What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for a legal adviser?

I had initially approached a well respected Solicitor in North Wales for advice regarding my need for a Financial Settlement as my husband had applied for a Divorce. Due to the highly complex nature of the high net worth of the Marital and Non Marital Assets involved in my case he advised me that in his opinion I needed the services of a Solicitor who is a lead expert in cases such as mine in order to achieve the fair outcome I desired. He referred me to Phil Kentish and reassured me that Phil had the in-depth expertise that my financial case required.

Phil called me whilst he was on a family holiday abroad the day after I had been referred to him. I was very frightened and in dire straits, my mental health was in tatters and I had been cut off financially from the joint bank account. I gave him an outline of my predicament and Phil calmly reassured me that I was going to be fine and not to worry and that I was to await a call from his personal Secretary Judy Sullivan, who would arrange our first meeting on his return. Judy promptly called and arranged the meeting and assured me that I was now in very safe hands and to trust the process. From that very first meeting, Phil's pragmatic and caring professional expertise guided and helped me through a very complicated and at times a very difficult process to navigate. His extensive knowledge of Financial Settlements, coupled with his long career and vast experience gave me confidence to continue with the case through to its successful conclusion. He has a very tight team behind him, Joe McGregor and Judy Sullivan, who were both well versed in my case and worked hard in assisting Phil throughout, in an incredibly supportive and caring way. Their combined knowledge of my case and exemplary work ethic as part of Phil's team ensured I was always kept fully informed as the case progressed. Phil always explained every stage of the proceedings to me carefully to ensure I knew exactly what was involved and we would discuss and agree as to how each stage would be managed going forward. Our aim was always for a fair and financially secure settlement on both sides. My case was complex, difficult to navigate and besieged with seemingly insurmountable hurdles to cross throughout. It involved a multi million pound net worth consisting of properties, land ownership and a farming partnership. With all the valuations and facts taken into consideration, Phil had advised me of an anticipated likely fair outcome which we worked towards throughout the process. This figure was based on his vast experience in cases such as mine. After years of financial and emotional abuse, a friend recommended Phil when my now ex-husband was imprisoned for theft and arson of our family home. What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for a legal adviser?

I needed to provide a statutory declaration evidencing supporting evidence for my application to the Italian consulate for citizenship by descent.

How has Philip Kentish helped you?

I contacted Philip following a recommendation from a family member. I had applied for Italian citizenship based on my great grandfather being born in Italy not long after the state of Italy came into existence. The consulate required additional supporting evidence as the spelling of my great grandfathers name was different to my anglicised spelling. Essentially they wanted me to show that the person I claimed was my great grandfather, actually was him. He was born nearly 150 years ago and came to the UK before there were any immigration controls and so there was no record of his arrival nor any other documents like a passport. Philip advised me to gather any information that I could from official sources like census', which is what I did. Philip then took this information and turned it into a chronological story line. He added extra information, to start justifying how the spelling of the surname changed e.g. my great grandfather was illiterate and so others spelt his name on the census', often transposing letters 'i' and 'e'. He made excellent links between all the facts and turned it into a statutory declaration. Eventually he sent me a copy and as soon as I read it, I was totally convinced of the arguments/justifications of how the spelling changed. I sent this document to the consulate expecting not to hear for many months, but I was blown away to receive an email from the consulate just one week later to say that my application had been successful and they recognised my right to Italian citizenship. This could only have happened due to the quality of the statutory declaration, it must have been so convincing that they approved it immediately. At all times Philip kept me updated, responding to any questions the same day, either with a phone call or email. It really was a fantastic and totally professional service.

When I first met Phil and the team I had been through two years of trying to keep my marriage afloat and been under a lot of strain whilst my husband continued to have an affair with his mistress. I felt ashamed and alone and didn’t want anyone knowing my predicament. I had become introverted and a total wreck not knowing how to face a single day once my ex departed the home as I had a business to run, andelderly mother to look after and both my sons had returned home same year after their own break ups as well as my own. We had been in a marriage for thirty eight years and in a relationship since both of us were sixteen at school. He was my life and soul mate and my life was in ruins.

Mr. Kentish and his team have always gone that extra mile, even after the court order had been drawn, the advice and support continued. It is so easy to talk to every member of staff. One of the best words to describe Mr. Kentish is fair. I was getting divorced and did not at all like, or feel comfortable with, the first solicitor I consulted. A friend who is also a solicitor recommended Phil.

Phil was patient and understanding from the beginning and throughout the entire process, which, in my case, ran for over 14 months! Phil is not what you might expect from a solicitor in so much as he is very easy to talk to and has a great sense of humour which I think it so important considering how stressful divorce generally is!.

In the most part yes, though it's fair to say that no one wins in divorce. Though the outcome was not completely what I had hoped for, given the personalities involved I don't think anyone could have got a better result than Phil did. His knowledge in this area as well as his valuable local knowledge combined means I can now move on with my life.

More a comment on the whole legal system than directly aimed at Phil but I do wish the system would embrace the digital age. Reams and reams of paperwork that could so easily be converted to digital and save trees and the environment not to mention the costs!
