A work colleague and friend recommended John Wright to me a few months ago as I needed advice on the management of my pensions for my target retirement. After an initial telephone call and two video calls he is continuing to educate and advise me on what is the minefield of “pensions”. In my opinion John (and his team) have given me honest advice on the way forward over the next year as I approach retirement and will act on my behalf only when he feels the time is right and I will get good value on my pension pots He is knowledgeable and keen to do the best he can to make things easier for his clients and is always approachable to answer any questions that I may have. I was looking to transfer out a company pension to give me more flexibility. He made his case to head office for the DB transfer, but unfortunately it was declined to advise. It is a shame that there is a disconnect between the "Financial Advisor" and the people responsible for actually providing the "advice" (Head office). It is head office who get the final say, and since TPWM is so big, many of the smaller FA/IFA also use them and so you will get scuppered trying them as well. It's not really TPWM's fault, it's an industry that is designed to keep your pension where it is, so if you can afford to lose or not need your entire pension pot, and you own your own home and have a fantastic high paying job, and have a few other pensions as well, you may be one of the lucky ones!

John helped me to navigate the the difficult process of pulling together 5 pensions spread between 5 different companies and moved them into a true potential fund which has worked very well through the difficult times of Brexit and then Corona virus effects on the UK economy. True Potential provide its customers with a daily update on the markets and a weekly roundup via YouTube which is brilliant and is not subject to the negativity of MSM

I had a very large pension pot in an ex-work place, which would leave very little to my children should I die, I took advice from Pension Wise about finding a good financial advisor, I did my research on the company then I spoke to John from that very initial phone call to our subsequent meetings over Zoom I felt confident and at ease with my choice. I never felt pressured and took my time, often ringing or emailing John to explain things.
How has John Wright helped you?
He is confident knowledgeable and has very friendly puts you at ease way with clients, you are under no pressure to proceed and he is always at the end of a phone for advice. He advised me on my options and explained every step.
Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?
Yes very much so, I'm still working, and adding to my pension pot I know that not only will I have a good retirement when I decide to take retirement, but should anything happen to me now or in the future my children will be taken care of.

I had two defined benefit pension schemes (deferred pensions) but wanted to transfer them a personal pension to give me more flexibility in handling my pension funds.

John gave excellent advise on how I could gain more control over my pension if I transferred to True Potential Wealth Management. He explained how the costs of the schemes and advice would be calculated and taken. He assessed my attitude to risk and from this recommended that I invest in True Potential's Balanced Portfolio.
Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?
Yes, my investments have grown under the current Covid lockdown but I understand the risks and there will also be periods were values fall.
What could they have done better?
I don't believe there is anything more John and his team could have done. Very satisfied with their advice.

I found True Potential and John through Unbiased.co.uk, and he certainly was. He didn't try to sell me products I didn't need, which was a welcome relief. He looked at my financial portfolio and provided me with advice on how to improve my pension arrangements using my excising accounts. John and his team managed the transfer of both my pensions to True Potential. I had very little to do during the transfer period as communication, advice & speed of transfers was excellent. John is enthusiastic & very customer focussed. Both he & his office team respond quickly at all times. His fees are the best I could find & not based on the value of transfer. This concerned me initially but quality of service has continued post transfers.

True Potential use an online app which allows you to monitor your investments and withdraw funds. This has not been as reliable as I would like and the Goals section needs development to cover customers in my age category. I have made John aware and recently I have seen some improvement.

Lockdown meant that Zoom meetings were necessary and although I usually find that method awkward, John Wright made it all so easy. At age 65 I had a private pension pot with a company that had changed hands several times over the past few decades. The company did not offer suitable options for accessing the pension pot in future (eg drawdown). Also I felt that I never really had a grasp on how much I was paying out from the pot annually in terms of fees and I wanted advice on what to do , I.e. ‘stick or twist’ and if ‘twist’, some recommendation for where I could transfer the whole pension pot to.
How has John Wright helped you?
John thoroughly questioned me about my general understanding of investment in general, and my attitude to risk. He obtained information about the existing pension policy and explained the situation concerning fees. John made a case for and explained an alternative form of managed fund (Important to me as previous was passive) provided by True Potential Investments (but not anything outside of True Potential ‘stable’ it should be noted) and provided clear information about one off and ongoing fees for transfer.
Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?
I wanted and got a transfer of a pension pot to a managed, diversified policy. I am clear about the fees I am paying for both the investment and the percentage etc paid to John as a Financial Advisor. These appear to me to be fairly standard charges. (My only comment is that the pension funds available via TPL didn’t really offer much at all on the ‘socially responsible’ front, but hopefully this might change in future).
What could they have done better?
Nothing really. John was very helpful and competent throughout the whole process and our virtual meetings worked well. The reports and general information I received by email were very clear.

I had worked for many companies over the years, and had built up a collection of small pensions which I wanted to combine into 1 pot, I contacted a financial adviser who was not interested because the funds were less than 250k so I gave up. He explained all my options and gave me the confidence to go with my decision. I had several online meetings with him that were carried out in a relaxed way. There was no pressurised selling and John just concentrated on what I wanted help with.

Yes I had previously decided what I wanted to do with my pensions but needed somebody qualified to do this for me due to pension rules. John and his staff did this for me in an extremely efficient and friendly way.

Transfer of pension from a company scheme to a self-invested plan.My wife is approaching retirement age so needed prompt advice to determine whether she was best accepting the scheme's annual salary or transferring elsewhere.
How has John Wright helped you?
John educated my wife and I in the differences between the lump sum and annual salary offered by her company scheme, and the transfer of fund value into her own self-managed scheme. He was able to explain in non-technical terms - so we were best placed to make our decision. John explained the risk, the benefits, and the rationale behind his final recommendation. There was no hard sell. John also offered to investigate my own scheme with a view to comparing cost models etc. Similarly - no pressure or hard sell - just informed unbiased analysis.
Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?
Yes - the transfer has now taken place and the funds invested in the new scheme. We have full visibility of valuation via the online portal / mobile app offered by True Potential.
What could they have done better?
I don't recall much mention of historic performance of the recommended fund or its performance relative to industry benchmarks. There was reference to an anticipated annual return - but less graphical evidence of it being achieved.

i recently took early retirement and the pension company i was with would not set up an draw down and but advised i would be able to request money every month.
How has John Wright helped you?
John and his team were able to talk me through option available to me, advised they can set up a monthly draw down of my pension to suit my needs, explained tax implications, advised on future changes available if needed and the transfer of my pension to True Potential Wealth Management with ease.

I had approached an advisor previously in order to consolidate various legacy pensions but had reached a point where I needed to then understand my pensions situation and John was recommended to me by my brother who had spoken very highly of the service and ongoing relationship that John provided.
How has John Wright helped you?
Initially John was very keen for me to understand my pension and was prepared to spend time educating me on how it all hangs together. Previously, at the mention of 'pensions' I would have glazed over and this is why I had remained in a position of ignorance about one of the most crucial elements of my finances. This is no longer the case. John has provided me with a level of understanding where I now have a genuine interest in something that I had felt was very much a specialised area and out of my grasp. He was keen to address every element and not just the larger 'pots' of money.
Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?
Absolutely and more. I now understand my pensions, have full access to look at them via the online dashboard and have complete confidence that any matters will be dealt with by John and his team, and that my pensions are being actively managed and my interests looked after. John goes the extra mile, he's also assisting with me sorting my will out and his team have been excellent with additional knowledge when I wanted to understand my credit file, not pension related, but because they had the expertise to advise, they were happy to help. Excellent all round and I now enjoy my pension related calls!
What could they have done better?
I honestly can't thing of any improvement suggestions. I am a stickler for outstanding customer service and this is exactly what I've received.

Initially we contacted John for general financial advice and mortgage advice.
How has John Wright helped you?
He arranged a very good mortgage through a high street lender to buy our council house which has been a good investment. Later after I contacted him about retiring at 55 he discussed and arranged both mine and my wife's pension arrangements, laying out everything so simply even I could understand it!
Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?
So far so good, apart from a drop due to the (2020) COVID breakout. We didn't change anything with our pensions and a discussion with John quickly reassured us that was the best option.
What could they have done better?
We don't think he could have done more and is always a pleasure to chat with. He's sometimes as difficult to track down as Lord Lucan (just joking John!) but obviously a very busy and popular advisor.

How has John Wright helped you?
He showed me how to manage my pension and how to invest my savings safely. He actually reassured me what I had in my pension and savings “pot”would be more than enough for me to live to the standard I was hoping for. It was such a relief and because of this I was able to retire earlier than I expected.

Definitely. I’m now retired and doing what I want when I want.

I was looking for somebody honest and reliable to help guide me through what I thought would be a very difficult subject to understand. But working with John I now understand more about pensions and savings.

John has been my advisor for many years now and has helped me transfer pensions, drawdown pensions & understand how much I will have to live on when I retire. I have recommended John to all of my family and I know that my children have taken my advice that John is trustworthy and an excellent financial advisor. They are in the process of setting up their pensions online with John.

As I moved towards retirement age and pension regulations were changing I needed advice on how best to deal with these issues.

John provided exactly the professional advice I was looking for at the time. He was able to work through the mine field of regulations and give both me and my wife the necessary options for pension planning. He was then able to deal with the state and personal pension issues once we retired. This included, transfer of funds to suitable investments and drawdown.

To access some of my pension via drawdown

John came to the rescue originally as a previous advisor was not proactive with my pension. John took over came to my house listened to my requirements gave me his expert advise and within a month my new drawdown pension was in place. During this Month John and his team were in touch regularly giving me updates on the progress he was making. He has since sorted out another 2 pensions for me so I can have one combined Drawdown pension

Yes I'm all sorted

Nothing as I got everything I asked for sorted for me

I was due to retire with a lump sum payment and my husband and I already had savings. We felt we needed advice on how best to invest this money.
How has John Wright helped you?
John looked at our assets, discussed with us our lifestyle and aspirations for the future and gave us options on how to make our money work best for us. My husband also had a pension pot which he had considered taking as either a lump sum or an annuity. Again John was able to give us advice on the best way to proceed for us.
Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?
We feel the our money is invested in the most appropriate way for us. John has reviewed our situation annually, keeping in touch when necessary. He is an extremely amenable, likeable person and we trust him and his judgement. We feel we get the support to we need.
What could they have done better?
We don't feel that there could have been any better service, advice or actions taken than we have had.

It’s difficult to answer this now based on the impact to the financial markets by covid-19. However prior to this I was more than happy with the performance of my investments. John is always available to contact at anytime if I have any questions.
