After I made a capital gain from selling my business, my wife and I were seeking specialist advice on tax planning and structuring and a long-term investment strategy. We had also accumulated numerous workplace pensions over the past few years, and these needed to be transferred and consolidated.

We have very much seen the outcome we were hoping for when we first engaged with Julian and his colleagues at The Private Office. We now have a sophisticated, diversified and tax-efficient portfolio whose constituent parts are invested in different ways to meet defined objectives and distinct time-frames, ranging from a cash management platform for our near-term needs all the way through to very long-term thematic investments.

I came to see Julian as I had not reviewed my pensions for a decade and I wanted to make sure I am on track to meet my retirement expectations.

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

With such a tumultuous year that I was worried that my plans may have been knocked off course, but not only was I given reassurance last year that TPO was reviewing the investments, but at my recent review my pension has not just maintained it's value - it has actually increased significantly. By meeting and dealing with Julian and the team at TPO I am able to relax knowing that my hard earned money is being looked and my financial future is secure.

How has Julian Frere helped you?

He pointed out how skewed by pensions fund allocation had become by not amending them over the years and they were far riskier that I would have liked. We have moved them into a TPO portfolio. He also explained that I would need to increase my savings if I want to meet my goals - but this is achievable and it has given me huge confidence that I am doing OK.

I can't really think of anything. I am reassured when required but not bombarded with information I don't need.

We had been living overseas for a long time and needed specialist advice for repatriating our offshore investments. We spoke to numerous advisors but we found Julian to be the most personable, he had an immediate grasp on the complications of our situation and The Private Office appeared to be very well run and independent.

He gave us clear advice and recommendations. He was not looking to invest as much as possible to maximise the amount of money under his management, he was genuinely looking at the best solutions for us.

The repatriation of our money went smoothly, in the most tax-efficient manner. Markets have been very volatile but we are confident that we made the right choice of advisor and that the long-term trend will be positive.

I honestly can't think of anything. He didn't overstate the amount we could realistically expect to gain from the market, as we have a house extension project starting, he advised that we keep cash available for that and he gave excellent tax advice, although he did recommend we also seek specialist tax advice, which we have done.

I had not reviewed my pensions for a decade - so didn't know what state they were in. Any while I knew the value, I didn't know how much I actually needed to be able to retire in the manner in which I want to - I still have a few years left!

How has Julian Frere helped you?

Not only did he point out that the portfolio risk was far higher that I was comfortable with, but I am now also clear that I am close but not quite at the level I need to be in order to retire comfortably. I the cash flow forecasting was enlightening and I can't believe that no one has show me this before. How else can you know how much you need to save!

I wanted to consolidate my pensions into a SIPP. I wanted to check my investment strategy. I was uncertain about inheritance planning.

How has Julian Frere helped you?

Julian did a thorough review of my various pensions pots. He advised which ones to consolidate and which ones to leave in place. We identified a suitable home for them taking into account cost and my risk appetite. We identified a pension I had been mis-sold. On inheritance planning I found my current strategy was disastrous and would have resulted in a significant tax bill.

I now have a much better idea of the make up and value of my pension pots. I have much more control and visibility of my SIPP. I have much more awareness of the implications of inheritance tax and am putting in place strategies to minimise my exposure.

What could they have done better?

I am not aware of anything Julian could have done any better. He has made me much more aware of issues and helped me to have a clearer vision now and in the future.

I was rapidly approaching retirement and wanted to consolidate my pensions. I also needed advice on inheritance planning with one or two tricky issues.

How has Julian Frere helped you?

Julian did a full review of my finances. There were several 'Ah ha' moments. Several areas, which I thought I understood and had control of, turned out to be vulnerabilities. Things I thought were good retirement strategies turned out to be poor decisions. Julian gave me a clear view of my situation and some recommendations of how to remediate the issues. Julian and his team made a complex situation simpler and clearer. He made it understandable and manageable.

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

My financial position is now clear, understandable and much simpler. The vulnerabilities are reduced and some of them could save me many thousands. I would say they are now in control whereas before I only thought they were under control. Before I had the advice I was sceptical about the value of a Financial Advisor. One or two of the people we approached initially I am still sceptical of. Julian has been an excellent mentor and guide. He has given me value for money and very good advice. I would (and have) recommend him unreservedly.

How has Julian Frere helped you?

Julian did two key things. We reviewed what I have and discovered that I had far too much in high risk technology investments. As a whole my investments had done well but it was definitely time for a change as I don't want to take a very high risk with what I have so far. We have since realised those gains and are easing back into the markets. The other aspect of my finances that we ran through was if the amount I have and am continuing to save is enough. This was a fascinating and enlightening process which gave me a clear understanding of how much more I need to be secure. Bottom line is I need to keep saving but the amount I need to save is achievable. I have peace of mind now which is paramount.

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

With a bit of chasing from Julian and his team, we managed to get the pensions cashed in at probably the best possible time - and now we are drip feeding it back over time. So yes, not only do I feel that my pensions are being managed actively, but I know just how much I need to find before I retire.

Julian Frere was recommended to me and my wife by our previous financial adviser - and the introduction has already proved to be a great success. What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

I was left a substantial amount of money from my parents and my wife and I wished to invest the bulk wisely.

How has Julian Frere helped you?

He and his team discussed our situation, our requirements and our attitude for risk.They then carefully explained the way in which TPO works and their methods of investment. TPO went away to look in depth at our situation and then recommend the right investment path for us, based on the initial discussion. We accepted their recommendations and have moved forward to invest. At the same time we had similar discussions with other IFO's but came to the conclusion that we were reassured by the integrity and methods of working of TPO ; so chose to work with TPO.

It is too early to judge any outcome. We are working on a five year plan and will not expect benefits to arise until the plan has progressed much further.

I was concerned that I would pay too much Inheritance Tax on my estate and that I wasn't doing the best I could with my savings.

How has Julian Frere helped you?

Julian worked out what my Inheritance Tax bill actually was and how it would change in the future. He also helped me understand how much I needed to keep back for myself so I wouldn't be in a difficult position in the future. We then designed a strategy that I felt comfortable with, mostly giving money to my family in the best way. Investing money wasn't right for me but he did help find the best rates for my cash savings via his colleagues at Savings Champion. He introduced me to an excellent solicitor to complete the legal work.

I am retired and careful with money. Doing the right thing for me and my family is important. I feel settled that I understand my position, what the future holds and that my savings are working hard for me.

What could they have done better?

I had Investments with Lloyds Bank, and was not sure that I was doing the best for my family in remaining with them. I then responded to an Article in the Radio Times.
