A mixture of personal circumstances. Both me and my parents self-employed, with no previous borrowing/ mortgage history.

What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

I had not reviewed my pensions and savings for many years. I was aware that I was probably losing money because I had not done so.

How has Patrick McClelland helped you?

He reviewed my pensions and savings, and showed me how to gain greater returns. He also advised about whether I should pool all my different pensions or keep them separate. He recommended an online 'wrap', including pension and ISA funds, which has (excepting the blip when the pandemic hit) performed at a far better rate than my pensions and investments would have done if I'd continued without his help. He was also happy to abide by my request to invest as far as possible in ethical funds; he warned me that I might not make as much money by doing so, but he did not pressure me to change my mind. He was also kind enough to take the time to advise me on something to do with my will, even though it didn't really fall within his remit, which was the behaviour of a friend rather than a paid professional adviser.

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

Yes. Every time I check my 'wrap' online, I'm pleasantly surprised at how well it's doing. I was particularly pleased to see that some money has been invested in Tesla and also in AstraZeneca because of the Covid vaccine it is producing. Ker-ching!

What could they have done better?

Patrick has been advising me for just over a year. At present, I can't pinpoint anything that I would ask him to change.

What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

A friend recommended Patrick to me over 30 years ago. At the time I was looking for a way to save for a pension in addition to the state provision.

How has Patrick McClelland helped you?

For more than 30 years now I'e relied on Patrick to keep an eye on my investment portfolio. I am aware of the options for investing but Patrick is immersed in the subject every working day, so his knowledge is extremely good. If he spots an interesting or important trend that could have an impact on my investments he'll always be in touch to discuss my options.

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

I was hoping to retire in my mid 50's and I've done that. Without Patrick I'm not sure that would have happened.

What could they have done better?

I don't think there is anything he could have done better. I know of several times when his advice to me cost him income but was the right thing for me.

As a full time working woman, I felt that I neither had the time or the knowledge, to try and make sure that my hard earned income, was working as effectively for me as possible. I wanted someone to advise me, without feeling like I was being 'sold at' and someone that would get me and that I could trust.

Patrick spent time finding out where I was financially and my attitude to finances and investment , and he listened to how I felt (and why!) which enabled him to understand where I wanted to be, in a realistic and achievable way.

I am absolutely thrilled that Patrick is my financial adviser and I thoroughly recommend him. Everything he has recommended and advised on has been intelligent, sensible and has worked well for me so far. I am not a rich person, but like many people who have worked all their lives and have a pension and property and various investments here and there - I do want to protect and grow what I have got, and I want to invest for the future in a sensible way too.

What could they have done better?

I think I should have spent more time with Patrick! He has always looked after things and has checked and updated everything for me and been a great adviser, but he is not a hard or pushy salesperson and he respects his clients (which is good!) but if I had made myself ask him for more input and ideas over these years, I am pretty sure I would be in an even better situation than I am in!

After a bad experience with a financial adviser in the Nineties, I needed to find someone who could offer straightforward advice about the savings I had and the pension I was building up

How has Patrick McClelland helped you?

Patrick's annual recommendations involved changing my investment pattern, with regard to being more open to funds not generally offered by most investment companies. My portfolio became more diversified, I consolidated two work pensions into my own private pension and the ISAs for me and my wife were tweaked to target the best growth.

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

Yes – though of course Trump and Brexit will do their worst to shrink the pot. The level of growth I've seen has far outweighed any tracker accounts and has been a decisive factor in me taking a year off after redundancy, as well as returning to work in a position of far less stress (and money). He's not happy aboput that last bit, of course.

What could they have done better?

He could take pity on a lowly paid worker and provide this service for free! Well, the fees would be a bone of contention had the returns not been so much better than had I been tinkering myself (or merely employing as tracker). His choice of football club leaves something to be desired, but in terms of financial advice he is something of a Special One...

Some 20 years ago and working in the financial industry it was clear that I needed to take a more focused approach to Financial planning. I was curious to find out how professional advice could provide a strategy to achieve future financial goals.

Patrick did just that. His office was very close by and he was able to accommodate my busy working life by offering Saturday appointments.
