Robert was very helpful in guiding us through this process, which made it a lot less stressful, and in researching and obtaining the best annuities for us. It was also really useful to be able to have the first meeting face to face, which was really important to us. He also kept us well informed/updated throughout the process.

With interest rates at their highest for several years, I decided to convert my "retirement" ISA into an annuity in order to boost my monthly income and have the financial freedom to have a bit more fun. At age 72, I felt the time had come, particularly since I am still working and earning.

How has Robert Brealey helped you?

I had no idea where to start with this and reckoned I needed professional advice rather than just doing my own inexperienced internet research. Robert explained all my options to me very clearly and concisely, illustrating their pros and cons and emphasising the pitfalls; found the best deal for me; dealt with all the paperwork and the organisational side of the transaction; arranged it all direct with the annuity company so that all I had to do was take the decisions and fill in the forms; he was always available to give clarification and advice. While the process did take several weeks, Robert made it into a straightforward and effortless process for me and gave me all the support and guidance I needed.

I needed advice on moving money out of a stagnant pension fund and I had never used a financial advisor before,

How has Robert Brealey helped you?

Robert worked through all of my options after understanding my current circumstances and desire to keep working for another few years. He did this professionally and calmly and gave sound advise which I was able to discuss with my wife clearly without jargon.

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

Yes, despite my old pension provider being somewhat dysfunctional, Robert kept me informed throughout the entire process of setting up an annuity

What could they have done better?

The forms that are needed to be filled in should be in amendable PDF format (this is more down to the annuity providers not Robert), it meant I had to print off the forms and hand write them, then scan them back in. It would be a lot more efficient if they could be filled in electronically either in a form or on a portal.

After two redundancies and a decision to work independently, I needed to think about how best to protect my family in case I was unable to work. I also wanted to make tax efficient pension contributions.

Robert is a superb advisor. He is hugely knowledgeable and experienced, but combines this with a personable style. He is able to make complex financial matters simple and easy to understand. In reviewing my company pension options, one was to take the money out of the company pension fund and set up a draw down pension to improve flexibility and inheritance planning. We needed to consult with a specialist pension advisor and Robert was recommended by a trusted advisor.

How has Robert Brealey helped you?

We have been working with Robert for about 4 years to ensure we achieved the best outcome for us from the pension opportunities available. He gave us good advice, giving us the facts about the benefits of the existing fund, clearly explaining risks of taking the CETV (cash equivalent transfer value), delaying acting in some areas but, understanding our targets, giving new options which we have acted upon to give greater security in the future. At the appropriate time, he managed the pension fund transfer, set up a secure basic level income leaving further funds for other investment opportunities.

Over the years we have found Robert's help and advice invaluable. He is very thorough in reviewing our finances and making sure he completely understands our needs and attitude to risk. He is very patient and happy to explain things over and over if I don't understand at first. Nothing is too much trouble. Considering retiring at some point and needed some advice on what that might 'look like' financially.

How has Robert Brealey helped you?

Accessed information regarding a company pension that I did not understand. Advised on risk profile of investments and recommended some annual transfers to take advantage of ISA allowance.

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

I am clearer about what the various pension schemes might yield and therefore what my finances might 'look like' in the future, so, at that very broad level, I have seen the outcome I was hoping for.

What could they have done better?

I was disappointed with the lack of definition in the advice given - much of it was accompanied by a caveat which suggested that I didn't need to do anything, or I wasn't clear what I was supposed to be doing. Apart from taking advantage of my ISA allowance, there didn't seem to be anything definite for me to do, now or in the future, and so I felt that the charges were very expensive for what I actually got back. Maybe this is my naivety, but I don't feel it was value for money. I also did not like the Online Portal at all because it does not allow the client to see what communications (or attachments) they have sent the adviser and I like to have a record of all communication (both ways), so the portal is not, in my opinon, fit for purpose.

What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

Our permanent move to France in 2007 . The firm of Siddalls provided detailed financial planning advice prior to our move . Robert Brealey succeeded our original contacts at Siddalls . We remained with him when Siddalls sold its french division : Robert continued to advise in relation to our UK based SIPP . Originally we were in the process of taking early retirement and moving to France and needed advice on pensions and life assurance policies. Robert has continued to help us manage our private pension portfolio and the investments within the pension wrapper since. These have performed very well, above our expectations, I would say.

I live in France but have income and investments in the UK, so needed a UK based adviser to deal with the UK side who also had knowledge about the French side.

How has Robert Brealey helped you?

Each year he does a review of my financial situation taking in to account any changes in terms of income, legislation etc. Then advises me if there are any changes required for my investments to keep up with the times. He is very good at noting the risks attached to the different investments on offer allowing me to make an informed choice. Also, he is very easy to talk to and understand as the array of possibilities for investments is enormous and could be very confusing!

Yes - I am kept up to date with changes and Robert keeps me well informed and is always available by phone or email if I have any questions or concerns. We have an annual reveiw which we do by telephone if I am not in the UK. He also offers several options in terms of investments so I am able to choose a mixture of low and higher risk products. The income derived from the various products is quite acceptable and is a good "spread".

What could they have done better?

I am happy with all that Robert has done so I just hope that he continues to do the same and that the personal contact is maintained - even at a distance. With the mess that is Brexit I am sure I will need plenty of Robert's advice very soon.

In 2010 were in the process of buying a property in France with the intention of taking early retirement. After visiting the France Show held in London we found the company that Robert originally worked for. Both he and his colleague Georgina advised us on numerous aspects of buying and living in France including investments. The original company that Robert worked for was taken over and he and Georgina formed their own company. Not being happy with the service I was receiving from my existing Company, I met with Robert and Georgina in 2018 and having been very pleased with our original advice, moved all our pension and investment advice to Abbotstone.
