Prior to recent global events, my portfolio 12 months ago was reflecting a reasonable rate of growth. Due to market turbulance in 2022, the return on my investment has unfortunately reversed which would therefore not be the outcome I was hoping for after 5 years. I am however optimistic that growth will return once global events have improved and markets become more stable.

Bearing in mind the global nature of events which have affected the market I'm not sure anything could have been done to mitigate the adverse impact on the current portfolio. However, I think the portfolio might benefit from expanding the number of funds and providers to give additional diversity and perhaps include some actively managed funds within the risk category appropriate to the portfolio style, albeit these might attract additional charges.

After my father's death in June 2014 a discretionary Will Trust was created to provide an income for my stepmother during her lifetime. As Trustees, my sisters and I needed sound financial advice on the best way of achieving this objective whilst maintaining the value of the capital invested.

After establishing our attitude to risk, James arranged for the Trust capital to be invested in a suitable portfolio platform providing an income yield together with the potential for capital growth over the longer term. Focused Financial portfolios have significantly lower ongoing costs than the average "actively managed portfolio" in the UK, and allow James to keep an eye on the Trust investments and carry out annual reviews and periodic rebalancing of the portfolio if required.

I have retired and have a lump sum as the result of "downsizing". I wanted to invest this in order to provide an income in my retirement. I have no workplace or private pension and only a minimal state pension.

How has James Etheridge helped you?

James fully appreciated how I needed this lump sum to work for me and explained in a very clear way, even to the extent drawing diagrams to make the process clearer, how my needs could be met. Wanted a review of my finances as I had been made redundant and was looking to downsize and possibly take a lump sum from my existing pensions..

He made an in depth look at my financial circumstances, including pensions, equity in my house, savings etc. and calculated how much I would need to take from my pension to tie me over until I got a job. He looked at my three pensions and identified that one was performing very badly and that two were performing exceptionally well but taking very big risks, which I wasn't prepared to do anymore. I had a relatively small sum of money to invest following a return to the UK and needed it managed carefully in order to provide the best return for me over the years to come.

How has James Etheridge helped you?

I contacted James Etheridge at Focused Financial Planning after I had done a good deal of research to find a reputable adviser. My initial meeting with him confirmed that he would be able to provide the kind of service that I needed. I had a relatively small amount of money to invest, and I wanted it invested ethically with quite a long list of companies and countries that I did not want my funds invested in. James had to do a fair amount of research on my behalf but he was consistently patient, and punctual with meeting my requirements. I had not previously used a financial adviser in the UK, but had a financial adviser linked through my Superannuation scheme in Australia: the person there was highly efficient but had very little 'human touch' and I felt often that she could not understand how illiterate I was in financial matters! I have never felt that with James - although I am probably still as financially ignorant. I would recommend this company to anyone seeking a personalised approach to their financial management.

I have relocated to London but continue to have services from James Etheridge. I think the world economy has not particularly helped in securing my investments but I trust James to take care of my funds.

Early retirement for my wife and myself required a through review of our mix of final salary pensions, defined contribution and AVC funds and ISA's This occurred simultaneously with the recent changes to rules and regulations and options available to those individuals yet to take there pensions. With the variety and complexity of options, and the potential tax implications of such choices in both the short and the long term, and our desire to have a fully rounded plan, caused us to investigate Financial advisors in Kent.

How has James Etheridge helped you?

James carried out a very through series of interviews with my wife and myself. These interviews were in depth and covered a great variety of subjects, not simply the more obvious elements. The detailed analysis of budget, expenditure, life style plans, aspirations, cash flows, life insurance, inheritance plans etc:, plus challenges to some of our assumptions, was an excellent process in which to be participating. The explanation of the benefits that can be achieved by use of Trust funds was a revelation and the very detailed resulting investment plans have created a Tax efficient, clearly phased and structured environment for our pensions and investments.

We are in the early stages of the long term financial plan, however having a clearly defined strategy with set objectives and benchmarks, with reviews scheduled and cash flow analysis established longer term investment in personnel pension funds created and Trust funds in place we feel we have the structured outcome we realised we needed to achieve.

I feel a glossary of the many abbreviations used for the various products, pension types, investment platforms etc etc would be of benefit at the outset of conversations with Financial advisors rather than later in the process.
