What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

I had decided to retire and was looking for advice on how best to take/invest my occupational pension funds. In particular I was unsure about how much of my pension to take as a lump sum versus monthly income, and how best to invest a lump sum. My husband I also had some savings that we envisaged could be better invested. Having never sought financial advice before, I chose Joanne because my parents-in-law had experienced a good and trusted relationship with her over several years.

How has Joanne Gott helped you?

My husband and I were making decisions jointly and we had several meetings with Joanne. First, she helped us to think through the broader context of the financial decisions I was making, such as our broader life plans and attitude to financial risk. Using a pension forecast from my current employer, along with a smaller historical pension pot, plus knowledge of our existing savings and my forecast State Pension (I was retiring a little early), she then guided us through different financial scenarios which allowed us to take a decision on the balance between taking my occupational pension as a lump sum vs monthly pension income. Regarding the lump sum element, along with savings we were interested to invest longer-term, she then advised us on where to invest these funds, explaining clearly her reasoning. We wanted to retain some of our savings for work on our home and Joanne emailed us some general advice around instant access-type savings and specific suggestions to think about.

It’s early days in terms of results from our investment portfolio with Joanne, but the process she carefully guided us through means that we feel confident about the trust we have placed in her professional judgement and the decisions we have made as a result.
