We moved into a new property and had a baby in 2018 and wanted to make sure that we had adequate protections in place for life insurance and critical illness. In addition we were keen to ensure our pensions were working as hard as possible to ensure that we could plan for retirement with plenty of time.

What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

A growing young family coupled with the need to start planning properly for a retirement income meant that myself and my partner were keen to look at how we could take a more structure approach to our financial planning. In addition with three young children it was important to me personally that should I had the appropriate protections in place to take care of any unforeseen circumstances.

How has James Blackham helped you?

James has always provided us with clear and well planned advice always highlighting the range of options that were available to us before making recommendations based on both his experience and his obvious understanding of our personal situation. We have never felt that we were being given 'generic' advice and the service has always felt totally bespoke to our needs.

Yes, despite the clear turmoil over the last few years our pension has out performed my own work related policy - so much so that it became an obvious move to transfer this pension into the fund managed by James. Our various protection policies cover our needs as a family and we are always able to review our requirements at our regular review meetings with James.

My husband and I have been clients of James for several years now. We initially sought advice to forward plan for our future retirements. We wanted to ensure that we maintained a good standard of living and that our investments work hard for us even in our retirement. My husband and I were looking to consolidate a number of small pensions that we had both accumulated over the years, and as my husband was also unwell we were looking to secure my and our childrens' financial futures.

How has James Blackham helped you?

James has taken the time to understand our financial situation and has carefully explained everything that he has recommended for us, saying what and why he has suggested them. When the situation changed and my husband condition meant that some of the recommendations may not longer be the right thing for us, he clearly explained the consequences and suggested alternatives. We ended up with all the pensions that we wanted consolidated in one place in a wrapper along with much if our savings, all performing better than where they were, taking anyway specifically my husband's worries about his families' future.

Yes. All of our pensions and much of the savings are consolidated into one wrapper so they can be managed more easily. I have taken early retirement, which meant I had a substantial lump sum to invest, but also a gap of six years before I can claim my state pension. I will need to use some of the lump sum to generate an income for those six years.

The attitude to risk questionnaire is rather daunting for someone with little investor experience. I appreciate it’s an industry standard, but I was rather surprised when the questionnaire came up with the “correct” result for me. A guide to what “strongly agree/disagree” means in practice would be useful. However, James did explore my attitude to risk thoroughly, and gave me plenty of opportunity to develop my thoughts on the subject.
