Andrew was quick to respond and we have had two calls. He has also sent through a proposal. He has a gentle manner and his priority is to understand my aims rather than sell his services. It's a far cry from my experience with this sector so far.

Andrew advised on a suitable investment strategy for my wife and i . Andrew is not like most financial advisors I have come across. he is a little bit quirky and I really like that. What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

I am 71 years old and was keen to plan ahead in terms of how much money I would need if I had to go into care and what I could afford to give to my children and reduce the burden of Inheritance Tax. I'd had advice from the two firms where my money was invested but I wanted an independent opinion

How has Andrew Brixey-Williams helped you?

He used the computer programme to work out a number of scenarios eg if I gave away x amount to the children and went into care aged 80 for 5 years, how much money would I have left, if any? The system is flexible so he patiently worked through a wide variety of possibilities first with me and then in a separate meeting with me and my children so they themselves could appreciate the likely outcomes, I particularly appreciated his sensitivity to our family's dynamics!

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

Yes in the sense that it is now much clearer to me that I can't afford to give away as much money as one of the advisers suggested

I had neither the time nor the inclination to manage my finances myself any more, having managed them for many years. Additionally, some family matters had to be attended to, that I did not feel qualified to manage alone.

After many years of inaction and inertia, I wished to overhaul my existing savings and investment portfolio. I had also recently inherited funds, which needed to be managed. I was specifically looking for an advisor who was knowledgeable about ethical/green investments, who came personally recommended from a trusted friend, and who could deal with the complexities of my situation as a UK citizen who has been a long-term expatriate for most of my professional life.

Glad to hear that we've achieved the desired outcome over what has been quite a lengthy period and with some challenging market conditions along the way. We had some real issues with the distribution of funds to a beneficiary, with the fund provider requesting beneficiary ID verification information on two separate occasions owing to a change of manager, but we have also looked at our own internal procedures to help avoid future problems like this. In terms of value, this has been a pro bono arrangement from the outset, so we have carried out all of the work without charge.

What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

After my husband died, I needed advice on investments and was looking for someone who could advise me on how to get a good return,without taking unreasonable risks. I also wanted a Financial Adviser who could ensure that funds were being invested reasonably ethically.

How has Andrew Brixey-Williams helped you?

Andrew has been incredibly helpful over the last 4 years. He made a real effort to understand my financial needs and goals has assessed the level of risk I am prepared to take on investments and the areas I am willing to invest in. After a couple of initial meetings he came up with a good portfolio of investments which we have reviewed on an on-going basis. I have also enjoyed his regular newsletters which provide useful advice and is a good read even for a non-financial specialist. He has also referred me to other specialists (e.g. accountants and tax advisers) when needed.

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

Yes I have been very pleased with the performance of my investments. Andrew has ensured that these are invested in the most tax efficient way, and has advised when funds need to be moved. The rate of return, to date, has been better than anticipated.

What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

I had invested in different pension funds over several years and wished to consolidate my funds in one place.

How has Andrew Brixey-Williams helped you?

He advised me in a clear and concise manner about the implications of keeping the pension funds where they were and of moving them to one account, with particular reference to the recent changes in pension regulations so that I could make a decision about the most appropriate course of action.

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

I was very satisfied with the advice which I received which led to me moving my pension savings into one account which provides the future flexibility regarding withdrawal of funds which I wanted.

The process took rather longer than I had expected but I appreciate that there are various regulatory requirements affecting pension transfers which have to be met.

We were slightly delayed by the introduction of the new 'pension freedoms' in the middle of the process, and the need for the advisory community to think long and hard about best practice for clients. What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

Andrew Brixey Williams came to provide a talk on pensions at my place of work approximately 25 years ago. I was impressed by his clarity, his integrity and has client centered approach. I consulted him about private pensions and savings investment for my child. When my husband and I retired we took advice again as to how to invest our lump sums to provide income for the future.

How has Andrew Brixey-Williams helped you?

Andrew provided what has proved to be good advice concerning my our pension sums and the pot has been growing nicely. He has kept up with us regularly to review our needs, our outgoings and to review our attitude to risk. He has always been there when we needed advice and has responded very quickly to phone calls needing information.

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

Yes. my husband now receives a regular payment to boost his NHS pension making it easier for us to help our children and still enjoy ourselves. It is hard to know whether we could have done better on our own - I doubt it as we do not have the kind of knowledge needed. We are happy with the arrangements he has made for us.

What could they have done better?

I cannot think of anything that could have been done better.

What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

I received a payout from divorce and had no idea how to use it sensibly to provide for me in later life.

How has Andrew Brixey-Williams helped you?

He started by working out my exact circumstances, then took a lot of time to understand exactly what I wanted and needed from my assets for the rest of my life. I had seen other IFAs before who seemed only to want to steer me towards their favourite products. Andrew took the time to listen and understand, and then to check to make sure he had understood correctly.

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

Very much so. I have a flexible portfolio that is not dependent on any one sector or area, and I have great flexibility in accessing it quickly without penalties should I choose to do so. It is exactly what I wanted.

What could they have done better?

I have to confess that I can't think of anything he could do better - although I could have been a better client by taking a more active interest, he has had to take the time and trouble to work out what I want and need with only my less-than-specific ideas to go on. Sometimes I would prefer to skip some of the explanations, but these are demanded by the licensing body and so are government requirements and probably a Good Thing in the end.
