What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

I required advice to plan for retirement ( a few years ago) that took me to a point of maximising my pension contribution capability. Subsequently advised on the investment of the sale proceeds of a business I part owned. I initially engaged with Mark in 2012 seeking financial advice with regard to a modest 'nest egg' as I approached retirement. Key objectives were to consolidate pensions and savings and obtain a consistent and informed source of advice underpinned by integrity, discretion and competence.

Mark and his team at Ascot Wealth Management have managed my financial affairs since 2012. The consolidation of pension funds has been achieved overtime and his advice has enabled me to address a number of difficult and changing personal circumstances. On all occassions Mark has acted with the highest levels of a integrity demonstrated to me by recommendations to retain certain positions despite the opportunity to advise alternative AWM products.

Mark has enabled me to achieve my key goals despite some rocky moments (including recent COVID issues). On occassions he has offered innovative solutions and on others provided an appropriately cautionary tone. In my opinion, Mark and his business represent the best possible balance between the security of a major financial institution and the personal service of a smaller business.

What could they have done better?

Mark has demonstrably offered sound and personalised financial advice in my best interests. On occassions his advice has countered my instincts (and subsequently been proven correct) and on others he has resisted the temptation to recommend AWM products over those held with other companies. My reasons for seeking financial advice were protect myself from myself. Mark and his team have consistently done this with both subtelty and effiicacy.

Fundamentally an absence of engagement and a feeling of getting pro-active advice and value for money with my previous IFA. I approached Mark Insley as I was seeking high quality personal service and a business that could help me with managing my pension funds and ISA's for all family members including children.I also needed someone that I knew had given high quality advice to others (as I tend to rely on personal recommendations quite heavily).

Mark has taken over and moved my pension arrangements to a fund that will hopefully ( based on past performance) perform better than my previous arrangements, and at a lower charging structure. With retirement approaching I was looking for a financial adviser to review my pensions and consider whether I had sufficient funds to maintain a good lifestyle going forward. I also wanted to review options for a transfer of my DB pension to a SIPP. My experience of financial advisers up to then had comprised those who resembled used car salesman to others who simply did not inspire confidence with some big decisions looming. I was on the verge of thinking that it might just be better to forget the process and take the DB pension when I did a final search and Ascot Wealth Management came up. I am delighted and relieved to say that this is a company that breaks the mould of traditional financial advisers and having dealt with Mark over many months now I trust his advice implicitly.

How has Mark Insley helped you?

Mark carried out a review of my pensions and produced a comprehensive report with scenarios. Adding new scenarios as we developed our plans was always taken on board. AWM even dealt directly with my former employer to redirect some pension funds to my benefit and took the stress off my shoulders. Mark is an engaging, highly knowledgeable adviser who communicates in a very clear way. Working with him over the last 9 months has not only provided a flexible and diverse portfolio going forward to fund our retirement but most importantly has given me the confidence to make these vital decisions and develop an ongoing interest in portfolio management from being a relative novice. At no point was there any pressure to transfer, the options, advantages and disadvantages were clearly explained but Mark was very clear that it was a decision for us.

Absolutely. Clearly investments come with the usual health warning but we have completed a partial but significant DB transfer to a SIPP and have started to build an interesting and diverse portfolio. Having Mark as our adviser has enabled us to move ahead with confidence and we expect to work with him on an ongoing basis having developed an excellent working relationship.

To be honest we were relieved to find someone who delivered what we wanted and the service has been exceptional. Sometimes some members of the team join meetings remotely which for my generation is new but after one meeting you find yourself thinking they are in the room with you. After all its the advice which is important, not where people are. It also demonstrates the innovative nature of the company. In conclusion I would have no hesitation in recommending Mark and AWM.

He understood my needs and prepared plans and meetings with a rigour that resulted in my having to make several changes, about which I was nervous, to my investment portfolio. I had to make a leap of faith having decided to use the services of this young and relatively new team.

What could they have done better?

I have, in my older age, found that my affairs are somewhat more complicated than I would have liked as a result of Mark's clever suggestions and which I would have relished in my 40's and 50's but not so appealing in my late 70's. So while Mark, or a member of his team, visit me at home at frequent intervals and while I receive regular updates on the investments I sometimes find I lose sight of the wood for the trees. I have not explained this concern to Mark so am confident that he will address it at our next meeting.

I didn't speak to Mark directly, I spoke to a member of his team who said he was an Independent Financial Advisor; although he came across more like a sales rep. He pushed a single product, with a few variables, in my direction which I pointed out was not a particularly good match for my needs and was actually quite expensive for the very limited service I required. I was offered no alternative. I can see where some people might find this service convenient, but it was not for me. I have no plans to use this company.

HI Richard disappointing to see you left a rating of 1. I was travelling at the time and i have been told you were made aware i was unavailable. I have listened back to the call with our Adviser. We would not give specific advice in a first meeting prior to engagement and i feel all your questions were answered. Your needs sounded pension specific and an idea was floated and to have a 36 minute conversation on a specific need i think was fair from our side for an initial non face to face conversation in understanding if we could help you. So as i said its disappointing you feel a 1 star was warranted.

What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

approaching retirement age and the need to change my defined benefit pension into a more flexible pension set up.

How has Mark Insley helped you?

Mark was very welcoming from the initial contact and explained his services comprehensively and clearly in terms I could understand the explanations for the proposal were very clear and helpful. Mark made the transition was easy asa could be even though the original pension holders were less than understanding or helpful.

We are still in the very early period of the transfer to a wrap and so far the process has been handled with care and understanding , the performance of the wrap is monitored very closely and re adjustments are flagged and explained very clearly and with a view to a maximisation of profits with regulated risk taken into account.

What could they have done better?

Mark and AWM have been the clearest and most helpful financial advisors that I found in the somewhat restricted transfer of defined benefit pensions. Many were either completely negative to my needs or were looking to charge exorbitant fees. AWM staff have been very conscientious in maintaining a dialogue with me at all times for which I am very grateful.

What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

I was obliged to take advice for a DB pension transfer to my SIPP. Many IFAs shy away from this or insist you invest the money with them. Mark was much more open, flexible and transparent.

How has Mark Insley helped you?

He and his team did the required analysis to come up with advice on whether to transfer or not, sufficient to use with both the DB scheme and the receiving scheme.
