What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

I am about to retire from a company pension scheme which although very good did not offer all the benefits that I was looking for? Helen and her company were able to fill the gaps in that were missing in my aspirations for a more flexible pension scheme/fund investment.

How has Helen Blackburn helped you?

Almost immediately both my wife and I were taken by Helen's straightforward approach to Financial Advice and her ability to keep things very simple. She also has an uncanny ability to second guess what we were trying to achieve as well from our investments. I would suspect that this ability comes from her wealth of experience in dealing with other "non-financially" savvy people just like me?.

The outcome is still very much ongoing but from my dealings so far with Helen I really don't foresee any pitfalls.

What could they have done better?

Im still not fully confident whether I am getting "the best price" from a Financial Adviser. For someone like me who is completely new to the World of Financial Investments it would perhaps have been nice to see a "league table" perhaps issued by someone like the FCA on how different Financial Advisers vary cost wise? Having said all that the excellent service and advise I have had so far from Helen and her team probably negates any concerns. You get what you pay for in life?

Changes to pension provisions at work were not in my favour so I decided to look at alternative solutions for retirement. I spent a lot of time researching and speaking to a number of providers and Oaklands came top for a number of reasons.

When I spoke to Helen she listened to what my current position was and understood my reason for wanting to seek alternative pension provision. I explained where I would like to be at retirement and she explained what options were available in a way that was easy to understand, the most important thing was she listened to what I wanted.

What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

We were looking at options to enable early retirement without being heavily penalised by the pension reduction that would be imposed by my employers DB scheme. We were also interested in the opportunity to take control of our pension fund for the benefit of ourselves and in due course our children.

Helen listened carefully to our ideas and thoughts and examined our situation before explaining the options and possibilities available to use. It would be good if every couple of months there was some sort of news letter or info email keeping clients abreast of any company news and their thoughts around significant market/fund performance changes etc as, after the communication intensity around getting everything up and running it can feel a bit 'quiet'.

I got to my early forties and realised I needed expert advice to ensure I had the right financial plan in place to support my family through education and aim for a comfortable and secure retirement for myself and my husband. It was also triggered by some tax planning issues at the time as my domicile status changed.

I was completely disatisfied with the investment provider at the time and in particular the lack of personal service they provided and the lack of communication and involvement with myself as Deputy in my brother's affairs.

How has Helen Blackburn helped you?

Helen was very clued up on the way forward with the approach needed in relations of the protocol that needed to be followed with a potential client that whose financial affairs are governed by the Court of Protection. She did not put me under any pressure but gave a confident, informative and compassionate presentation and also left the door open to reflect on her advice and to ask any questions that might arise after the meeting, Helen was very self assured without being arrogant about her company and how they could help to ensure my brither's investments would be well placed.
