I recently consulted Rob Mansfield on matters of income tax on my private pensions. I have moved to Portugal and there are questions of inheritance tax as well as on domicile. In a Zoom call, Rob was able to give me very useful guidance on these questions as well as pointing me to several other sources of information, which overall are likely to reduce the tax burden on my pension income considerably. I can highly recommend his services!

I was just lucky that I found this financial provider in the time of need. Rob was professional, helpful and tailored his response to a niche of NHS redundancy and pension. I felt that he not only provided objective advice but also pointed out at considerations I had no thought through. I would highly recommend the Rootes Wealth Management as your independent financial advisor for the reasons of versatility, robustness and technicality.

Robert:

Thank you so much for the lovely review. It was a pleasure talking with you and I look forward to speaking with you again.

In common with many people I have reached my early sixties with a clutch of small pensions, some from jobs way back in the distant past from companies that have since been bought and sold. The knowledge that at some point I was going to have to invest some time into tracking these funds down, persuade the companies that I was who I said I was and then ask them to send me a chunk of information I probably wouldn’t understand, was one that filled me with a kind of creeping dread. In that period of many Boxing Days I set about contacting my four pension companies. Some were easier to find than others and on one particular occasion I really was expecting to be asked to cut down the largest tree in the forest with a herring (Monty Python) before they accepted that I was me. I finally did arrive at the situation where I had three statements and one admission that I hadn’t actually contributed for long enough and that they would have to send my money back – minus tax. Having arrived at this situation, however, I realised that although I really wanted more monthly income right now, I had no idea how to go about this or whether in fact it would be a bad idea in the long run. At this point I noted Rob with his pull-up banner at Hildenborough Farmers’ Market. Here was a man who clearly knew about pensions and had paid for a banner that said ‘There are no stupid questions’. I contacted Rob who asked me to send what I had to him by e-mail and also to go to the HMRC website and print out my current tax and NI contribution statements. Within a couple of weeks I had a phone call with Rob. He went through my current NI situation and clearly explained what I could do and when I would need to do it if I wanted to ensure I got the full state pension. He also clarified what the deficit would likely be each month if I didn’t. Rob then went through each of my pensions in turn explaining what the options were. It turned out that one of my pensions, taken out back in 1989, was actually payable from my 60th birthday. I had not noticed that and the pension company certainly hadn’t told me that my pension was now due. At the end of the phone call I honestly felt as though a window had been opened and instead of my grey cloud of creeping dread I had a clear understanding of what I could do and how I might do it. Rob was totally clear and concise, obviously knowledgeable and really approachable. I would have no hesitation in recommending that anyone speak to him to shed light on what ought to be straightforward but is not.

Robert:

Thank you so much for the lovely review. I'm so glad you got so much value from our chat. I enjoy the farmers' market sessions, that's what they're for - to let people ask any questions they want and get clear, factual answers. I look forward to seeing you at the next market!
