What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

My partner and I wanted to understand our pension situation to financially plan as due to retire in around 9 years. Have a mix of various defined benefit and defined contribution work pensions plus some private and recent inheritance.

How has Phil McGuire helped you?

Phil came to see us several times, initially to gather all the relevant information and review our needs and plans plus appetite for risk. He kept in regular contact as we worked through the complex information and provided clear guidance and supporting details to enable us to come to decisions with which we are comfortable. He's been very thorough and clear, advising us of both positives and negatives, and provided a detailed report of our current situation and possible future outcomes. Having made our decisions, he took care of all the related administration to set things up and we now have an active retirement accounts and investments with which we are happy.

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

Yes in terms of having a clearer view of our situation and a plan going forward. It's only been a few weeks since everything was put in place so too early to tell with respect to the outcome. However, we are happy that we have a much better understanding of our situation and ongoing guidance in making the best of what we have.

Our previous pension advisor was moving onto a new company which was not a good fit for us so we took the time to look around for a new advisor. We had had previous advice from Phil a number of years ago so it was easy to pick up our relationship again and find out more about the company he now works for. Which turned out to be a much better fit for us.

Phil took a lot of time to get to know us again and what our needs for our pensions and investments are for this season in our lives. He regularly checked in with us over the course of the move and as very patient with me personally when my health issues slowed things up.

We had several investments which had become difficult to manage, more or less orphaned, after the company providing financial advice had ceased to operate. The investments went through several hands before Phil's company took over.

Phil reviewed the investments in considerable detail and made suggestions to effectively manage the various investments, reduce costs of management and bring the investments more in line with our desired Risk Category. In addition, he reviewed investments to be able to take advantage of Capital Gains Carry Over losses and consolidate under single management.

Until Covid19, I was satisfied that the investment strategy was progressing as hoped. Once the dust has settled on Covid19, we shall see how well the investments have tolerated the turmoil.
