With a change in employment circumstances some 8 years ago, I was looking to secure advice around my pensions given I had paid little notice to them and had found myself wanting to understand and take the right option for my future planning. Lump sum injury award with an element in lieu of lost future pension due to loss of career. Effective investment required in the hope of offsetting the impact in retirement.

How has Paul Urmston helped you?

Paul has been able to invest a realistic lump sum, based on my present attitude to risk, in 27 actively managed unit trusts. Maximum benefit is being made of my annual ISA allowance each year, made up of the same unit trusts. Investments totalling the annual ISA allowance are transferred to the tax efficient ISA wrapper at the start of each tax year. Non ISA finds are managed within an investment account. Paul managed my expectations really well in terms of how much it would be prudent to invest initially. He was particularly supportive in ensuring my understanding and providing hard copy documents due to challenges caused by disability.

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

It's early days (8 weeks) and my investment is for growth over the longer term (5-10 years +). My investment has grown a small amount in this initial period and there has been some turbulence but this is to be expected. Only when the asset is realised (cashed in) have you made a profit or loss. Prior to that point it's just figures on paper/screen

What could they have done better?

I'm not even sure this is within Paul's remit....but an assessment of expected personal retirement income from all sources against the projections for income v quality of retirement would have been useful.

I appreciate that the value of funds invested in shares can go down as well as up and some years have been disappointing but the gain in value overall since Paul became my adviser is acceptable.

It would be wrong to respond to short term fluctuations but I do feel that an annual review is too long and perhaps every 6 months would provide a more "hands on" control from the customer's perspective.

I've known Paul for many years from the time I had investments in the Co-op and Paul worked for them. He had always given me good advice so when he became an IFA I transferred my dealings to him.

Having started my own business in 2013 i needed a financial advisor to initially help me sort out my pension, as i had a number of legacy pensions from previous employers. I also needed advise and support to buy additional products such as term assurance and critical illness cover

How has Paul Urmston helped you?

Paul made recommendations on the most beneficial way of combining my pensions, as well as providing ongoing pension planning, designed to enable me to be able to afford to retire when i want to. We also selected and put in place the other required products. In additional Paul has helped me re-mortgage on a number of occasions, putting the leg-work in to identify the best rates and terms.

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

Paul's guidance regarding my pension has been fantastic, not only do i now have a consolidated pension, i am also aware on a continuous basis of how it is performing, and whether it is on-track to achieve my aims. We review performance and objectives at least once per year, and where appropriate Paul will recommend changes. All of Paul's recommendations have achieved the desired outcomes and my investment is on track to deliver against the objectives we identified over seven years ago.

What could they have done better?

To some degree Paul is not able to commit the same amount of time to his clients now as he did back in 2013 - which is a sign of his success. He certainly takes a very proactive approach to scaling his business and has brought in and is developing staff, however the annual financial reviews now focus (naturally) on where he is adding most value, and do not explore opportunities to support in other areas.

A number of my personal pensions were about to mature and I needed advise on what actions to take. Also it was a legal requirement to take professional advise to transfer/consolidate.

How has Paul Urmston helped you?

Paul explained what I could and couldn't do as well as what I should and shouldn't do. He was also able to advise on ethical "green" investments which are something very important to me.

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

Yes indeed, I now have just one personal pension, invested in a range of ethical funds all of which I can monitor easily via a sinlge web interface.

What could they have done better?

Hard to say, things were difficult due to COVID restrictions but that was outside his (and my) sphere of influence.
