the stock market than others but as I approached retirement age Paolo has guided me towards safer investments that, whilst not achieving meteoric growth, have not nose-dived and have benefited me with a more steady growth in value.
What could they have done better?
I'm not sure. I'm not familiar with what other Financial Advisers offer as I've always been satisfied with the service and advice I've received from MLP.

We had fairly large credit card debts and were interested in using the new pensions regulations to free up tax free cash from our pensions which allowed us to negotiate considerable savings by clearing these debts earlier than we could otherwise have afforded to do. This has improved our cash flow and allows us to draw less income from our companies and reduce our exposure to higher rate income tax. We also have the benefit of being able to invest surplus fund in our pensions.

ADVISE!!! He looks at the big picture and does everything to suite your own financial requirements. Put it this way. I first met Paolo in the 1980's. I had recently moved to London and was on a successful and highly piad career path. In 2003 I was made redundant. Because of Paolo's excellent advice over the years I am mortgage free and own a house worth approximately £600K. As advised in 2005 I used my pension fund to create a SIPP and bought a commercial property. Just had a review to draw my tax free sum and the property value has increased in value by over £100K. I am semi retired, financially secure and sleep a night. And what's more I live 200 yards from the sea!! Thank you Paolo and I look forward to your advise when the new pension alternatives come into force next month.

After receiving bad advice from another company, I was very sceptical and worried. It was very refreshing to have some honest advice and to be educated on how my money would be working for me, rather than just leaving confused with a pile of paperwork. Paolo and MLP took care of everything, explained every option, broke down the policies, took care of all the paperwork and even held a meeting with me outside of working hours. Well, it's nice to be able to understand what I'm being told. It's not exactly the easiest subject to get your head around, and the outcome of not understanding is loss of your money, so it's important to understand what you're being told. Pension and annuities are important namely because I will need that money in retirement, and it takes confidence to trust anyone these days after everything that has happened to the markets in the last few years. But the fact of the matter is, I do think I understand what I was told, and if I had any questions I just picked Paolo's brain. Simple.
What could they have done better?
I guess, nobody really wants to focus on the risks, but it is fact that when you are trying to grow your money, this means taking risks. I would like to have a bit more knowledge of what taking a risk means. So it would be a bit more helpful to have a little bit more emphasis on what a risk might mean, why and if I can do anything to make that risk less. Ideally I want my money to grow, grow, grow, but I don't want to take any risk. I now know that that is just not possible.
