What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

Following on from retirement it was important to me to get sound, independent, professional advice on how to make my income and savings work most effectively, whilst at the same time protecting them. I had previously used my bank and then another financial adviser I had been recommended. However, it became clear to me that I needed to engage someone who was significantly more qualified and one in whom I could absolutely trust with something so important. I carried out a lot of research and, on a number of levels, Mark seemed to tick every box and I have not been disappointed.

How has Mark Bird helped you?

When I first came to Mark the performance of my savings and investments etc were giving me sleepless nights. From day one Mark was able to get an immediate grasp of my affairs and was able to very quickly find a way to alleviate those issues which were giving me concerns. Once my affairs had been stabilised and, had already seen growth, Mark then looked at the best way to advise to advise me and how to move forward in such a way that it matched my attitude to risk, which was fairly cautious. Since then Mark has grown my portfolio in such a way that I didn't think was possible. He also has excellent interpersonal skills which I feel is so important for something so important.

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

Stabilising my affairs following our first meeting and then seeing the acceleration in growth during the following 17 years I have been with him I would say that I have definitely seen the outcome I was hoping for. I would actually go further than that though and say that the outcome significantly exceeds that which I was hoping for. I would also say that Mark takes a genuine interest in my affairs which again matches what I was looking for in 2008. Lastly, I no longer have sleepless nights!

What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

A change of circumstances at work (aged 50), resulting in me being in the rather unusual situation of simultaneously having salary income, pension income and the crystallisation of capital sums. Clearly this situation required broader financial advice and planning than that which would typically be provided by the (then commonplace) local high street bank branch, pushing its own range of products (ISAs etc).

How has Mark Bird helped you?

Initially, by understanding my circumstances, existing assets/investments, objectives/priorities, and attitude to risk. A detailed set of recommendations to create a broad tax efficient investment portfolio ensued. These recommendations covered ongoing regular investment, investment of capital sums and reassignment of certain existing investments for a more favourable return. As circumstances changed over the ensuing 15 years (e.g. retirement from work, receipt of state pension) the totality was (and is) kept under review to ensure the optimum balance and outcome.

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

Indeed I have. The predations of HMRC have been minimised (at least whilst I'm living), and all available allowances in this respect considered on a regular basis, and utilised. Investments have also performed well, and that was not just attributable to generally favourable investment circumstances in the period 2010-2020.

What could they have done better?

Hindsight is a very insightful creature, and I don't tend to ponder upon what might have happened had I not pursued one particular course in favour of sticking with, or taking, another. So, I'm not sure what if anything Mark could have done better. I certainly couldn't have wished for better process in the execution of the steps I did take, at the outset and subsequently. Or for a better response when occasional financial needs (e.g. new car purchase) arose. All very efficient.

Mark has always been on hand for me to ask about pensions and investments and since retirement this has become very important. I have no hesitation in allowing Mark to handle my money as he will always find the best financial product to satisfy my needs. Importantly, Mark always has regular reviews, making suggestions to change, remain or upgrade investments as appropriate. Mark has certainly given me some great advice over the years

At the time I was still working and self employed and my husband had just retired and we wanted advice on investing his lump sum. He came with a recommendation from a friend
