Harry had advised me and my family for many years as a partner with St James’ Place, before leaving to set up his own business Retire by Design. When I became disillusioned with his replacements I decided to move all my drawdown pension to be managed by him so as to benefit again from his broad understanding and specific application to our circumstances, which are not simple!

Harry possesses an in-depth knowledge of investment opportunities and the tax implications, which has saved me countless thousands of pounds over the years. His insistence that index-linked funds are likely to out-perform the more actively managed funds of St James’ Place is interesting, though I don’t understand the investment side of his advice as much as the tax side so I trust his judgement on this! As a retired tax professional I do more readily understand his ideas on tax, even though my background is in indirect taxes rather than direct.

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

The return on my pension transfer has been spectacular in the first 6 months+ so it is way more than I was hoping for! I have also benefited from new tax ideas enabling me to transfer more money to my son in an inheritance tax efficient way.

What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

Before Harry started Retire by Design my investments were tied up with a well known UK company which underperformed and I found it impossible to move funds elsewhere as they seemed to have me tied up in knots.
