Over the years I've worked for a number of employers and ended up with many different pension 'pots'. Now that I'm over 55 I felt that it was important to get advice from someone who could explain what I have, is it enough, do I have to take any action before I retire?

Chris was great. He took care to fully understand my current financial circumstances and then following a review of my pensions, insurance policies etc was able to make sensible suggestions with regards to next steps. He explained everything in clear 'laymans terms' and I'm very confident that I'm now in a better position than I was prior to our meetings.

I was looking for advice and options for a small pension pot that was currently in a fund provided by a larger corporation. It wasn’t performing as best as I had hoped and was looking for advise on options.

Chris and his team showed extreme patience and understanding and tailored their advice to a) my low risk profile and b) my low financial acumen. Advice was tailored to my knowledge level remaining jargon free as much as possible so I eventually felt confident to make a call on what I wanted to do.

Chris was very patient and spent time with me explaining their charges which are quite complex but now make sense. I may refer back to Chris in the future - when I need to review the finances that we discussed which will be in a couple so years. Very polite, to the point, and patient.

My old CIS pension was a joke and wasn’t making any money even though I’d been paying in for years, !

How has Chris Clark helped you?

He sorted out both my wife’s and my pension. He took my 2 non preforming CIS pensions put all the funds together into one decent company and watched my pension pot increase every year. Unlike the useless coop pension!

What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

To obtain proactive good advice about my ISA savings and my self invested personal pension having been disappointed with a previous independent financial adviser and the departure of my HSBC Bank Premier customer investment adviser.

How has Chris Clark helped you?

I find him pleasant, polite and patient in explaining his recommendations, which are thoroughly reviewed on a regular basis. Above all, he listens and gets results. He has been servicing us well for 8 or more years and long may our relationship continue.

Yes. In one instance I took up a suggestion of his to go with a flexible/ continual fund manager for a 6-month free trial and after discussion at the end of the trial period we decided to revert to the plan we had at this was done without a fuss or loss.

What could they have done better?

I cannot think of anything that could have been done better. To reduce the amount of printed reports coming through the letter box, I asked if I could be sent quarterly updates of the portfolios in an Excel spreadsheet by email so I have at my finger tips the whole history as regularly updated. This was no problem and it works for me.

What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

I had several old personal pensions which had been left without attention for many years and I had no idea of their historic performance or current performance, and did not have the knowledge or to evaluate these confidently. I needed to understand these and ensure ensure they were working to grow my pension pot. I also needed to evaluate my current SIPP, Investment ISA and insurance policies, decide where to place future investments (including pension contributions from by business) and start to build a plan toward my retirement in 10 years time.

How has Chris Clark helped you?

Chris provided detailed and clear analysis reports of my existing pensions and investments, their performance, current status, and recommendations on actions to take to achieve my goals. As a result I am moving forward to consolidate some of older personal pensions into a new pension to be monitored by Advance Wealth. Next I will be considering SIPP and ISA investments and insurance policies. Chris also has access to close acquaintances who will be able to offer specialist advice in areas of insurance, wills and inheritance, business development which may not fall directly under the expertise of an IFA but are complimentary and necessary. I have learned that an IFA will provide solid and structured advice with a large degree of safety and caution as would be expected. I also learned that I have an appetite for some more risky investments which I will pursue in addition to this advice. Chris understood this and had no issue with my pursuing multiple investment 'paths' and at no time did I feel under pressure to put all my eggs in one basket.

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

I was referred to Chris by my Accountant and went into the process with no prior experience with an IFA. I have been pleased with the advice and the clarity which Chris was able to bring to the table in a professional but friendly manner and I now have confidence that I am at the start of a much needed plan toward retirement. Knowing that there will be someone there to help guide my investment and provide stable advice along the way is exactly what I need.

What could they have done better?

I am at the early stages of our relationship and so far I am 100% satisfied with the service and advice I have received. I have provided 4* ratings only because I do not yet have experience of the ongoing review process, however once my investments have run for a period I expect to be able to provide a full 5* rating.
