What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

My employer was offering incentives to leave my Defined Benefit company pension scheme. As part of the offer I was obliged by my employer to take professional financial advice to determine that leaving the scheme was right for me.

Several years ago I inherited some money. My need for a financial adviser was mostly about looking after this in the best way, so that it would be maximal use in my retirement. He's been so open and available that I felt no need to look elsewhere.

It's only been 2 days so am still expecting a document outlining the investment strategy. The meeting was pleasant enough and I felt things were explained well. If you didn't understand the first time then you were very welcome to say so and go over it again. I was pretty clear on my objectives so it all wrapped up in 45 minutes. If I go with Sam then there will be another meeting. I feel that I only missed one question and that was my fault. Eventually I would like my investment for growth to turn into an income stream without buying annuities. I didn't ask that. I am feeling positive about Sam, the initial and on-going charges and currently don't feel the need to consult another IFA.

He is extremely easy to talk to, makes you feel comfortable and explains options in very simple terms, I felt confident in his ability and he actually got me a very good deal in respect of my options more than covering the small fee charged. He communcates well through email, always prompt and does what he says he will, appoints are always well timed and you never seem hurried.

How has Sam O'Mara helped you?

Sam was recommended to me via a colleague as my previous Financial Advisor had not provided the service I had hoped for. As soon as I spoke to Sam I realised I had made the right decision. Sam was very careful to explain his service and what he could do for me. He listened intently to my personal financial plans and reviewed the products I already had, including two business pensions I had with previous companies plus one for my current company. After carefully reviewing my needs and establishing what I hoped to gain from my investments and my appetite for risk, Sam arranged a new appointment where he said he would have a clear financial plan and further advice on my requirements. I could also then decide whether I wanted to use his services or not. I left the first appointment feeling that I was in much safer hands (I'd already made my mind up to use Sam as an IFA if I'm honest) as well as having a much better understanding of how my money might be invested in general (although I have a fair understanding of financial products, Sam made some of the jargon and technical points much clearer in my mind). My second appointment gave me much more information and really sealed the deal. Sam had prepared a clear representation of what he would do with my money and how he felt he would get the most out of moving my existing plans. There was a clear document that we read through and this was explained step by step. Again, I had the confidence that my money was going to be invested wisely and that I would get continued after investment support and consistent reviews. I actually initially lost money on moving my plan from one IFA to another, but felt this was easily justified by the service and value I would get from Sam. I'm also confident that I will recoup that money in a short space of time due to my funds now being in a much better planned portfolio with more diversification and consistent reviews. Since switching IFA's to Sam he has been in consistent contact with me (without overdoing it) and has also offered some further investment ideas as well as a detailed overview of the recent Government changes to pensions. If you hadn't noticed by now, I am extremely happy to have chosen Sam as an IFA. He's professional, conscientious, patient and on top of it a very personable guy. I am really glad I switched services and now feel much more confident in my investments and actually have put this to the back of my mind where previously it was something I was constantly worrying about. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Sam and I'm really glad someone else recommended him to me.

What could they have done better?

I honestly don't know what Sam could have done more. I even asked him for advice on a potential mortgage and although he couldn't help, he gave me the contact details of someone he trusts.
