At the time back in late 2019, I was looking at purchasing my first property but wanted to first have a 'sense check' meeting with a financial advisor to better understand my wider financial situation. The first meeting was very informative and highly valuable in my decision-making. I needed to arrange a mortgage and work out a plan for my investments which were sitting in an array of dormant pensions and underperforming ISAs. I was concerned about whether I really had enough capital to justify the costs of professional advice. I was also unsure about who to trust. Financial advisory services is a huge industry of which I know little about. My brother recommended Ablestoke. I first arranged my mortgage through the company. The service was good and that helped build the trust I needed to also discuss my investments.

How has Lawrence Bearman helped you?

Lawrence was patient and was very good at explaining relatively complex things in relatively simple terms without patronising me and in a way which helped me develop trust in him as a person and in the process. Lawrence has always been prompt at answering questions I've had after meetings and he's been able to do so with a good level of expertise. I took quite a lot of convincing and needed to go through things quite carefully due to my inherently risk averse nature. He persuaded me of the benefits of viewing risk in a more holistic manner and hopefully this will pay off in the longer term!

As well as my mortgage, we have developed a long-term investment strategy for my savings. Having sold a large number of shares, I wanted to invest the cash and get a better return than savings accounts or premium bonds. I needed help with sound investments and more options for investment after working with previous advisors that worked with companies with less attractive portfolio options. I have come across many advisors that behave purely like salespeople. No real interest in the person they are looking after. However, I know Lawrence personally and know he is a trustworthy and decent person.

I needed expertise when investing and for my investments to be far more active than the index funds I had been using. I also have a very limited understanding of financial planning and the huge benefits of starting this early. However I was concerned the cost of using a financial adviser wasn't worth the gains, which could be obtained by investing in fairly safe funds etc.

What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

I was interested in obtaining financial advice as I am relatively new to investing and I was unsure in my original investment choices. I wanted to ensure that my money was being directed into quality assets from an early stage in my career. My main concern involved the initial/ongoing fees and whether the service would justify these fees. I was also wary of obtaining generic advice that did not suit my current investment goals.

I choose to move forwards with Lawrence as I felt as though my investment goals and aspirations were reflected within the strategy presented to me. There was a clear message regarding a comprehensive financial plan which helps to create a solid financial future. I felt that the financial knowledge was incredibly strong and I felt comfortable and well-informed during initial conversations.

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

Lawrence helped me to transfer my old investment portfolio into a new set of assets which are more diverse and represent a sustainable, quality asset portfolio with strong growth potential. The portfolio was set up on a new platform for myself which offered lower costs under the advice of Ablestoke. Relevant tax-efficient accounts were created in order to take advantage of the benefits available to investors. Overall, this helped me to transition towards a much stronger investment portfolio. I felt well informed regarding the complete strategy behind a thorough financial plan. As a relatively young professional, it was insightful to learn about the financial risks that will become more relevant later in life and receiving advice on how to address these concerns in the short term. This approach showed me that Ablestoke and Lawrence value clients and the future relationship at a high level which removed any concerns that I had regarding initial fees.

Overall, the onboarding process with Lawrence was extremely informative. I was exposed to areas of my financial profile that I had not considered in the past, and I was able to gain quality advice on a well-rounded financial plan. I felt comfortable discussing my background and sharing relevant information and I look forward to an ongoing relationship in the future. I would recommend clients who lack investment knowledge and require guidance with regards to the best location for their funds in order to deliver growth for the future. I would also recommend aspirational, young professionals who are seeking a genuine, long-lasting relationship with a financial advisory service. What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

I had multiple pension pots from various companies I had worked at. They were not gaining in value. I needed to consolidate them and ensure the pension pot would continue to grow. We were investing in a new home and needed to make sure we had the right safety nets in place to be able to continue payments even if difficult situations came up. I wanted to better understand what my retirement would look like with my existing pension and what I would need to do to make sure I could continue to support myself financially when I retired. I was worried about not really understanding how my money would be invested or how it would be managed. It's hard to trust someone with your money.

I first contacted Ablestoke, through Lawrence Bearman, as I had previously attempted investing myself and wanted some professional support.
