What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

I was worried about my pension and the fact that I didn't know how much I would get when and whether it was sufficient. Jonathan was highly recommended by a couple of trusted colleagues.

Jonathan helped me understand what information I would need for the review, was very tolerant when it took me longer than it should to do this, asked a series of questions that prompted me to consider what I needed from the review, then synthesised all the information in a format that addressed my queries. Most importantly he gave me direct recommendations on how to proceed that were thoughtful and aligned with my circumstances. I should also add that there was a comprehensive report that I will be referring to in future.

In some respects I got more than I thought I would get. I not only have the figures to make informed choices going forward, plus Jonathan's recommendations, I feel really relieved to have done the analysis and have a much clearer idea of what my future post retirement will look like. I also have the reassurance that if my circumstances change or I have questions in future, I know exactly where to go to address them.

What could they have done better?

I'm not sure that I can think of anything. The process wasn't cheap...but I do think that it was good value for money and I wouldn't be at all surprised if I end up saving more than the cost of the pensions advice, given some of the sound recommendations that he made. I would do it all again in a heartbeat given the sense of relief that I feel anyway.

I was retiring and had two occupational (defined benefit) pensions in prospect along with a Defined contribution one. Knowing that I had an option to take some of this as cash I felt I needed good advice to help maximise our retirement income in a safe and structured manner.

Jonathan spent a lot of time talking to my wife and I to fully understand our hopes and aspirations for our retirement. He married this information with knowledge of our pensions status and presented a number of options (and recommendations) for how to proceed. Since the initial investment, we have had an annual review (conducted face to face) and received other guidance by email. The service has always been prompt and comprehensive.

The investment strategy had to consider that workplace pensions and investment, SIPP’s and ISA’s spread over multiple platforms (including some foreign investments). In addition, the report outlined a proposed drawdown strategy for the pension and ISA investments to provide a tax-efficient income, taking into account the proposed strategy for the foreign investments as formulated with his input.

What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

My wife and I intended to retire early and we wanted to be sure that we would have sufficient retirement income, and know the most tax efficient ways of drawing our array of pensions. What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

I reached the age of 60 and thought I could cover the aspect of cashing in my two pensions which I had contributed to. However, I had not taken into account, that I was also entitled to, two final salary pension schemes, and the method of calculating my entitlement took me very close to the maximum pension entitlement of £1million, all monies in excess of £1million, I would have to pay a higher tax rate. Although this was a nice problem to have, I had no idea how to deal with it.

He firstly re-assurred me, that I was in a good position and that my fears were unfounded and he explained all options available to me, in easy to understand language, and, that what I initially considered a problem was in fact extremely good news and could be resolved in a most beneficial way.
