We wanted advice about how best to invest a Private Pension pot and how best to provide an adequate income for our retirement from our available assets.

What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

Having worked in the financial industry it was clear that specialist knowledge was needed with regard to advice on pensions and Inheritance Tax Planning and Nicola has provided this. I was comfortable with investment into stocks and shares via my ISA but did not want the bother of checking fund performance, moving funds, etc., and again Nicola has ensured that the right "platform" company has done all the hard work.

Nicola's approach to finances is very down to earth and she takes a practical view of each client's situation. Her advice on pensions, IHT and the funds within our ISAs has been invaluable.

My annual reviews with Nicola are comprehensive, and cover both the financial and non-financial elements. They are agenda led, well structured and clearly explained with opportunities to ask questions. Financial: - Nicola has identified and implemented a solution to align the timing of the monthly receipt of my crystallised and non-crystallised income which has simplified the management of my day to day finances. - I receive detailed quarterly performance reports, which include a clear summary to ensure I fully understand the contents. - Relevant products are discussed at both the annual review and in interim discussions, and are matched to my risk appetite and personal circumstances. The merits and dis-merits of each, e.g. ESG Frameworks and Annuities are fully explained to enable me to make an informed decision. - I have full online access to view my pension portfolio. Non-Financial: - I have full access to the Client Hub, allowing me to send/receive reports, view annual and interim reviews including any agreed actions, agreements, implementation plans and general correspondence. - I receive regular newsletters that focus on both day to day business matters, but also thematic topics that help to build my wider knowledge. - Nicola maintains contact on a regular basis to check that there are no issues and to draw to my attention any relevant updates. These are always confirmed via email. - I am connected with Nicola via LinkedIn. This introduces me to wider financial services discussions and debates, which again help to develop my knowledge. What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

Whilst I’m a former accountant and insolvency practitioner this was never going to be enough for my wife who wanted to be sure we could afford to live life after retirement. I have been with Jane Smith for many years, first with Jane Smith herself and subsequently with Nicola Watts. Initially, whilst still working I was looking for someone to help with my pensions and advice on sensible ways financially to go into my retirement. I sold my business and needed help with investments. I have now been retired for 15 years and have had all sorts of ups and down including a divorce and children, grandchildren, imheritance planning and dealing with various family matters.

What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

Fast approaching retirement, my husband in particular, required assistance with where best to invest his pension pot. We both wanted advice about the best way to maximise our pension pay outs in order to provide us with the retirement experience that we desired. Having used Jane Smith Financial some time previously for a different matter, this was our first port of call. We had absolute trust that we would receive the advice that we sought.

How has Nicola Watts helped you?

Initially, Nicola took the time to get to know us a people, about our family and to understand our hopes and dreams for the future and the kind of retirement that we would ideally like to be living. She has advised us on how to invest our money in such a way as to provide the level of income that we sought by using a diverse means of investment in a tax efficient manner. Her friendly manner immediately puts the client at ease, and we rest assured that our investments are being overseen and reviewed regularly. I had recently retired and needed advice on how to make the most of the money I had and to put my pensions to best use. I had received, in the past, some very poor investment advice from elsewhere and was in danger of losing a considerable sum; she advised me how make an approach to the financial ombudsman, which was successful.

Primarily, Nicola understood that my understand of finance, investments etc is very limited. She is very patient in explaining , making sure I understand the advice that was being offered and always offers to answer any later queries/ second thoughts I may have.

My former employer was looking to lighten their pensions responsibility by "buying out" employees. The company offered a financial incentive for ex-employees to leave the company pension scheme. I decided to accept their offer, but this meant finding a financial adviser to help me with my ongoing pension plans and investments.

What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

A change of ownership at my employer resulted in a windfall, and my wife and I realized that we needed professional help to manage this situation to best advantage.

How has Nicola Watts helped you?

Nicola made a detailed analysis of our financial position, and by patient questionning, was able to tease out of us our (surprisingly divergent) individual attitudes and wishes regarding our financial situation. Nicola then worked with us to come up with a plan that took us to a sweet spot with which we were both happy, and led us through a process of simplifying the structure of our investments to a more streamlined structure, and finding suitable investment vehicles to achieve our objectives, which we would never have managed by ourselves. The insights that Nicola provided into the state of our finances with regard to approaching retirement gave me a lot of reassurance and confidence to make that bnig decision (notwithstanding that the unforseen advent of Covid-19 has delayed the decision considerably).

We have absolutely seen the desired outcome in terms of feeling that our finances are now properly under control and understood, and while global circumstances have been turbulent, Nicola has steered us on a stable path with which we are comfortable.
