What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

I am looking to create a diversified portfolio of investments to maximize our retirement income whilst taking on a level of risk we are happy with. I enjoy the subject of finances, accounting and investing a lot, but I do it as a hobby, not a career. So I was looking for someone I could pay for their time once or twice a year to advise if my strategy is optimal, when considering our goals and the evolving economic landscape.
