What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

I had three separate pension that I wanted advice on.

How has Graham Thompson helped you?

As some of my pensions were under performing Graham advised on the benefit of consolidating all three pensions into one. He carried out a personal survey on my attitude to risk, advised on my options, and sorted out all the relevant paperwork in a timely manner. I had stipulated that I was possibly looking at the option of Drawdown when it came to taking my pension, and so would like him to look at companies that would facilitate this. He came back with a choice of reputable companies, explaining everything as we went along. I was very happy with his advice on which particular provider was the right one for me moving forward. Over the course of the next few years we were in regular contact, including annual reviews on my aversion to risk and how my pension pot was performing.

When I was approaching 60 I knew that I did not have the expertise to deal with my pensions which held a fairly substantial amount of money. I needed expert advice. I researched the internet and Graham was highly regarded by his clients.

Not yet. During the current pandemic, when there is no certainty in the world we wouldn't have expected anything better. We're sure that, given time our investments will give us a respectable return.

Our Financial Adviser, Graham could not have done anymore than he has. Of course the only way to be sure such a statement has any real credibility is to have his work independently audited. But when his track record is what it is we have no doubt whatsoever that Graham has handled our investments honestly and with an integrity that leaves us in no doubt that our trust in him is something that Graham himself has earned.

What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

I was needing an evaluation of my financial status regarding pension and ways to improve what capital I have already collected. I am a short while away from retirement.

How has Graham Thompson helped you?

He collected information on my current pensions schemes, evaluated the performance and offered a new managed plan that reduced the yearly cost. Also he pointed out that my company pension was underperforming by an incredible 20%, this had to be resolved quickly. We moved all my individual pensions to a new higher performance and lower cost pension. this would offset some of the poor performing returns. He also helped with how to do an extra pension contribution and what was needed to be done to allow minimum cost overall.

Yes, he helped my worry over what to do, the cost of the managed portfolio is great and I feel confident that I will achieve my retirement requirements.

What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

Having recently been made redundant I made the decision to sort out my pensions, and try and formulate a plan for the future. I searched the internet on various websites for a reputable IFA in my area. Grahams name appeared, and he was also based in my local area. After reading the reviews his customers had posted I decided to take the plunge and give him a call.

How has Graham Thompson helped you?

Graham was, and still is very helpful. We discussed what my aspirations for the future are, and after reviewing my pensions and talking about the numerous options available to me, what the best way forward would be. The advice he gave me on my pensions will save me money in running costs and should hopefully give me a greater return. Everything has been explained to me throughout the whole process, and I feel I am now more understanding of how and what I am able to expect when I retire. We were wanting to review our pension provision, and having gained a number of different pensions over the years we were wanting to see whether any would be better transferred or combined.

How has Graham Thompson helped you?

Graham carried out a thorough review of all of our pensions, and provided full reports on potential ways forward for each of us. He went through in detail what each would mean, and the full costs involved, and risk levels.

Yes, the reports enabled us to both make a decision on the best way forward for each of our pension provisions.

I needed to review my pensions situation with a view to retiring. I had met a Pensionswise advisor who gave me some initial but broad-brush advice.

How has Graham Thompson helped you?

First. Graham was very quick to respond to my request for advice. Along the way, Graham was most diligent in investigating my circumstances in order to identify best courses of action. I was entirely confident that I would be taking well-informed decisions about my financial position.

Entirely. Graham pulled together a large amount of information and produced succinct, well-researched reports which he then used during several face-to-face meetings. I was particularly pleased at the quality-assurance aspect of the advice I was given. Graham and his team work together to make sure that any regulatory issues are identified and brings an additional eye to all the information he provides. This is very reassuring where there is such a minefield in the pensions business.

Graham was generally very good, especially in the clarity of his written reports, but I have to say at times during verbal discussions I was on the border of loosing track as new terminology came rather rapidly at times. I guess, its sometimes difficult when you know your subject well, but perhaps a common language summary at the end might help?

We needed to review all our finances as we had many different products held with several providers and felt we were not getting the best deal from any of them. We were also planning to send both children to private school & needed to work out how to fund this.

How has Graham Thompson helped you?

Graham was absolutely wonderful, he quickly understood our position and did a huge amount of background work working out what the best solution was. We immediately felt full trust in his judgement and genuinely felt he had our very best interests at heart, it was as if it was his own funds he was working with and he was very patient in explaining every step & making sure we fully understood his rationale and agreed with his solutions.

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

Over & above all our expectations, Graham was always very measured in his anticipated outcomes and would give us different scenarios of how our portfolio might perform depending on world & local financial conditions. Our portfolio is generating much more income than we imagined possible in the current market. We are now 100% tax efficient and both of our pensions are converted to SIPP's which is much better for us and will provide for our future.

We were looking for ways and advice in investing lump sums to give income for our retirement.

How has Graham Thompson helped you?

Words can be wasted here. The only things that matter are trust and ones basic instinct of bullshit detection. Graham exudes trustworthiness, his knowledge of his subject appears solid. He does does pressurise or become overbearing in any way. There's nothing wrong with my bullshit detectors: Graham does not bullshit. He gives time - he explains, he gives more time - he waits for you to come to your queries in your own time. He listens and he explains.

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

We're satisfied with the work that Graham has done. We're into long term investments that are fairly safe. Graham has done much to direct us into areas that will keep us as safe as possible. He has not promised us the earth, he has gone top great lengths to keep us within our comfort zone and it is too soon yet to see anything more than slightly promising growth.

What could Graham have done better? With no one to compare him with that's hard to answer. Gut feeling says that we've got a good man here.

Graham presented me with several clearly set out alternatives that met my requirements, while indicating which he thought would be the most appropriate and simplest way of meeting my objectives and needs. He is easy to talk to and responds promptly and clearly to questions.

We have completed much of the plan that we agreed regarding my pensions. I have yet to draw down a pension from the new arrangement, but what we have done seems sensible and practical. Time will tell, but the arrangement can be changed to suit changing circumstances. My dad died last summer & it was a nightmare sorting his finances out on behalf of my mum. This obviously prompted me to get my affairs updated and in order - so that my wife wouldn't have to go through something similar.

How has Graham Thompson helped you?

Whilst I had a pension & life cover portfolio in place it wasn't really being managed. He has carried out a thorough "helath check" on this & adjusted where he felt necessary & also left alone policies that were working OK (ie didn't try to re-invent the wheel for the sake of it). He also looked at future possible alterations if when I inherit other monies. The most important thing that he has left me is peace of mind. I am now happy that my funds are in the best place at present & that there is going to be a continual annual review & update carried out.

Early days yet - but as I have mentioned above peace of mind is key to me. Knowing that it is now being looked after helps me get on with the "day to day". I could not have done it on my own. Previous pension was fairly poor with low returns and high charges. I received a call from one of Grahams colleagues offering to review my pension.

How has Graham Thompson helped you?

Dealing with things like pensions are not my strongest point, Graham helped explain things to me in a more basic fashion that allowed me to understand what it was we were aiming for. Graham ran some questionnaires so we could see were I wanted to be come retirement age and also how much of a risk I was willing to take. This allowed Graham to identify the most suitable portfolio for my needs.

Early days yet, but we've kept our monthly contributions the same for the first year which should give a guide as to how well it has performed in comparison to my previous pension.

What could they have done better?

I'm always happy to offer constructive suggestions however, I don't believe in this case that I have any. Graham is a nice friendly guy who is not pushy in any way and is happy to explain things in layman terms should you struggle to understand the slightly more complicated things.

I lost my job under wholly unexpected circumstances, I was at an age and a stage in my working life when retirement was on the nearer horizon anyway but I needed to completely rethink my situation. Once you face the reality of tapping into your resources that you've earned over a working life you realise its not that straightforward.

How has Graham Thompson helped you?

Graham enabled me to take much more into account than I had been doing. Although I had a broadly sound plan he was able to show me how that would work out in the future. He then showed me alternative models and forecasts for comparison. He took my needs and desires fully into account but ensured I could balance those with a longer term strategy for financial security, something I wasn't big on when I first contacted him. He explained everything every step of the way. One of the most important benefits I get from working with him is a sense of confidence as I move forward with my retirement planning. He is very experienced and calmly assuring and he allows you to test out potential plans and ideas which he'll then put to the test using sophisticated modelling software. All the while he was looking out for a plan that would suit me.

Graham is extremely knowledgeable about current regulations and forthcoming changes in Pension regulations. He is able to discuss these simply and clearly and does not try and confuse you with over technical terminology which made choosing the right pension product easier. With myself and my wife both working full time Graham has been very obliging and flexible in offering evening appointments. He has handled my pension transfer in an efficient and seem-free manner, which again with a demanding full time position I value.
