My employer introduced financial coaching as a staff benefit

How has Helen Rutherford helped you?

Helen encouraged me to create a full household budget to understand our income, spending and saving. And she helped me to answer questions I had about retirement income and to make changes to my saving habits to meet my future goals.

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

Yes, I now fully understand our predicted retirement income and have been able to make the changes required to meet some of the personal goals I have, such as being able to retire at 60. Helen also got me to create a budget for the first time in my life, and has encouraged changes to my spending and saving habits which have been revolutionary for me.

What could they have done better?

I'm not sure she could have done anything better.

While I am fairly organised regarding my finances Helen given me a better understanding of pensions and has discussed ways in which I can maximise pension contributions, Helen has also helped me to set goals and thereby help me to focus on budgeting my income . We have also discussed Wills so I find it less daunting / overwhelming

The session was very much targetted as a Sales pitch for the ongoing sessions, rather than providing any evidence of knowledge of and ideas of opportunities to best manage existing funds and plan for future goals. Examples of how tools that were used would benefit my situation were not available, as the case study examples dealt with people / couples that were a fraction of my age and very much at the beginning of their investment journey, rather than nearer the end of this.

Using long term forecasting, my partner and I were able to alter pension and ISA contributions in line with specific life goals, taking in to consideration tax and cash buffers. We are also putting in place a Will and various forms of protection, which we would not of considered without Helen's guidance.

I really wanted to think about about my long term financial planning rather than just focusing on short term goals. I wanted to understand when I can reasonably retire and I wanted to understand what steps I need to take to make this possible.

How has Helen Rutherford helped you?

Helen has provided the support I needed to start making long term financial plans. I have always been nervous of planning, worried that I would never be able to retire! Helen has helped me to identify and set some realistic and achievable goals and I feel a lot less worried now. Helen is very knowledgeable and her style is relaxed and encouraging.

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

I have only had 3 sessions and already have some plans in place. There are more suggestions that Helen has made which we will focus on in our future sessions.

Yes - I was hoping for progress and reassurance. Helen has helped us make a step change with both.

What could they have done better?

Complete clarity on whether any commission is earned with suggestions/ideas. Maybe some kind of gamification around actions progress e.g. “streaks” (more a suggestion for the platform rather than Helen).

I was starting to look to get on the property ladder and wanted someone who I could discuss this with, as I'm doing it on my own.

How has Helen Rutherford helped you?

I wanted to know how buying a house would impact my long term finances and plans, what I might have to look out for, where I could save money or be more money conscious. Helen has helped me with this through the online financial planning tool, budget tracking, advice on how it would be more financially beneficial if I increased my pension contributions vs continuing to pay in a LISA, after having withdrawn the deposit. She's also pointed me to premium bonds and suggested other tax free options, such as rent a room.

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

It's been very helpful to be aware of all the financial products out there, where there are tax free savings, tracking my finances more and just being more conscious of what I can do with my money and do it better.

I understand that you would like some more transparency on the cost of the service: the cost to you as an employee of a company which offers Octopus Money Coach Financial Coaching as a benefit, is £249.00. However, because you pay for the benefit via salary sacrifice, you save tax and National Insurance on this cost. The result is deducted from your salary. As a self-employed Financial Coach, I receive £124.50 of the total amount for the coaching service which I provide over the year's subscription. Helen was not prepared for our session, I had put in lots of time and effort to fill in the pre-meeting questionnaire and this was not looked at before the meeting. Corporate benefit and trying to improve financial awareness and wellbeing.

How has Helen Rutherford helped you?

Helen helped me calculate the development of my pension plan and gave me advice on how to improve my credit score and optimise taxation. We also discussed my monthly budget.

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

Unfortunately, the advice often doesn't apply to expats and important questions for foreigners are out of scope. I'm not saving up for any small to medium sized purchases or vacation but the advice seems to be tailored to people wanting to do that.

What could they have done better?

Some of the recommendations are biased and contain a conflict of interests (pointing to specific partner funds).

Recent changes in my personal circumstances crystallised a growing awareness of some significant gaps in my financial planning, and prompted me to and seek help with reviewing my finances and planning for the future.

How has Helen Rutherford helped you?

Helen fulfilled this role admirably, not only helping me in reviewing my finances, but in assessing also how these squared with my overall life goals and ultimately coming up with a plan that was tailored to my specific needs and aspirations. In this she proved to be a great listener, easy to talk to about all of my ideas (even the wilder ones!) and offering practical solutions to all the challenges that I presented her with. The plan she presented me with at our last meeting was clearly and comprehensively explained to me, so that I was then able to 'play' with it and explore various different outcomes.

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

My sessions with Helen, and the plan she presented me with, gave me a much clearer picture of my finances than I had had previously and left me feeling far more in control. After having been through quite a tough period financially and in other aspects of my life, I was buoyed up by our session and now feel much more optimistic about about achieving my goals.

What could they have done better?

Honestly I could not fault Helen's service. She was exactly what I needed at this point in my life, having an empathetic ear, keen attention to detail and offering practical solutions to challenging problems. I only wish I had spoken to her sooner!

It was a good conversation, I sensed that Helen was a little nervous and that she may have been reading from a crib sheet. The Wifi was just ok. I'd attended several sessions within Octopus with Adam explaining what OMC is and does, I was expecting some actual advice, this meeting felt like a cold call sales call, that I then needed to sign up for to get any useful advice - I feel this wasn't made clear during the comms prior to this meeting with Helen.

The internet connection was a bit shaky so hearing was a small challenge. I had hoped that Hatch were aware of the benefits that Zellis colleagues receive i.e. types of pensions etc. But the overall feedback was that Hatch wasn't able to support me due to the size of the investments I already have.

If you need any help with finding a mortgage then we have a team of advisors we refer our HATCH clients to for advice on the whole of the mortgage market, commission free. Such advice could help speed up the mortgage approval when you find somewhere you like: a prompt offer is needed at the moment because of the Stamp Duty Land Tax reduction only being available until 31st March 2021. What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for a financial coach?

My partner and I are currently saving to buy our first property, whilst also planning our finances over the next few years when we hope to start a family. With a lot of different outgoings to consider we felt it would be useful to have some professional coaching in helping us to prioritise and look at how we could best save for our future.

How has Helen Rutherford helped you?

Helen was really helpful in taking us through the steps for assessing our current outgoings and looking at where we could make savings; as well as entering this into Hatch’s forecasting model that showed us how different approaches to saving would look over the next five years but also much further in the future. Helen was friendly, approachable and very clear in the way she explains financial matters.

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

Yes, we’re currently house hunting and have managed to save enough of a deposit now to buy our first home.
